Access to recorded interviews: A research agenda

    Get PDF
Recorded interviews form a rich basis for scholarly inquiry. Examples include oral histories, community memory projects, and interviews conducted for broadcast media. Emerging technologies offer the potential to radically transform the way in which recorded interviews are made accessible, but this vision will demand substantial investments from a broad range of research communities. This article reviews the present state of practice for making recorded interviews available and the state-of-the-art for key component technologies. A large number of important research issues are identified, and from that set of issues, a coherent research agenda is proposed

    Analyzing collaborative learning processes automatically

In this article we describe the emerging area of text classification research focused on the problem of collaborative learning process analysis both from a broad perspective and more specifically in terms of a publicly available tool set called TagHelper tools. Analyzing the variety of pedagogically valuable facets of learners’ interactions is a time consuming and effortful process. Improving automated analyses of such highly valued processes of collaborative learning by adapting and applying recent text classification technologies would make it a less arduous task to obtain insights from corpus data. This endeavor also holds the potential for enabling substantially improved on-line instruction both by providing teachers and facilitators with reports about the groups they are moderating and by triggering context sensitive collaborative learning support on an as-needed basis. In this article, we report on an interdisciplinary research project, which has been investigating the effectiveness of applying text classification technology to a large CSCL corpus that has been analyzed by human coders using a theory-based multidimensional coding scheme. We report promising results and include an in-depth discussion of important issues such as reliability, validity, and efficiency that should be considered when deciding on the appropriateness of adopting a new technology such as TagHelper tools. One major technical contribution of this work is a demonstration that an important piece of the work towards making text classification technology effective for this purpose is designing and building linguistic pattern detectors, otherwise known as features, that can be extracted reliably from texts and that have high predictive power for the categories of discourse actions that the CSCL community is interested in

Multilingual manager: a new strategic role in organizations

Today?s knowledge management (KM) systems seldom account for language management and, especially, multilingual information processing. Document management is one of the strongest components of KM systems. If these systems do not include a multilingual knowledge management policy, intranet searches, excessive document space occupancy and redundant information slow down what are the most effective processes in a single language environment. In this paper, we model information flow from the sources of knowledge to the persons/systems searching for specific information. Within this framework, we focus on the importance of multilingual information processing, which is a hugely complex component of modern organizations

Overcoming Language Barriers Through an Interactive Platform for Public Engagement

The article discusses the framework for a city visioning platform which can offer a public participation in energy-related actions and support the social acceptance of energy transition. The platform has a dual feature: a. the interactivity of the platform is based on crowd-sourcing tools, open linked data approach, trend mining and scenario building tools to address the gaps in urban planning for energy supply, traffic management and governance practices that have been criticized for being exclusive, top-down and short sighted; b. the platform will act as an intercultural & linguistic mediator by offering the opportunity to the community to interact with people from different cultures in all European languages, stimulation of interest and critical thinking, the opportunity to engage in constructive dialogues and projects, capitalizing on the skills and creativity of the participants

Report submitted as a result, in part, of participation in the Language Flagship Technology Innovation Center's Summer internship program in Summer 2019.The field of Natural Language Processing (NLP) combines computer science, linguistic theory, and mathematics. Natural Language Processing applications aim at equipping computers with human linguistic knowledge. Applications such as Information Retrieval, Machine Translation, spelling checkers, as well as text sum- marization, are intriguing fields that exploit the techniques of NLP. Text summariza- tion represents an important NLP task that simplifies various reading tasks. These NLP-based text summarization tasks can be utilized for the benefits of language acquisition.Language Flagship Technology Innovation Cente
