    The Cadaver in the Machine: The Social Practices of Measurement and Validation in Motion Capture Technology

    Motion capture systems, used across various domains, make body representations concrete through technical processes. We argue that the measurement of bodies and the validation of measurements for motion capture systems can be understood as social practices. By analyzing the findings of a systematic literature review (N=278) through the lens of social practice theory, we show how these practices, and their varying attention to errors, become ingrained in motion capture design and innovation over time. Moreover, we show how contemporary motion capture systems perpetuate assumptions about human bodies and their movements. We suggest that social practices of measurement and validation are ubiquitous in the development of data- and sensor-driven systems more broadly, and provide this work as a basis for investigating hidden design assumptions and their potential negative consequences in human-computer interaction.Comment: 34 pages, 9 figures.     Assessment of ridden horse behavior

    Assessments of the behavior of ridden horses form the basis of performance evaluation. The purpose of any performance being evaluated will determine the factors considered important, those indicative of 'poor' performance and what makes a successful equine athlete. Currently there is no consistent objective means of assessing ridden horse behavior and inevitably, given the different equestrian disciplines, the likelihood of a universal standard of good and bad performance is remote. Nevertheless, in order to protect the welfare of the ridden horse regardless of its specific role, we should strive for consensus on an objective means of identifying behavioral signs indicative of mental state. Current technological developments enable objective evaluation of movement patterns, but many aspects of the assessment of ridden behavior still rely on subjective judgement. The development of a list of behaviors exhibited by ridden horses, a ridden horse ethogram, will facilitate recording of observable behavioral events. However, without objective evidence of the relevance of these behavioral events, such a resource has limited value

    Lower limb sagittal gait kinematics can be predicted based on walking speed, gender, age and BMI.

    Clinical gait analysis attempts to provide, in a pathological context, an objective record that quantifies the magnitude of deviations from normal gait. However, the identification of deviations is highly dependent with the characteristics of the normative database used. In particular, a mismatch between patient characteristics and an asymptomatic population database in terms of walking speed, demographic and anthropometric parameters may lead to misinterpretation during the clinical process. Rather than developing a new normative data repository that may require considerable of resources and time, this study aims to assess a method for predicting lower limb sagittal kinematics using multiple regression models based on walking speed, gender, age and BMI as predictors. With this approach, we were able to predict kinematics with an error within 1 standard deviation of the mean of the original waveforms recorded on fifty-four participants. Furthermore, the proposed approach allowed us to estimate the relative contribution to angular variations of each predictor, independently from the others. It appeared that a mismatch in walking speed, but also age, sex and BMI may lead to errors higher than 5° on lower limb sagittal kinematics and should thus be taken into account before any clinical interpretation

    Inertial sensor based full body 3D kinematics in the differential diagnosis between Parkinson’s Disease and mimics

    The differential diagnosis of Parkinson’s Disease (PD) remains challenging with frequent mis and underdiagnosis. DAT-Scan has been a useful technique for assessing the lost integrity of the nigrostriatal pathway in PD and differentiating true parkinsonism from mimics. However, DAT-Scan remains unavailable in most non-specialized clinical centres, making imperative the search for other easy and low-cost solutions. This dissertation aimed to investigate the role of inertial sensors in distinguishing between the denervated and the non-denervated individuals. In this dissertation, we've used Inertial Sensor Based 3D Full Body Kinematics (FBK) and tested if this technique was able to distinguish between patients with changes in the DAT-Scan from those without. This was divided into two parts, being that firstly, a group of individuals was referred by the attending physician for DAT-Scan (123I-FP-CIT SPECT) to be able to compare FBK in those with and without evidence of dopaminergic depletion. Second, it was tested whether FBK could be used as a metric for the severity of dopaminergic depletion. Twenty-one patients participated in this study, being recruited from the Nuclear Medicine Unit in the Champalimaud Clinical Centre (CCC), Lisbon. Within these 21 patients, 10 of them had denervation (mean age, 68.4 ± 7.8 years) and the remaining 11 (mean age, 66.6 ± 7.4 years) did not present denervation. The analysis between the worst uptake ratio features and dimensional features, as well as the asymmetry indexes in the striatum revealed significant differences between denervated and non-denervated individuals. On the contrary, the kinematics did not do it. Overall, based on the collected kinematics data, it was identified that there was not any significant correlation between the kinematics and the DAT-Scan. What means that these kinematics variables were not able to explain the DAT-Scan. On the other hand, it was also checked that the kinematics data were strongly correlated to the motor symptoms (MDS-UPDRS III). This way, it was concluded that the classical biomechanics did not distinguish denervated from non-denervated individuals. Therefore, the kinematics could not give the same answer as the DAT-Scan. In spite of these results it would be relevant to keep researching other methods in order to find out the distinction between the denervation and no denervation in a low-cost way

