    Cross-layer modeling and optimization of next-generation internet networks

    Scaling traditional telecommunication networks so that they are able to cope with the volume of future traffic demands and the stringent European Commission (EC) regulations on emissions would entail unaffordable investments. For this very reason, the design of an innovative ultra-high bandwidth power-efficient network architecture is nowadays a bold topic within the research community. So far, the independent evolution of network layers has resulted in isolated, and hence, far-from-optimal contributions, which have eventually led to the issues today's networks are facing such as inefficient energy strategy, limited network scalability and flexibility, reduced network manageability and increased overall network and customer services costs. Consequently, there is currently large consensus among network operators and the research community that cross-layer interaction and coordination is fundamental for the proper architectural design of next-generation Internet networks. This thesis actively contributes to the this goal by addressing the modeling, optimization and performance analysis of a set of potential technologies to be deployed in future cross-layer network architectures. By applying a transversal design approach (i.e., joint consideration of several network layers), we aim for achieving the maximization of the integration of the different network layers involved in each specific problem. To this end, Part I provides a comprehensive evaluation of optical transport networks (OTNs) based on layer 2 (L2) sub-wavelength switching (SWS) technologies, also taking into consideration the impact of physical layer impairments (PLIs) (L0 phenomena). Indeed, the recent and relevant advances in optical technologies have dramatically increased the impact that PLIs have on the optical signal quality, particularly in the context of SWS networks. Then, in Part II of the thesis, we present a set of case studies where it is shown that the application of operations research (OR) methodologies in the desing/planning stage of future cross-layer Internet network architectures leads to the successful joint optimization of key network performance indicators (KPIs) such as cost (i.e., CAPEX/OPEX), resources usage and energy consumption. OR can definitely play an important role by allowing network designers/architects to obtain good near-optimal solutions to real-sized problems within practical running times

    Bit error rate estimation in WiMAX communications at vehicular speeds using Nakagami-m fading model

    The wireless communication industry has experienced a rapid technological evolution from its basic first generation (1G) wireless systems to the latest fourth generation (4G) wireless broadband systems. Wireless broadband systems are becoming increasingly popular with consumers and the technological strength of 4G has played a major role behind the success of wireless broadband systems. The IEEE 802.16m standard of the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) has been accepted as a 4G standard by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in 2011. The IEEE 802.16m is fully optimised for wireless communications in fixed environments and can deliver very high throughput and excellent quality of service. In mobile communication environments however, WiMAX consumers experience a graceful degradation of service as a direct function of vehicular speeds. At high vehicular speeds, the throughput drops in WiMAX systems and unless proactive measures such as forward error control and packet size optimisation are adopted and properly adjusted, many applications cannot be facilitated at high vehicular speeds in WiMAX communications. For any proactive measure, bit error rate estimation as a function of vehicular speed, serves as a useful tool. In this thesis, we present an analytical model for bit error rate estimation in WiMAX communications using the Nakagami-m fading model. We also show, through an analysis of the data collected from a practical WiMAX system, that the Nakagami-m model can be made adaptive as a function of speed, to represent fading in fixed environments as well as mobile environments

    Contention techniques for opportunistic communication in wireless mesh networks

