The News give a summary of the scientific work being done in Dagstuhl. Each Dagstuhl Seminar is presented by a small abstract describing the contents and scientific highlights of the seminar as well as the perspectives or challenges of the research topic
A Domain-Specific Language and Editor for Parallel Particle Methods
Domain-specific languages (DSLs) are of increasing importance in scientific
high-performance computing to reduce development costs, raise the level of
abstraction and, thus, ease scientific programming. However, designing and
implementing DSLs is not an easy task, as it requires knowledge of the
application domain and experience in language engineering and compilers.
Consequently, many DSLs follow a weak approach using macros or text generators,
which lack many of the features that make a DSL a comfortable for programmers.
Some of these features---e.g., syntax highlighting, type inference, error
reporting, and code completion---are easily provided by language workbenches,
which combine language engineering techniques and tools in a common ecosystem.
In this paper, we present the Parallel Particle-Mesh Environment (PPME), a DSL
and development environment for numerical simulations based on particle methods
and hybrid particle-mesh methods. PPME uses the meta programming system (MPS),
a projectional language workbench. PPME is the successor of the Parallel
Particle-Mesh Language (PPML), a Fortran-based DSL that used conventional
implementation strategies. We analyze and compare both languages and
demonstrate how the programmer's experience can be improved using static
analyses and projectional editing. Furthermore, we present an explicit domain
model for particle abstractions and the first formal type system for particle

Integrating formal reasoning into component-based approach to reconfigurable distributed systems
Distributed computing is becoming ubiquitous in recent years in many areas, especially the
scientific and industrial ones, where the processing power - even that of supercomputers - never
seems to be enough. Grid systems were born out of necessity, and had to grow quickly to
meet requirements which evolved over time, becoming today’s complex systems. Even the
simplest distributed system nowadays is expected to have some basic functionalities, such as
resources and execution management, security and optimization features, data control, etc. The
complexity of Grid applications is also accentuated by their distributed nature, making them
some of the most elaborate systems to date. It is often too easy that these intricate systems
happen to fall in some kind of failure, it being a software bug, or plain simple human error; and
if such a failure occurs, it is not always the case that the system can recover from it, possibly
meaning hours of wasted computational power.
In this thesis, some of the problems which are at the core of the development and mainte-
nance of Grid software applications are addressed by introducing novel and solid approaches
to their solution. The difficulty of Grid systems to deal with unforeseen and unexpected cir-
cumstances resulting from dynamic reconfiguration can be identified. Such problems are often
related to the fact that Grid applications are large, distributed and prone to resource failures.
This research has produced a methodology for the solution of this problem by analysing the
structure of distributed systems and their reliance on the environment which they sit upon, often
overlooked when dealing with these types of scenarios. It is concluded that the way that Grid applications interact with the infrastructure is not sufficiently addressed and a novel approach
is developed in which formal verification methods are integrated with distributed applications
development and deployment in a way that includes the environment. This approach allows for
reconfiguration scenarios in distributed applications to proceed in a safe and controlled way, as
demonstrated by the development of a prototype application
Modelling and analyzing adaptive self-assembling strategies with Maude
Building adaptive systems with predictable emergent behavior is a challenging task and it is becoming a critical need. The research community has accepted the challenge by introducing approaches of various nature: from software architectures, to programming paradigms, to analysis techniques. We recently proposed a conceptual framework for adaptation centered around the role of control data. In this paper we show that it can be naturally realized in a reflective logical language like Maude by using the Reflective Russian Dolls model. Moreover, we exploit this model to specify, validate and analyse a prominent example of adaptive system: robot swarms equipped with self-assembly strategies. Agoric computation: trust and cyber-physical systems
In the past two decades advances in miniaturisation and economies of scale have led to the emergence of billions of connected components that have provided both a spur and a blueprint for the development of smart products acting in specialised environments which are uniquely identifiable, localisable, and capable of autonomy. Adopting the computational perspective of multi-agent systems (MAS) as a technological abstraction married with the engineering perspective of cyber-physical systems (CPS) has provided fertile ground for designing, developing and deploying software applications in smart automated context such as manufacturing, power grids, avionics, healthcare and logistics, capable of being decentralised, intelligent, reconfigurable, modular, flexible, robust, adaptive and responsive. Current agent technologies are, however, ill suited for information-based environments, making it difficult to formalise and implement multiagent systems based on inherently dynamical functional