    Analysis and enhancement of interpersonal coordination using inertial measurement unit solutions

    Die heutigen mobilen Kommunikationstechnologien haben den Umfang der verbalen und textbasierten Kommunikation mit anderen Menschen, sozialen Robotern und kĂŒnstlicher Intelligenz erhöht. Auf der anderen Seite reduzieren diese Technologien die nonverbale und die direkte persönliche Kommunikation, was zu einer gesellschaftlichen Thematik geworden ist, weil die Verringerung der direkten persönlichen Interaktionen eine angemessene Wahrnehmung sozialer und umgebungsbedingter Reizmuster erschweren und die Entwicklung allgemeiner sozialer FĂ€higkeiten bremsen könnte. Wissenschaftler haben aktuell die Bedeutung nonverbaler zwischenmenschlicher AktivitĂ€ten als soziale FĂ€higkeiten untersucht, indem sie menschliche Verhaltensmuster in Zusammenhang mit den jeweilgen neurophysiologischen Aktivierungsmustern analzsiert haben. Solche QuerschnittsansĂ€tze werden auch im Forschungsprojekt der EuropĂ€ischen Union "Socializing sensori-motor contingencies" (socSMCs) verfolgt, das darauf abzielt, die LeistungsfĂ€higkeit sozialer Roboter zu verbessern und Autismus-Spektrumsstörungen (ASD) adĂ€quat zu behandeln. In diesem Zusammenhang ist die Modellierung und das Benchmarking des Sozialverhaltens gesunder Menschen eine Grundlage fĂŒr theorieorientierte und experimentelle Studien zum weiterfĂŒhrenden VerstĂ€ndnis und zur UnterstĂŒtzung interpersoneller Koordination. In diesem Zusammenhang wurden zwei verschiedene empirische Kategorien in AbhĂ€ngigkeit von der Entfernung der Interagierenden zueinander vorgeschlagen: distale vs. proximale Interaktionssettings, da sich die Struktur der beteiligten kognitiven Systeme zwischen den Kategorien Ă€ndert und sich die Ebene der erwachsenden socSMCs verschiebt. Da diese Dissertation im Rahmen des socSMCs-Projekts entstanden ist, wurden Interaktionssettings fĂŒr beide Kategorien (distal und proximal) entwickelt. Zudem wurden Ein-Sensor-Lösungen zur Reduzierung des Messaufwands (und auch der Kosten) entwickelt, um eine Messung ausgesuchter Verhaltensparameter bei einer Vielzahl von Menschen und sozialen Interaktionen zu ermöglichen. ZunĂ€chst wurden Algorithmen fĂŒr eine kopfgetragene TrĂ€gheitsmesseinheit (H-IMU) zur Messung der menschlichen Kinematik als eine Ein-Sensor-Lösung entwickelt. Die Ergebnisse bestĂ€tigten, dass die H-IMU die eigenen Gangparameter unabhĂ€ngig voneinander allein auf Basis der Kopfkinematik messen kann. Zweitens wurden—als ein distales socSMC-Setting—die interpersonellen Kopplungen mit einem Bezug auf drei interagierende Merkmale von „Übereinstimmung“ (engl.: rapport) behandelt: PositivitĂ€t, gegenseitige Aufmerksamkeit und Koordination. Die H-IMUs ĂŒberwachten bestimmte soziale Verhaltensereignisse, die sich auf die Kinematik der Kopforientierung und Oszillation wĂ€hrend des Gehens und Sprechens stĂŒtzen, so dass der Grad der Übereinstimmung geschĂ€tzt werden konnte. Schließlich belegten die Ergebnisse einer experimentellen Studie, die zu einer kollaborativen Aufgabe mit der entwickelten IMU-basierten Tablet-Anwendung durchgefĂŒhrt wurde, unterschiedliche Wirkungen verschiedener audio-motorischer Feedbackformen fĂŒr eine UnterstĂŒtzung der interpersonellen Koordination in der Kategorie proximaler sensomotorischer Kontingenzen. Diese Dissertation hat einen intensiven interdisziplinĂ€ren Charakter: Technologische Anforderungen in den Bereichen der Sensortechnologie und der Softwareentwicklung mussten in direktem Bezug auf vordefinierte verhaltenswissenschaftliche Fragestellungen entwickelt und angewendet bzw. gelöst werden—und dies in zwei unterschiedlichen DomĂ€nen (distal, proximal). Der gegebene Bezugsrahmen wurde als eine große Herausforderung bei der Entwicklung der beschriebenen Methoden und Settings wahrgenommen. Die vorgeschlagenen IMU-basierten Lösungen könnten dank der weit verbreiteten IMU-basierten mobilen GerĂ€te zukĂŒnftig in verschiedene Anwendungen perspektiv reich integriert werden.Today’s mobile communication technologies have increased verbal and text-based communication with other humans, social robots and intelligent virtual assistants. On the other hand, the technologies reduce face-to-face communication. This social issue is critical because decreasing direct interactions may cause difficulty in reading social and environmental cues, thereby impeding the development of overall social skills. Recently, scientists have studied the importance of nonverbal interpersonal activities to social skills, by measuring human behavioral and neurophysiological patterns. These interdisciplinary approaches are in line with the European Union research project, “Socializing sensorimotor contingencies” (socSMCs), which aims to improve the capability of social robots and properly deal with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Therefore, modelling and benchmarking healthy humans’ social behavior are fundamental to establish a foundation for research on emergence and enhancement of interpersonal coordination. In this research project, two different experimental settings were categorized depending on interactants’ distance: distal and proximal settings, where the structure of engaged cognitive systems changes, and the level of socSMCs differs. As a part of the project, this dissertation work referred to this spatial framework. Additionally, single-sensor solutions were developed to reduce costs and efforts in measuring human behaviors, recognizing the social behaviors, and enhancing interpersonal coordination. First of all, algorithms using a head worn inertial measurement unit (H-IMU) were developed to measure human kinematics, as a baseline for social behaviors. The results confirmed that the H-IMU can measure individual gait parameters by analyzing only head kinematics. Secondly, as a distal sensorimotor contingency, interpersonal relationship was considered with respect to a dynamic structure of three interacting components: positivity, mutual attentiveness, and coordination. The H-IMUs monitored the social behavioral events relying on kinematics of the head orientation and oscillation during walk and talk, which can contribute to estimate the level of rapport. Finally, in a new collaborative task with the proposed IMU-based tablet application, results verified effects of different auditory-motor feedbacks on the enhancement of interpersonal coordination in a proximal setting. This dissertation has an intensive interdisciplinary character: Technological development, in the areas of sensor and software engineering, was required to apply to or solve issues in direct relation to predefined behavioral scientific questions in two different settings (distal and proximal). The given frame served as a reference in the development of the methods and settings in this dissertation.     A biomechanical approach to prevent falls in ergonomic settings

