    Two-Hop Routing with Traffic-Differentiation for QoS Guarantee in Wireless Sensor Networks

    This paper proposes a Traffic-Differentiated Two-Hop Routing protocol for Quality of Service (QoS) in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). It targets WSN applications having different types of data traffic with several priorities. The protocol achieves to increase Packet Reception Ratio (PRR) and reduce end-to-end delay while considering multi-queue priority policy, two-hop neighborhood information, link reliability and power efficiency. The protocol is modular and utilizes effective methods for estimating the link metrics. Numerical results show that the proposed protocol is a feasible solution to addresses QoS service differenti- ation for traffic with different priorities.Comment: 13 page

    Traffic-differentiation-based modular QoS localized routing for wireless sensor networks

    A new localized quality of service (QoS) routing protocol for wireless sensor networks (WSN) is proposed in this paper. The proposed protocol targets WSN's applications having different types of data traffic. It is based on differentiating QoS requirements according to the data type, which enables to provide several and customized QoS metrics for each traffic category. With each packet, the protocol attempts to fulfill the required data-related QoS metric(s) while considering power efficiency. It is modular and uses geographical information, which eliminates the need of propagating routing information. For link quality estimation, the protocol employs distributed, memory and computation efficient mechanisms. It uses a multisink single-path approach to increase reliability. To our knowledge, this protocol is the first that makes use of the diversity in data traffic while considering latency, reliability, residual energy in sensor nodes, and transmission power between nodes to cast QoS metrics as a multiobjective problem. The proposed protocol can operate with any medium access control (MAC) protocol, provided that it employs an acknowledgment (ACK) mechanism. Extensive simulation study with scenarios of 900 nodes shows the proposed protocol outperforms all comparable state-of-the-art QoS and localized routing protocols.     Cross-layer design of multi-hop wireless networks

    MULTI -hop wireless networks are usually defined as a collection of nodes equipped with radio transmitters, which not only have the capability to communicate each other in a multi-hop fashion, but also to route each others’ data packets. The distributed nature of such networks makes them suitable for a variety of applications where there are no assumed reliable central entities, or controllers, and may significantly improve the scalability issues of conventional single-hop wireless networks. This Ph.D. dissertation mainly investigates two aspects of the research issues related to the efficient multi-hop wireless networks design, namely: (a) network protocols and (b) network management, both in cross-layer design paradigms to ensure the notion of service quality, such as quality of service (QoS) in wireless mesh networks (WMNs) for backhaul applications and quality of information (QoI) in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) for sensing tasks. Throughout the presentation of this Ph.D. dissertation, different network settings are used as illustrative examples, however the proposed algorithms, methodologies, protocols, and models are not restricted in the considered networks, but rather have wide applicability. First, this dissertation proposes a cross-layer design framework integrating a distributed proportional-fair scheduler and a QoS routing algorithm, while using WMNs as an illustrative example. The proposed approach has significant performance gain compared with other network protocols. Second, this dissertation proposes a generic admission control methodology for any packet network, wired and wireless, by modeling the network as a black box, and using a generic mathematical 0. Abstract 3 function and Taylor expansion to capture the admission impact. Third, this dissertation further enhances the previous designs by proposing a negotiation process, to bridge the applications’ service quality demands and the resource management, while using WSNs as an illustrative example. This approach allows the negotiation among different service classes and WSN resource allocations to reach the optimal operational status. Finally, the guarantees of the service quality are extended to the environment of multiple, disconnected, mobile subnetworks, where the question of how to maintain communications using dynamically controlled, unmanned data ferries is investigated

    Mathematical Models and Algorithms for Network Flow Problems Arising in Wireless Sensor Network Applications

