    Development of a Wireless Power Transfer System using Resonant Inductive Coupling

    Access to power is a fundamental requirement for the effective functioning of any electrical/electronic circuit. The conduit of transfer of power can be either physical (wires, cables etc.) of non-physical (i.e. wireless). Wireless power transfer is a broad term used to describe any means used to transmit power to electricity dependent systems and devices. In this paper, a wireless power transfer system is developed to provide an alternative to using power cords for electrical/electronic devices. With this technology, challenges like damaged or tangled power cords, sparking hazards and the extensive use of plastic and copper used in cord production are resolved and also the need for batteries in non-mobile devices is eliminated. In this system, electromagnetic energy is transmitted from a power source (transmitter) to an electrical load (receiver) via resonant inductive coupling. The performance achieved is a good indication that power can still be transmitted over a medium range. In addition, possible ways of improving the efficiency of the system are discussed

    Design of Power Receiving Units for 6.78MHz Wireless Power Transfer Systems

    In the last decade, the wireless power transfer (WPT) technology has been a popular topic in power electronics research and increasingly adopted by consumers. The AirFuel WPT standard utilizes resonant coils to transfer energy at 6.78 MHz, introducing many benefits such as longer charging distance, multi-device charging, and high tolerance of the coil misalignment. However, variations in coil coupling due to the change in receiving coil positions alter the equivalent load reactance, degrading efficiency. In recent studies, active full-bridge rectifiers are employed on WPT receivers because of their superior efficiency, controllability, and ability to compensate for detuned WPT networks. In order to take advantage of those characteristics, the rectifier switching actions must be synchronized with the magnetic field. In the literature, existing solutions for synchronizing the active rectifier in WPT systems are mostly not reliable and bulky, which is not suitable for small receivers. Therefore, a frequency synchronous rectifier with compact on-board control is proposed in this thesis. The rectifier power stage is designed to deliver 40 W to the load while achieving full zero-voltage switching to minimize the loss. The inherent feedback from the power stage dynamics to the sensed signal is analyzed to design stable and robust synchronization control, even at a low power of 0.02 W. The control system is accomplished using commercial components, including a low-cost microcontroller, which eliminates the need for bulky control and external sensing hardware. This high power density design allows the receiver to be integrated into daily consumer electronics such as laptops and monitors. Finally, a wide-range and high v resolution control scheme of the rectifier input phase is proposed to enable the dynamic impedance matching capability, maintaining high system efficiency over wide loading conditions. In addition, to increase the WPT technology adoption to low-power consumer electronics, a small wireless receiver replacing conventional AA batteries is developed. This receiver can supply power to existing AA battery-powered devices while providing the benefit of WPT technologies to consumers

    A Wireless Charging System Applying Phase-Shift and Amplitude Control to Maximize Efficiency and Extractable Power

    Wireless power transfer (WPT) is an emerging technology with an increasing number of potential applications to transfer power from a transmitter to a mobile receiver over a relatively large air gap. However, its widespread application is hampered due to the relatively low efficiency of current Wireless power transfer (WPT) systems. This study presents a concept to maximize the efficiency as well as to increase the amount of extractable power of a WPT system operating in nonresonant operation. The proposed method is based on actively modifying the equivalent secondary-side load impedance by controlling the phase-shift of the active rectifier and its output voltage level. The presented hardware prototype represents a complete wireless charging system, including a dc-dc converter which is used to charge a battery at the output of the system. Experimental results are shown for the proposed concept in comparison to a conventional synchronous rectification approach. The presented optimization method clearly outperforms state-of-the-art solutions in terms of efficiency and extractable power

    Wireless power transmission: R&D activities within Europe

    Wireless power transmission (WPT) is an emerging technology that is gaining increased visibility in recent years. Efficient WPT circuits, systems and strategies can address a large group of applications spanning from batteryless systems, battery-free sensors, passive RF identification, near-field communications, and many others. WPT is a fundamental enabling technology of the Internet of Things concept, as well as machine-to-machine communications, since it minimizes the use of batteries and eliminates wired power connections. WPT technology brings together RF and dc circuit and system designers with different backgrounds on circuit design, novel materials and applications, and regulatory issues, forming a cross disciplinary team in order to achieve an efficient transmission of power over the air interface. This paper aims to present WPT technology in an integrated way, addressing state-of-the-art and challenges, and to discuss future R&D perspectives summarizing recent activities in Europe.The work of N.     Numerical analysis of wireless power transfer in near-field UHF-RFID systems

    A preliminary numerical analysis of the power transfer efficiency (PTE) for the forward link of near-field (NF) ultra high frequency (UHF)-radio frequency identification (RFID) systems is addressed in this paper, by resorting to an impedance matrix approach where the matrix entries are determined through full-wave simulations. The paper is aimed to quantify the NF-coupling effects on the PTE, as a function of the distance between the reader and tag antennas. To allow for a PTE comparison between different reader and tag antenna pairs, a benchmarking tag-loading condition has been assumed, where the tag antenna is loaded with the impedance that maximizes the PTE. In a more realistic loading condition, the load impedance is assumed as equal to the conjugate of the tag antenna input impedance. Full-wave simulations use accurate antenna models of commercial UHF-RFID passive tags and reader antennas. Finally, a “shape-matched antenna” configuration has been selected, where the reader antenna is assumed as identical to the tag antenna. It is shown that the above configuration could be a valuable compact solution, at least for those systems where the relative orientation/position between the tag and reader antennas can be controlled, and their separation is of the order of a few centimeters or less