    Auf dem Gebiet der drahtlosen Kommunikation und insbesondere auf den tieferen Netzwerkschichten sind gewaltige Fortschritte zu verzeichnen. Innovative Konzepte und Technologien auf der physikalischen Schicht (PHY) gehen dabei zeitnah in zellulĂ€re Netze ein. Drahtlose Maschennetzwerke (WMNs) können mit diesem Innovationstempo nicht mithalten. Die Mehrnutzer-Kommunikation ist ein Grundpfeiler vieler angewandter PHY Technologien, die sich in WMNs nur ungenĂŒgend auf die etablierte Schichtenarchitektur abbilden lĂ€sst. Insbesondere ist das Problem des Scheduling in WMNs inhĂ€rent komplex. Erstaunlicherweise ist der Mehrfachzugriff mit TrĂ€gerprĂŒfung (CSMA) in WMNs asymptotisch optimal obwohl das Verfahren eine geringe DurchfĂŒhrungskomplexitĂ€t aufweist. Daher stellt sich die Frage, in welcher Weise das dem CSMA zugrunde liegende Konzept des konkurrierenden Wettbewerbs (engl. Contention) fĂŒr die Integration innovativer PHY Technologien verwendet werden kann. Opportunistische Kommunikation ist eine Technik, die die inhĂ€renten Besonderheiten des drahtlosen Kanals ausnutzt. In der vorliegenden Dissertation werden CSMA-basierte Protokolle fĂŒr die opportunistische Kommunikation in WMNs entwickelt und evaluiert. Es werden dabei opportunistisches Routing (OR) im zustandslosen Kanal und opportunistisches Scheduling (OS) im zustandsbehafteten Kanal betrachtet. Ziel ist es, den Durchsatz von elastischen PaketflĂŒssen gerecht zu maximieren. Es werden Modelle fĂŒr Überlastkontrolle, Routing und konkurrenzbasierte opportunistische Kommunikation vorgestellt. Am Beispiel von IEEE 802.11 wird illustriert, wie der schichtĂŒbergreifende Entwurf in einem Netzwerksimulator prototypisch implementiert werden kann. Auf Grundlage der Evaluationsresultate kann der Schluss gezogen werden, dass die opportunistische Kommunikation konkurrenzbasiert realisierbar ist. DarĂŒber hinaus steigern die vorgestellten Protokolle den Durchsatz im Vergleich zu etablierten Lösungen wie etwa DCF, DSR, ExOR, RBAR und ETT.In the field of wireless communication, a tremendous progress can be observed especially at the lower layers. Innovative physical layer (PHY) concepts and technologies can be rapidly assimilated in cellular networks. Wireless mesh networks (WMNs), on the other hand, cannot keep up with the speed of innovation at the PHY due to their flat and decentralized architecture. Many innovative PHY technologies rely on multi-user communication, so that the established abstraction of the network stack does not work well for WMNs. The scheduling problem in WMNs is inherent complex. Surprisingly, carrier sense multiple access (CSMA) in WMNs is asymptotically utility-optimal even though it has a low computational complexity and does not involve message exchange. Hence, the question arises whether CSMA and the underlying concept of contention allows for the assimilation of advanced PHY technologies into WMNs. In this thesis, we design and evaluate contention protocols based on CSMA for opportunistic communication in WMNs. Opportunistic communication is a technique that relies on multi-user diversity in order to exploit the inherent characteristics of the wireless channel. In particular, we consider opportunistic routing (OR) and opportunistic scheduling (OS) in memoryless and slow fading channels, respectively. We present models for congestion control, routing and contention-based opportunistic communication in WMNs in order to maximize both throughput and fairness of elastic unicast traffic flows. At the instance of IEEE 802.11, we illustrate how the cross-layer algorithms can be implemented within a network simulator prototype. Our evaluation results lead to the conclusion that contention-based opportunistic communication is feasible. Furthermore, the proposed protocols increase both throughput and fairness in comparison to state-of-the-art approaches like DCF, DSR, ExOR, RBAR and ETT

    Sustainable supply chain network design integrating logistics outsourcing decisions in the context of uncertainties

