    Cutting Forces Assessment in CNC Machining Processes: A Critical Review

    Machining processes remain an unavoidable technique in the production of high-precision parts. Tool behavior is of the utmost importance in machining productivity and costs. Tool performance can be assessed by the roughness left on the machined surfaces, as well as of the forces developed during the process. There are various techniques to determine these cutting forces, such as cutting force prediction or measurement, using dynamometers and other sensor systems. This technique has often been used by numerous researchers in this area.     DEVELOPMENT OF NUMERICAL MODELS FOR THE PREDICTION OF TEMPERATURE AND SURFACE ROUGHNESS DURING THE MACHINING OPERATION OF TITANIUM ALLOY (Ti6Al4V)

    Temperature and surface roughness are important factors, which determine the degree of machinability and the performance of both the cutting tool and the work piece material. In this study, numerical models obtained from the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) techniques were used for predicting the magnitude of the temperature and surface roughness during the machining operation of titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V). The design of the numerical experiment was carried out using the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) for the combination of the process parameters while the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) with 3 input layers, 10 sigmoid hidden neurons and 3 linear output neurons were employed for the prediction of the values of temperature. The ANN was iteratively trained using the Levenberg-Marquardt backpropagation algorithm. The physical experiments were carried out using a DMU80monoBLOCK Deckel Maho 5-axis CNC milling machine with a maximum spindle speed of 18 000 rpm. A carbide-cutting insert (RCKT1204MO-PM S40T) was used for the machining operation. A professional infrared video thermometer with an LCD display and camera function (MT 696) with infrared temperature range of −50−1000 °C, was employed for the temperature measurement while the surface roughness of the work pieces were measured using the Mitutoyo SJ – 201, surface roughness machine. The results obtained indicate that there is high degree of agreement between the values of temperature and surface roughness measured from the physical experiments and the predicted values obtained using the ANN and RSM. This signifies that the developed RSM and ANN models are highly suitable for predictive purposes. This work can find application in the production and manufacturing industries especially for the control, optimization and process monitoring of process parameters

    A versatilidade e rigor da maquinagem, fazem deste um dos processos de fabrico mais utilizados na indústria metalomecânica. Com a expansão da utilização de aços inoxidáveis duplex, a maquinagem destes é cada vez mais frequente, contudo, este processo não é fácil. O corte destas ligas é caraterizado por vários mecanismos de desgaste na ferramenta, que trazem impacto negativo na qualidade do trabalho produzido. Ao longo dos anos, tem-se assistido a uma otimização deste processo, assim como ao desenvolvimento de novas ferramentas com revestimentos que melhoram a tribologia do corte e métodos de controlo do desgaste que visam a otimização dos parâmetros. O presente trabalho visa avaliar o comportamento de ferramentas com variação de parâmetros de corte na fresagem deste tipo de ligas. Para tal, foram utilizadas ferramentas de geometria e composição semelhantes, produzidas por empresas distintas. A análise comparativa recaiu sobre a qualidade da superfície gerada por maquinagem, através de perfilometria, registo do desgaste por microscopia eletrónica e análise das forças e binário de corte durante a maquinagem. As experiências realizadas mostram que os parâmetros de corte indicados pelos fabricantes são muito eficazes no equilíbrio entre desgaste, forças de corte e rugosidade. A velocidade de avanço pode ser reduzida, de modo a melhorar a rugosidade, ou aumentada, de modo a otimizar tempos de maquinagem.The versatility and quality of the machining make this one of the most used manufacturing processes in the metalworking industry. With the expansion in the use of duplex stainless steels, its machining is more and more frequent, however, this process is not easy. The cutting of these alloys is characterized by several tool wear mechanisms whose have a negative impact on the quality of the work produced. Over the years, there has been an optimization of this process, development of new tools, with coatings that improve the cutting tribological features, and wear control methods that look to optimize the parameters. The present work aims to evaluate the behavior of tools with variation in cutting parameters when milling this type of alloys. For this purpose, tools produced by different companies, with similar geometry and composition were used and analysed. Comparative analysis focused on the quality of the surface generated by machining has been made through profilometry, evaluation of the wear by scanning electron microscopy and analysis of cutting forces and torque during machining. The performed work has shown that the cutting data indicated by tool manufacturers are very effective in balancing wear, cutting forces and roughness.     For many years, tire engineers relied on the monograph, \u27Mechanics of Pneumatic Tires\u27, for detailed information about the principles of tire design and use. Published originally by the National Bureau of Standards, U.S. Department of Commerce, in 1971, and a later (1981) edition by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), U.S. Department of Transportation, it has long been out of print. No textbook or monograph of comparable range and depth has appeared since. While many chapters of the two editions contain authoritative reviews that are still relevant today, they were prepared in an era when bias ply and belted-bias tires were in widespread use in the United States and thus did not deal in a comprehensive way with more recent tire technology, notably the radial constructions now adopted nearly universally. In 2002, it was preposed that NHTSA should sponsor and publish electronically a new book on passenger tires, under editorship of the University of Akron, to meet the needs of a new generation of tire scientists, engineers, designers, and users. This text is the outcome. The chapter authors are recognized authorities in tire science and technology. They have prepared scholarly and up-to-date reviews of the various aspects of passenger car tire design, construction and use, and included test questions in many instances, so that the book can be used for self-study or as a teaching text by engineers and others entering the tire industry

    Epidemiology of Injury in English Women's Super league Football: A Cohort Study

    INTRODUCTION: The epidemiology of injury in male professional football has been well documented (Ekstrand, Hägglund, & Waldén, 2011) and used as a basis to understand injury trends for a number of years. The prevalence and incidence of injuries occurring in womens super league football is unknown. The aim of this study is to estimate the prevalence and incidence of injury in an English Super League Women’s Football squad. METHODS: Following ethical approval from Leeds Beckett University, players (n = 25) signed to a Women’s Super League Football club provided written informed consent to complete a self-administered injury survey. Measures of exposure, injury and performance over a 12-month period was gathered. Participants were classified as injured if they reported a football injury that required medical attention or withdrawal from participation for one day or more. Injuries were categorised as either traumatic or overuse and whether the injury was a new injury and/or re-injury of the same anatomical site RESULTS: 43 injuries, including re-injury were reported by the 25 participants providing a clinical incidence of 1.72 injuries per player. Total incidence of injury was 10.8/1000 h (95% CI: 7.5 to 14.03). Participants were at higher risk of injury during a match compared with training (32.4 (95% CI: 15.6 to 48.4) vs 8.0 (95% CI: 5.0 to 10.85)/1000 hours, p 28 days) of which there were three non-contact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. The epidemiological incidence proportion was 0.80 (95% CI: 0.64 to 0.95) and the average probability that any player on this team will sustain at least one injury was 80.0% (95% CI: 64.3% to 95.6%) CONCLUSION: This is the first report capturing exposure and injury incidence by anatomical site from a cohort of English players and is comparable to that found in Europe (6.3/1000 h (95% CI 5.4 to 7.36) Larruskain et al 2017).