    Inductive wireless power transmission for automotive applications

    Technology has revolutionised all aspects of human life at all consecutive intervals and Fourth Industrial Revolution is no different. Daily transport and energy industries not only shape the future of a country’s economy, but also make the economy highly yielding due to recent advances. Electric vehicles (EV) have been rapidly invading the market share during recent years. The advancements in EV and enhanced market share demand EV charging, being more reliant on either conventional plug-in charging or wireless charging. Given the limitations within battery related apparatus such as escalating battery costs, higher weight and lower power density, wireless power transfer (WPT) is a novel state of the art technology in energising. WPT has remarkable characteristics such as enhanced flexibility, mobility, convenience and safety, indicating potential benefits, if it is adopted for EV with similar efficiency; for example, it can eliminate the use of charging cables. Despite the fact that the wireless charges for EV, have undergone significant development phase during the last decade, many design limitations are yet to be addressed. Although the technology has been commercially outgrown, key limitations such as limited efficiency over distance, limited driving range, vulnerability to misalignments, or positional offsets are yet to be researched. Moreover, although high system efficiency can be attained, the distance variations between the transmitter and receiver and the misalignments will impact the system efficiency. This thesis addresses the aforementioned limitations and design challenges of the magnetic resonance WPT system, and proposes a novel transmitter and receiver circuit and coil designs, to minimise the impact of distance variations and coil misplacement, reduce the size and improve charging performance. This thesis focusses on inductive wireless power transfer (IWPT) which is also referred to as magnetic resonance and reviews and contrasts other WPT mechanisms. Additionally, it presents a detailed mathematical analysis of inductive wireless power circuit model to obtain accurate modelling parameters. Two and four loop strongly coupled magnetic resonance (SCMR) wireless power systems have been mathematically analysed and their performance has been evaluated. A novel combined, conformal strongly coupled magnetic resonance system (CSCMR) has been combined with SCMR, in order to minimise the dimensions of the receiver and compensate the coupling factor due to distance variations between the transmitter and receiver. In the second phase, additional inductors were added to the existing loosely coupled system to obtain higher efficiencies over higher distances. The size of the system has significantly reduced due to the additional smaller transmitter and receiver inductor which were added to the existing system to achieve better performance. The validity of each design has been discussed via a set of simulations, and their measurements have been obtained via prototypes. Finally, a smart WPT charging system, consisting of six transmitter loops and a sensor network array, for an autonomous parking space was developed. The proposed method reduces the energy required for determining a car’s location, eventually increasing the performance of the charger

    Recent Advancements in Defected Ground Structure Based Near-Field Wireless Power Transfer Systems

    The defected ground structure (DGS) technique enables miniaturization of the resonator which leads to the development of the compact near-field wireless power transfer (WPT) systems. In general, numerous challenges are inherent in the design of the DGS-based WPT systems and, hence, appropriate trade-offs for achieving optimal performance are required. Furthermore, the design advancements have led to the development of the DGS-based multi-band WPT systems to fulfill the needs of simultaneous data and power transfer. The innovations in the DGS-based WPT systems have also resulted in the definition of more commonly used figures-of-merit for the benchmarking of various performance metrics. The literature is replete with the design schemes to address one or more associated design challenges and successful WPT system realizations with enhanced performance. With this in mind, this paper touches upon the DGS-based WPTs developments and presents a concise report on the current state-of-the-art and future directions.Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, to be published in IEEE Acces

    Modeling and Control of a 7-Level Switched Capacitor Rectifier for Wireless Power Transfer Systems

    Wireless power continues to increase in popularity for consumer device charging. Rectifier characteristics like efficiency, compactness, impedance tunability, and harmonic content make the multi-level switched capacitor rectifier (MSC) an exceptional candidate for modern WPT systems. The MSC shares the voltage conversion characteristics of a post-rectification buck-boost topology, reduces waveform distortion via its multi-level modulation scheme, demonstrates tank tunability via the phase control inherent to actively switched rectifiers, and accomplishes all this without a bulky filter inductor. In this work, the MSC WPT system operation is explained, and a loss model is constructed. A prototype system is used to validate the models, showing exceptional agreement with the predicted efficiencies. The modeled MSC efficiencies are between 96.1% and 98.0% over the experimental power range up to 20.0 W. Two significant control loops are required for the MSC to be implemented in a real system. First, the output power is regulated using the modulation of the rectifier\u27s input voltage. Second, the switching frequency of the rectifier must exactly match the WPT carrier frequency set by the inverter on the primary side. Here, a small signal discrete time model is used to construct four transfer functions relating to the output voltage. Then, four novel time-to-time transfer functions are built on top of the discrete time model to inform the frequency synchronization feedback loop. Both loops are tested and validated in isolation. Finally, the dual-loop control problem is defined, closed form equations that include loop interactions are derived, and stable wide-range dual-loop operation is demonstrated experimentally

    1-D broadside-radiating leaky-wave antenna based on a numerically synthesized impedance surface

    A newly-developed deterministic numerical technique for the automated design of metasurface antennas is applied here for the first time to the design of a 1-D printed Leaky-Wave Antenna (LWA) for broadside radiation. The surface impedance synthesis process does not require any a priori knowledge on the impedance pattern, and starts from a mask constraint on the desired far-field and practical bounds on the unit cell impedance values. The designed reactance surface for broadside radiation exhibits a non conventional patterning; this highlights the merit of using an automated design process for a design well known to be challenging for analytical methods. The antenna is physically implemented with an array of metal strips with varying gap widths and simulation results show very good agreement with the predicted performance