    Les fournisseurs de services logistiques (3PLs) possĂšdent des potentialitĂ©s pour activer les pratiques de dĂ©veloppement durables entre les diffĂ©rents partenaires d’une chaĂźne logistique (Supply Chain SC). Il existe un niveau optimal d'intĂ©gration des 3PLs en tant que fournisseurs, pour s’attendre Ă  des performances opĂ©rationnelles Ă©levĂ©es au sein de toute la SC. Ce niveau se traduit par la distinction des activitĂ©s logistiques Ă  externaliser de celles Ă  effectuer en interne. Une fois que les activitĂ©s logistiques externalisĂ©s sont stratĂ©giquement identifiĂ©es, et tactiquement dimensionnĂ©es, elles doivent ĂȘtre effectuĂ©es par des 3PLs appropriĂ©s afin d’endurer les performances Ă©conomiques ; sociales ; et environnementales de la SC. La prĂ©sente thĂšse dĂ©veloppe une approche holistique pour concevoir une SC durable intĂ©grant les 3PLs, dans un contexte incertain d’affaires et politique de carbone. PremiĂšrement, une approche de modĂ©lisation stochastique en deux Ă©tapes est suggĂ©rĂ©e pour optimiser Ă  la fois le niveau d'intĂ©gration des 3PLs, et le niveau d'investissement en technologies sobres au carbone, et ce dans le contexte d’une SC rĂ©siliente aux changements climatiques. Notre SC est structurĂ©e de façon Ă  capturer trois principales prĂ©occupations du Supply Chain Management d’une entreprise focale FC (e. g. le fabricant) : SĂ©curitĂ© d’approvisionnement, Segmentation de distribution, et ResponsabilitĂ© Ă©largie des producteurs. La premiĂšre Ă©tape de l'approche de modĂ©lisation suggĂšre un plan stochastique basĂ© sur des scenarios plus probables, afin de capturer les incertitudes inhĂ©rentes Ă  tout environnement d’affaires (e. g. la fluctuation de la demande des diffĂ©rents produits ; la qualitĂ© et la quantitĂ© de retour des produits dĂ©jĂ  utilisĂ©s ; et l’évolution des diffĂ©rents coĂ»ts logistiques en fonction du temps). Puis, elle propose un modĂšle de programmation stochastique bi-objectif, multi-pĂ©riode, et multi-produit. Le modĂšle de programmation quadratique, et non linĂ©aire consiste Ă  minimiser simultanĂ©ment le coĂ»t logistique total espĂ©rĂ©, et les Ă©missions de Gaz Ă  effet de Serre de la SC fermĂ©e. L'exĂ©cution du modĂšle au moyen d'un algorithme basĂ© sur la mĂ©thode Epsilon-contraint conduit Ă  un ensemble de configurations Pareto optimales d’une SC dĂ©- carbonisĂ©e, avant tout investissement en technologie sobre au carbone. Chacune de ces configurations sĂ©pare les activitĂ©s logistiques Ă  externaliser de celles Ă  effectuer en interne. La deuxiĂšme Ă©tape de l'approche de modĂ©lisation permet aux dĂ©cideurs de choisir la meilleure configuration de la SC parmi les configurations Pareto optimales identifiĂ©es. Le concept de Prix du Carbone Interne est utilisĂ© pour Ă©tablir un plan stochastique du prix de carbone, dans le cadre d'un rĂ©gime de dĂ©claration volontaire du carbone. Nous proposons un ensemble des technologies sobres au carbone, dans le domaine de transport des marchandises, disposĂ©es Ă  concourir pour contrer les politiques incertaines de carbone. Un modĂšle stochastique combinatoire, et linĂ©aire est dĂ©veloppĂ© pour minimiser le coĂ»t total espĂ©rĂ©, sous contraintes de l’abattement du carbone; limitation du budget, et la prioritĂ© attribuĂ©e pour chaque Technologie RĂ©ductrice de carbone (Low Carbone Reduction LCR). L'injection de chaque solution Pareto dans le modĂšle, et la rĂ©solution du modĂšle conduisent Ă  sĂ©lectionner la configuration de la SC, la plus rĂ©siliente aux changements climatiques. Cette configuration dĂ©finit non seulement le plan d'investissement optimal en LCR, mais aussi le niveau optimal d’externalisation de la logistique dans la SC. DeuxiĂšmement, une fois que les activitĂ©s logistiques Ă  externaliser sont stratĂ©giquement dĂ©finies et tactiquement dimensionnĂ©es, elles ont besoin d’ĂȘtre effectuĂ©es par des 3PL appropriĂ©es, afin de soutenir la FC Ă  construire une SC durable et rĂ©siliente. Nous suggĂ©rons DEA-QFD / Fuzzy AHP- Conception robuste de Taguchi : Une approche intĂ©grĂ©e & robuste, pour sĂ©lectionner les 3PL candidats les plus efficients. Les critĂšres durables et les risques liĂ©s Ă  l’environnement d’affaires, sont identifiĂ©s, classĂ©s et ordonnĂ©s. Le DĂ©ploiement de la Fonction QualitĂ© (QFD) est renforcĂ© par le Processus HiĂ©rarchique Analytique (AHP), et par la logique floue pour dĂ©terminer avec consistance l'importance relative de chaque facteur de dĂ©cision, et ce, conformĂ©ment aux besoins logistiques rĂ©els, et stratĂ©gies d'affaires de la FC. L’Analyse d’Enveloppement des DonnĂ©es (DEA) Data Envelopment Analysis conduit Ă  limiter la liste des candidats, uniquement Ă  ceux d’efficiences