concepts such as trust and reliability, which present special challenges when scaling from small to large systems of agents. To overcome such challenges, it is useful to adopt a unified approach which we term agoric computation, integrating logical, mathematical and programming concepts towards the development of agent-based solutions based on recursive, compositional principles, where smaller systems feed via directed information flows into larger hierarchical systems that define their global environment. Considering information as an integral part of the environment naturally defines a web of operations where components of a systems are wired in some way and each set of inputs and outputs are allowed to carry some value. These operations are stateless abstractions and procedures that act on some stateful cells that cumulate partial information, and it is possible to compose such abstractions into higher-level ones, using a publish-and-subscribe interaction model that keeps track of update messages between abstractions and values in the data. In this thesis we review the logical and mathematical basis of such abstractions and take steps towards the software implementation of agoric modelling as a framework for simulation and verification of the reliability of increasingly complex systems, and report on experimental results related to a few select applications, such as stigmergic interaction in mobile robotics, integrating raw data into agent perceptions, trust and trustworthiness in orchestrated open systems, computing the epistemic cost of trust when reasoning in networks of agents seeded with contradictory information, and trust models for distributed ledgers in the Internet of Things (IoT); and provide a roadmap
for future developments of our research

This volume contains the Preliminary Proceedings of the 2005 IEEE ISoLA Workshop on Leveraging Applications of Formal Methods, Verification, and Validation, with a special track on the theme of Formal Methods in Human and Robotic Space Exploration. The workshop was held on 23-24 September 2005 at the Loyola College Graduate Center, Columbia, MD, USA. The idea behind the Workshop arose from the experience and feedback of ISoLA 2004, the 1st International Symposium on Leveraging Applications of Formal Methods held in Paphos (Cyprus) last October-November. ISoLA 2004 served the need of providing a forum for developers, users, and researchers to discuss issues related to the adoption and use of rigorous tools and methods for the specification, analysis, verification, certification, construction, test, and maintenance of systems from the point of view of their different application domains
Intelligent Computing: The Latest Advances, Challenges and Future
Computing is a critical driving force in the development of human
civilization. In recent years, we have witnessed the emergence of intelligent
computing, a new computing paradigm that is reshaping traditional computing and
promoting digital revolution in the era of big data, artificial intelligence
and internet-of-things with new computing theories, architectures, methods,
systems, and applications. Intelligent computing has greatly broadened the
scope of computing, extending it from traditional computing on data to
increasingly diverse computing paradigms such as perceptual intelligence,
cognitive intelligence, autonomous intelligence, and human-computer fusion
intelligence. Intelligence and computing have undergone paths of different
evolution and development for a long time but have become increasingly
intertwined in recent years: intelligent computing is not only
intelligence-oriented but also intelligence-driven. Such cross-fertilization
has prompted the emergence and rapid advancement of intelligent computing.
Intelligent computing is still in its infancy and an abundance of innovations
in the theories, systems, and applications of intelligent computing are
expected to occur soon. We present the first comprehensive survey of literature
on intelligent computing, covering its theory fundamentals, the technological
fusion of intelligence and computing, important applications, challenges, and
future perspectives. We believe that this survey is highly timely and will
provide a comprehensive reference and cast valuable insights into intelligent
computing for academic and industrial researchers and practitioners
Collaborative Verification-Driven Engineering of Hybrid Systems
Hybrid systems with both discrete and continuous dynamics are an important
model for real-world cyber-physical systems. The key challenge is to ensure
their correct functioning w.r.t. safety requirements. Promising techniques to
ensure safety seem to be model-driven engineering to develop hybrid systems in
a well-defined and traceable manner, and formal verification to prove their
correctness. Their combination forms the vision of verification-driven
engineering. Often, hybrid systems are rather complex in that they require
expertise from many domains (e.g., robotics, control systems, computer science,
software engineering, and mechanical engineering). Moreover, despite the
remarkable progress in automating formal verification of hybrid systems, the
construction of proofs of complex systems often requires nontrivial human
guidance, since hybrid systems verification tools solve undecidable problems.
It is, thus, not uncommon for development and verification teams to consist of
many players with diverse expertise. This paper introduces a
verification-driven engineering toolset that extends our previous work on
hybrid and arithmetic verification with tools for (i) graphical (UML) and
textual modeling of hybrid systems, (ii) exchanging and comparing models and
proofs, and (iii) managing verification tasks. This toolset makes it easier to
tackle large-scale verification tasks
