The floristic-phytosodological and ecological differentiation of agrophytocoenoses of the Bełchatów Mining Energetic District were presented. The expected directions of changes of field phytocoenoses, of this region wire pointed out and factors responsible for this process were determined. It was assumed that these processes are going to cause impoverishment of segetal plants and contribute to origination of simpler systems, less stable and less resistant to anthropopression.Zadanie pt. Background: Stomach mucosal wall erosion is caused by the imbalance of the aggressive factors and mucosal defensive factors due to the common causes such as the side effect of consuming non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Field mint (Menthaarvensis) leaves have been used as an alternative option to cure and prevent the gastric problems. The aim of this study was to analyze the protective effect of Field mint leaves infusion in reducing stomach ulcer in rats induced by Aspirin. Methods: The experimental study was conducted at Histology Laboratory of Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Padjadjaran, Bandung. Sixteen rats were divided into 4 groups randomly: group I (control negative group), group II (control positive group, given 90mg/day Aspirin, group III (the treatment group, given 5cc of Field mint leaves infusion and 90 mg Aspirin) and group IV (the treatment group, given 5.6µg of Misoprostol and 90 mg Aspirin). Mucosal wall erosions were determined by using microscope. Data were analyzed using non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney U-test (CI 95% and p-value<0.05)Results: Group II had high score of mucosal wall erosions after given only aspirin. In group III and IV, the score of mucosal wall erosions were low. However there was no difference in score of mucosal wall erosions between group III-IV (p<0.05)Conclusions: Field mint (Menthaarvensis) leaves infusion is able to prevent stomach mucosal wall erosions induced by Aspirin as misoprostol does. DOI: 10.15850/amj.v2n3.49

Functional Food Product Development and Quality Analysis of Whey Based Fruit Herbal Beverage

Get PDF
This study focuses on development of herbal fruit beverage based on whey. Whey was mixed with pineapple juices along with mentha flavor in the ratio 8:2:1. This study evaluated the physicochemical, sensory and microbial analysis of the developed product periodically till a period of 20 days. The analyzed physico-chemical parameters in the product reported a decline from 0.02 to 2% as the storage period increased. 0.18% of fat reduced to 0.16% during the study period. Protein content reduced up to 0.13%. Lactose content was reduced to 0.2% at the end of 20 days. Sensory evaluation had a high reading of 8.32 for taste and a least value of 6.64. The hedonic scale reading drastically decreased after ten days of storage. Whey based pineapple beverage can serve as a best alternative functional food in the present-day scenario

An approach for prioritizing “down-the-drain” chemicals used in the household

Get PDF
This article has been made available through the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund. Many chemicals are present in cleaning and personal care products, which after use are washed down the drain and find their way into water bodies, where they may impact the environment. This study surveyed individuals to determine what products were used most in the home, in an attempt to prioritize which compounds may be of most concern. The survey resulted in the identification of 14 categories of products consisting of 315 specific brands. The survey estimated that individuals each discharge almost 33 L of products per year down the drain. Dishwashing liquids and hand wash gels, which accounted for 40% of this volume, were selected for identification of specific ingredients. Ingredients were classified as surfactants, preservatives, fragrances or miscellaneous, with hand wash gels having a wider range of ingredients than dishwashing liquids. A review of the literature suggested that preservatives, which are designed to be toxic, and fragrances, where data on toxicity are limited, should be prioritized. The approach undertaken has successfully estimated use and provisionally identified some classes of chemicals which may be of most concern when used in cleaning and personal care products

Food rainbow to boost immunity in different age groups –review on nature’s perspective

Food is a blessing in simple terms it not only nourishes and gives vitality but also provide reservoir to keep the body functioning in pace. Food act as a diet and medicine depends on how one uses it sensibly and accurately. The food rainbow is rich in variety with respect to appearance, taste, chemical composition, nutritional value and medicinal properties. As immunity is the integral part of body and it can be well maintained if one is having a good portion utilized daily from the food rainbow. In natural medicine the kitchen spices has played a pivotal role in health and making food palatable. Natural sources like vegetables, fruits, meat, nuts, dairy, grains and etc., are enriched with this blessing to heal and boost immunity. Every cell functions when it has the proper nutrition and every single body is different from other then comes the age and gender differentiation. This difference of age and gender demands variety of meals incorporated in daily diet thus food rainbow utilization is the key to maintain proper functioning of body cells and also boosting immunity. Energy packed food rainbow has not only the physiological benefits it vitalizes the emotional and psychological health as well. Co-ordination in all processes is achieved while mantaininghealthy life style and nutrition. As we all are well aware about the significance of maintaining a proper diet regimen to obtain sound health and active lifestyle. This article will elaborate about the food rainbow which must be included in daily routine in different age groups and genders. The daily recommendation for certain nutrients is different with growing age and also at the time of advancement in age. From research perspective the recommendations can be followed and results can be recorded for further enhancement on immunity booster food. This could be done at level of educational institute with students and teachers to extend the analysis and educate people from early age to understand and alter their diet according to their age and gender and get most out of it.

I Smell Trouble: Using Multiple Scents To Convey Driving-Relevant Information

Get PDF
Cars provide drivers with task-related information (e.g. "Fill gas") mainly using visual and auditory stimuli. However, those stimuli may distract or overwhelm the driver, causing unnecessary stress. Here, we propose olfactory stimulation as a novel feedback modality to support the perception of visual notifications, reducing the visual demand of the driver. Based on previous research, we explore the application of the scents of lavender, peppermint, and lemon to convey three driving-relevant messages (i.e. "Slow down", "Short inter-vehicle distance", "Lane departure"). Our paper is the first to demonstrate the application of olfactory conditioning in the context of driving and to explore how multiple olfactory notifications change the driving behaviour. Our findings demonstrate that olfactory notifications are perceived as less distracting, more comfortable, and more helpful than visual notifications. Drivers also make less driving mistakes when exposed to olfactory notifications. We discuss how these findings inform the design of future in-car user interfaces

Biosorption of Zn (II) Metal Ion by Ca-Alginate Immobilized Durian (Durio Zibethinus) Seed

Heavy metal biosorption by alginate immobilized durian seed has been done. The immobilization of durian seed powder to Ca-alginate was able to improve biomass adsorption process, increase uptake capacity, ease separation from solution, generate and repeat biosorbent. In this experiment the effect of pH, contact time, concentration and temperature on the uptake capacity of metal ions Zn(II) in solution were studied. Biosorption was done batch methods and result was studied Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm. The adsorption of heavy metal was optimum in pH 5 with 75 mins contact time and Zn(II) ion under the concentration of 250-300 mg/l. The adsorption isotherm data was characterized using Langmuir and Freundlich equation. The equilibrium biosorption isotherm showed that alginate immobilized durian seed process has high affinities with adsorption capacities of 25.05 mg/g. All results showed that alginate immobilized durian seed is an alternative low cost biosorbent for heavy metal ion removal from aqueous solutio