comparables, et donc excluant tout candidat moins efficient. La technique de conception robuste Taguchi permet de rĂ©aliser un plan d'expĂ©rience qui dĂ©termine un candidat idĂ©al nommĂ© 'optimum de Taguchi' ; un Benchmark pour comparer les 3PLs candidats. Par suite, le 3PL le plus efficient est celui le plus proche de cet optimum. Nous conduisons actuellement une Ă©tude de cas d’une entreprise qui fabrique et commercialise les fours Ă  micro-ondes pour valider la modĂ©lisation stochastique en deux Ă©tapes. Certains aspects concernant l’application de l’approche sont reportĂ©s. Enfin, un exemple de sĂ©lection d’un 3PL durable pour s’occuper de la logistique inverse est fourni, pour dĂ©montrer l'applicabilitĂ© de l'approche intĂ©grĂ©e & robuste, et montrer sa puissance par rapport aux approches populaires de sĂ©lection.The Third-Party Logistics service providers (3PLs) have the potentialities to activate sustainable practices between different partners of a Supply Chain (SC). There exists an optimal level of integrating 3PLs as suppliers of a Focal Company within the SC, to expect for high operational performances. This level leads to distinguish all the logistics activities to outsource from those to perform in-house. Once the outsourced logistics activities are strategically identified, and tactically dimensioned, they need to be performed by appropriate 3PLs to sustain economic, social and environmental performances of the SC. The present thesis develops a holistic approach to design a sustainable supply chain integrating 3PLs, in the context of business and carbon policy uncertainties. First, a two-stage stochastic modelling approach is suggested to optimize both the level of 3PL integration, and of Low Carbon Reduction LCR investment within a climate change resilient SC. Our SC is structured to capture three main SC management issues of the Focal Company FC (e.g. The manufacturer) : Security of Supplies; Distribution Segmentation; and Extended Producer Responsibility. The first-stage of the modelling approach suggests a stochastic plan based scenarios capturing business uncertainties, and proposes a two-objective, multi-period, and multi-product programming model, for minimizing simultaneously, the expected logistics total cost, and the Green House Gas GHG emissions of the whole SC. The run of the model by means of a suggested Epsilon-constraint algorithm leads to a set of Pareto optimal decarbonized SC configurations, before any LCR investment. Each one of these configurations distinguishes the logistics activities to be outsourced, from those to be performed in-house. The second-stage of the modelling approach helps the decision makers to select the best Pareto optimal SC configuration. The concept of internal carbon price is used to establish a stochastic plan of carbon price in the context of a voluntary carbon disclosure regime, and we propose a set of LCR technologies in the freight transportation domain ready to compete for counteracting the uncertain carbon policies. A combinatory model is developed to minimize the total expected cost, under the constraints of; carbon abatement, budget limitation, and LCR investment priorities. The injection of each Pareto optimal solution in the model, and the resolution lead to select the most efficient climate resilient SC configuration, which defines not only the optimal plan of LCR investment, but the optimal level of logistics outsourcing within the SC as well. Secondly, once the outsourced logistics are strategically defined they need to be performed by appropriate 3PLs for supporting the FC to build a Sustainable SC. We suggest the DEA-QFD/Fuzzy AHP-Taguchi Robust Design: a robust integrated selection approach to select the most efficient 3PL candidates. Sustainable criteria, and risks related to business environment are identified, categorized, and ordered. Quality Function Deployment (QFD) is reinforced by Analytic Hierarchic Process (AHP), and Fuzzy logic, to consistently determine the relative importance of each decision factor according to the real logistics needs, and business strategies of the FC. Data Envelopment Analysis leads to shorten the list of candidates to only those of comparative efficiencies. The Taguchi Robust Design technique allows to perform a plan of experiment, for determining an ideal candidate named ‘optimum of Taguchi’. This benchmark is used to compare the remainder 3Pls candidates, and the most efficient 3PL is the closest one to this optimum.We are currently conducting a case study of a company that manufactures and markets microwave ovens for validating the two-stage stochastic approach, and certain aspects of its implementation are provided. Finally, an example of selecting a sustainable 3PL, to handle reverse logistics is given for demonstrating the applicability of the integrated & robust approach, and showing its power compared to popular selection approaches.     