    We examine multiple variations on two classical network flow problems, the maximum flow and minimum-cost flow problems. These two problems are well-studied within the optimization community, and many models and algorithms have been presented for their solution. Due to the unique characteristics of the problems we consider, existing approaches cannot be directly applied. The problem variations we examine commonly arise in wireless sensor network (WSN) applications. A WSN consists of a set of sensors and collection sinks that gather and analyze environmental conditions. In addition to providing a taxonomy of relevant literature, we present mathematical programming models and algorithms for solving such problems. First, we consider a variation of the maximum flow problem having node-capacity restrictions. As an alternative to solving a single linear programming (LP) model, we present two alternative solution techniques. The first iteratively solves two smaller auxiliary LP models, and the second is a heuristic approach that avoids solving any LP. We also examine a variation of the maximum flow problem having semicontinuous restrictions that requires the flow, if positive, on any path to be greater than or equal to a minimum threshold. To avoid solving a mixed-integer programming (MIP) model, we present a branch-and-price algorithm that significantly improves the computational time required to solve the problem. Finally, we study two dynamic network flow problems that arise in wireless sensor networks under non-simultaneous flow assumptions. We first consider a dynamic maximum flow problem that requires an arc to transmit a minimum amount of flow each time it begins transmission. We present an MIP for solving this problem along with a heuristic algorithm for its solution. Additionally, we study a dynamic minimum-cost flow problem, in which an additional cost is incurred each time an arc begins transmission. In addition to an MIP, we present an exact algorithm that iteratively solves a relaxed version of the MIP until an optimal solution is found

    Unified Power Management in Wireless Sensor Networks, Doctoral Dissertation, August 2006

    Radio power management is of paramount concern in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) that must achieve long lifetimes on scarce amount of energy. Previous work has treated communication and sensing separately, which is insufficient for a common class of sensor networks that must satisfy both sensing and communication requirements. Furthermore, previous approaches focused on reducing energy consumption in individual radio states resulting in suboptimal solutions. Finally, existing power management protocols often assume simplistic models that cannot accurately reflect the sensing and communication properties of real-world WSNs. We develop a unified power management approach to address these issues. We first analyze the relationship between sensing and communication performance of WSNs. We show that sensing coverage often leads to good network connectivity and geographic routing performance, which provides insights into unified power management under both sensing and communication performance requirements. We then develop a novel approach called Minimum Power Configuration that ingegrates the power consumption in different radio states into a unified optimization framework. Finally, we develop two power management protocols that account for realistic communication and sensing properties of WSNs. Configurable Topology Control can configure a network topology to achieve desired path quality in presence of asymmetric and lossy links. Co-Grid is a coverage maintenance protocol that adopts a probabilistic sensing model. Co-Grid can satisfy desirable sensing QoS requirements (i.e., detection probability and false alarm rate) based on a distributed data fusion model

    A New Method for Intelligent Message Network Management in Ubiquitous Sensor Networks

    Ubiquitous Sensor Network (USN) computing is a useful technology forautonomic integrating in different environments which can be available anywhere.Managing USN plays an important role on the availability of nodes and paths. Inorder to manage nodes there is a cyclic route starts from manager, passing nodes,and come back to manager as feedback. In this paper, a new, self-optimizing methodpresented for finding this cyclic path by combining epsilon greedy and geneticalgorithm and then it is compared with other well-known methods in terms of cost ofthe route they find and the power consumption. The results show that the route thatis found by our new method costs at least 53% less than other methods. However insome cases, it uses 32% more energy for finding the route which can be compensatein traversing the shorter route. The overall simulation results in prototype data showthe effectiveness of the proposed method

    Congestion control protocols in wireless sensor networks: A survey

    The performance of wireless sensor networks (WSN) is affected by the lossy communication medium, application diversity, dense deployment, limited processing power and storage capacity, frequent topology change. All these limitations provide significant and unique design challenges to data transport control in wireless sensor networks. An effective transport protocol should consider reliable message delivery, energy-efficiency, quality of service and congestion control. The latter is vital for achieving a high throughput and a long network lifetime. Despite the huge number of protocols proposed in the literature, congestion control in WSN remains challenging. A review and taxonomy of the state-of-the-art protocols from the literature up to 2013 is provided in this paper. First, depending on the control policy, the protocols are divided into resource control vs. traffic control. Traffic control protocols are either reactive or preventive (avoiding). Reactive solutions are classified following the reaction scale, while preventive solutions are split up into buffer limitation vs. interference control.
