As for the visual code, it discusses the illustration’s task of this picture book and the verbal code with so minimalist amount of words. This verbal code offers the possibility of recognising a linear narrative structure for children’s tales. On the other hand, the value of diversity is exposed, because the metaphoric image is open to different interpretations. All in all, to rediscover the concept of identity construction, taking into account that gender stereotypes are being defined at early years

Through an analysis of the relationship between verbal and visual texts into the book "Little Blue and Little Yellow" by Leo Lionni (2011), this article's objective is to establish an intermediate study of this work, trying to comprehend, mainly, the role of the color inside this narrative spectrum, giving it a relevance in relation with the story and expanding its possibilities of meanings. This paper aimed to apply Fromm s theories of social character and insights into the human being as the basis of the educational philosophy of EE Development of a social character with predominance of the being mode of existence is not feasible because of the unpredictability of the outcome An attempt to contrive another educational philosophy and to build another theory of EE that promises viability would be fruitless The tale of EE is a failed project We can see how Fromm s theories of society and his view of man can update and enrich our visions of education we have in hand Likewise now that we look at environmental picture books as a framework we can recognize the being mode more realistically What then is the significance of EE Recognizing the pre-existing EE rediscovering the lost teaching and learning practice is the new significance of EE Look Here are traces of E

    The ornament of grammar

    Get PDF
Part of an ongoing research project to interpret linguistic grammar visually, this essay presents initial experiments to visualise rhetorical patterns in English sentences. Creative contextualisation is offered with reference to earlier visual forms that were treated as a kind of language. A certain strand in Modernism - in particular that running through the Bauhaus which used abstract devices as a foundational design syntax - opened the way for post-war picture books to activate the narrative potential of simple coloured shapes; and, again, avant-garde musical scores from the 1950s onwards used exploratory graphic notations to instigate expressive new treatments of sound. My own visualisations are playful in spirit but posit a serious idea that grammar works by means of deep aesthetic tendencies. My case studies - featuring a model user and a model abuser of English - flag up common patterns in typical sentence construction under seven descriptive labels. Ultimately the essay suggests that Illustration might flourish at the level of the sentence, the basic unit of meaning within word-based language and, in very simple terms, the expression of a thought. Ornamenting the rhythm and flow of how a sentence operates is one means of ‘seeing’ a voice give shape to thought

Story retelling is a powerful learning experience for children in the classroom. It provides opportunities for them to engage in the thinking-language processes thus extending their abilities. When retelling a story, children create their own construct from a story they have listened to or read. Retellings are also useful as a source of information for teachers. When used for assessment, teachers can observe children while engaged in the process of retelling to understand their sense of story