    Introduction: Fall-related injuries are exceptionally prevalent in occupational settings. While endangering the workers’ health, falls cause poor productivity and increased economic burden in the workplace. Hence, identifying these threats and training workers to achieve proper postural control is crucial. Purpose: Study 1: To investigate the ankle joint kinematics in unexpected and expected trip responses during single-tasking (ST), dual-tasking (DT), and triple-tasking (TT), before and after a physically fatiguing exercise. Study 2: To investigate the impact of virtual heights, DT, and training on static postural stability and cognitive processing. Methods: Study 1: Twenty collegiate volunteers (10 males and females, one left leg dominant, age 20.35 plus-minus 1.04 years, height 174.83 plus-minus 9.03 cm, mass 73.88 plus-minus 15.55 kg) were recruited. Ankle joint kinematics were recorded while treadmill walking during normal gait (NG), unexpected trip (UT), and expected trip (ET) perturbations with DT and physical fatigue. Study 2: Twenty-eight collegiate volunteers (14 males and females; all right leg dominant; age 20.48 plus-minus 1.26 years; height 172.67 plus-minus 6.66 cm; mass 69.52 plus-minus 13.78 kg; body mass index 23.32 plus-minus 3.54 kg/m2) were recruited. They were exposed to different virtual environments (VEs) over three days with and without DT. Postural sway parameters, lower extremity muscle activity, heart rate, and subjective anxiety parameters were collected. Results: Study 1: Greater maximum ankle angles were observed during UT compared to NG, MDT compared to ST, and TT compared to ST, while greater minimum ankle angles were observed during ET compared to NG and during post-fatigue compared to pre-fatigue. Study 2: Greater postural decrements and poor cognitive processing were observed in high altitudes and DT. Discussion & conclusions: Study 1: Trip recovery responses are different between during DT, TT, and fatigue. Study 2: Static postural stability deteriorates at higher virtual altitudes and with DT, while it improves with a two-day training. Virtual height exposure reduces cognitive performance. Importance: The findings of these studies will provide insights into the biomechanics of falls in ergonomic settings and aid in designing functional and convenient fall prevention programs
