    This deliverable deals with the modelling and analysis of interdependencies between critical infrastructures, focussing attention on two interdependent infrastructures studied in the context of CRUTIAL: the electric power infrastructure and the information infrastructures supporting management, control and maintenance functionality. The main objectives are: 1) investigate the main challenges to be addressed for the analysis and modelling of interdependencies, 2) review the modelling methodologies and tools that can be used to address these challenges and support the evaluation of the impact of interdependencies on the dependability and resilience of the service delivered to the users, and 3) present the preliminary directions investigated so far by the CRUTIAL consortium for describing and modelling interdependencies

    Towards auto-scaling in the cloud: online resource allocation techniques

    Cloud computing provides an easy access to computing resources. Customers can acquire and release resources any time. However, it is not trivial to determine when and how many resources to allocate. Many applications running in the cloud face workload changes that affect their resource demand. The first thought is to plan capacity either for the average load or for the peak load. In the first case there is less cost incurred, but performance will be affected if the peak load occurs. The second case leads to money wastage, since resources will remain underutilized most of the time. Therefore there is a need for a more sophisticated resource provisioning techniques that can automatically scale the application resources according to workload demand and performance constrains. Large cloud providers such as Amazon, Microsoft, RightScale provide auto-scaling services. However, without the proper configuration and testing such services can do more harm than good. In this work I investigate application specific online resource allocation techniques that allow to dynamically adapt to incoming workload, minimize the cost of virtual resources and meet user-specified performance objectives

    La integración de las tecnologías de las telecomunicaciones en el sector del automóvil permitirá a los vehículos intercambiar información mediante Redes Vehiculares, ofreciendo numerosas posibilidades. Esta tesis se centra en la mejora de la seguridad vial y la reducción de la siniestralidad mediante Sistemas Inteligentes de Transporte (ITS). El primer paso consiste en obtener una difusión eficiente de los mensajes de advertencia sobre situaciones potencialmente peligrosas. Hemos desarrollado un marco para simular el intercambio de mensajes entre vehículos, utilizado para proponer esquemas eficientes de difusión. También demostramos que la disposición de las calles tiene gran influencia sobre la eficiencia del proceso. Nuestros algoritmos de difusión son parte de una arquitectura más amplia (e-NOTIFY) capaz de detectar accidentes de tráfico e informar a los servicios de emergencia. El desarrollo y evaluación de un prototipo demostró la viabilidad del sistema y cómo podría ayudar a reducir el número de víctimas en carretera

    Multipath routing and QoS provisioning in mobile ad hoc networks

    PhDA Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANET) is a collection of mobile nodes that can communicate with each other using multihop wireless links without utilizing any fixed based-station infrastructure and centralized management. Each mobile node in the network acts as both a host generating flows or being destination of flows and a router forwarding flows directed to other nodes. Future applications of MANETs are expected to be based on all-IP architecture and be capable of carrying multitude real-time multimedia applications such as voice and video as well as data. It is very necessary for MANETs to have an efficient routing and quality of service (QoS) mechanism to support diverse applications. This thesis proposes an on-demand Node-Disjoint Multipath Routing protocol (NDMR) with low broadcast redundancy. Multipath routing allows the establishment of multiple paths between a single source and single destination node. It is also beneficial to avoid traffic congestion and frequent link breaks in communication because of the mobility of nodes. The important components of the protocol, such as path accumulation, decreasing routing overhead and selecting node-disjoint paths, are explained. Because the new protocol significantly reduces the total number of Route Request packets, this results in an increased delivery ratio, smaller end-to-end delays for data packets, lower control overhead and fewer collisions of packets. Although NDMR provides node-disjoint multipath routing with low route overhead in MANETs, it is only a best-effort routing approach, which is not enough to support QoS. DiffServ is a standard approach for a more scalable way to achieve QoS in any IP network and could potentially be used to provide QoS in MANETs because it minimises the need for signalling. However, one of the biggest drawbacks of DiffServ is that the QoS provisioning is separate from the routing process. This thesis presents a Multipath QoS Routing protocol for iv supporting DiffServ (MQRD), which combines the advantages of NDMR and DiffServ. The protocol can classify network traffic into different priority levels and apply priority scheduling and queuing management mechanisms to obtain QoS guarantees

    On I/O Performance and Cost Efficiency of Cloud Storage: A Client\u27s Perspective

    Cloud storage has gained increasing popularity in the past few years. In cloud storage, data are stored in the service provider’s data centers; users access data via the network and pay the fees based on the service usage. For such a new storage model, our prior wisdom and optimization schemes on conventional storage may not remain valid nor applicable to the emerging cloud storage. In this dissertation, we focus on understanding and optimizing the I/O performance and cost efficiency of cloud storage from a client’s perspective. We first conduct a comprehensive study to gain insight into the I/O performance behaviors of cloud storage from the client side. Through extensive experiments, we have obtained several critical findings and useful implications for system optimization. We then design a client cache framework, called Pacaca, to further improve end-to-end performance of cloud storage. Pacaca seamlessly integrates parallelized prefetching and cost-aware caching by utilizing the parallelism potential and object correlations of cloud storage. In addition to improving system performance, we have also made efforts to reduce the monetary cost of using cloud storage services by proposing a latency- and cost-aware client caching scheme, called GDS-LC, which can achieve two optimization goals for using cloud storage services: low access latency and low monetary cost. Our experimental results show that our proposed client-side solutions significantly outperform traditional methods. Our study contributes to inspiring the community to reconsider system optimization methods in the cloud environment, especially for the purpose of integrating cloud storage into the current storage stack as a primary storage layer