A new connectivity strategy for wireless mesh networks using dynamic spectrum access

    The introduction of Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA) marked an important juncture in the evolution of wireless networks. DSA is a spectrum assignment paradigm where devices are able to make real-time adjustment to their spectrum usage and adapt to changes in their spectral environment to meet performance objectives. DSA allows spectrum to be used more efficiently and may be considered as a viable approach to the ever increasing demand for spectrum in urban areas and the need for coverage extension to unconnected communities. While DSA can be applied to any spectrum band, the initial focus has been in the Ultra-High Frequency (UHF) band traditionally used for television broadcast because the band is lightly occupied and also happens to be ideal spectrum for sparsely populated rural areas. Wireless access in general is said to offer the most hope in extending connectivity to rural and unconnected peri-urban communities. Wireless Mesh Networks (WMN) in particular offer several attractive characteristics such as multi-hopping, ad-hoc networking, capabilities of self-organising and self-healing, hence the focus on WMNs. Motivated by the desire to leverage DSA for mesh networking, this research revisits the aspect of connectivity in WMNs with DSA. The advantages of DSA when combined with mesh networking not only build on the benefits, but also creates additional challenges. The study seeks to address the connectivity challenge across three key dimensions, namely network formation, link metric and multi-link utilisation. To start with, one of the conundrums faced in WMNs with DSA is that the current 802.11s mesh standard provides limited support for DSA, while DSA related standards such as 802.22 provide limited support for mesh networking. This gap in standardisation complicates the integration of DSA in WMNs as several issues are left outside the scope of the applicable standard. This dissertation highlights the inadequacy of the current MAC protocol in ensuring TVWS regulation compliance in multi-hop environments and proposes a logical link MAC sub-layer procedure to fill the gap. A network is considered compliant in this context if each node operates on a channel that it is allowed to use as determined for example, by the spectrum database. Using a combination of prototypical experiments, simulation and numerical analysis, it is shown that the proposed protocol ensures network formation is accomplished in a manner that is compliant with TVWS regulation. Having tackled the compliance problem at the mesh formation level, the next logical step was to explore performance improvement avenues. Considering the importance of routing in WMNs, the study evaluates link characterisation to determine suitable metric for routing purposes. Along this dimension, the research makes two main contributions. Firstly, A-link-metric (Augmented Link Metric) approach for WMN with DSA is proposed. A-link-metric reinforces existing metrics to factor in characteristics of a DSA channel, which is essential to improve the routing protocol's ranking of links for optimal path selection. Secondly, in response to the question of “which one is the suitable metric?”, the Dynamic Path Metric Selection (DPMeS) concept is introduced. The principal idea is to mechanise the routing protocol such that it assesses the network via a distributed probing mechanism and dynamically binds the routing metric. Using DPMeS, a routing metric is selected to match the network type and prevailing conditions, which is vital as each routing metric thrives or recedes in performance depending on the scenario. DPMeS is aimed at unifying the years worth of prior studies on routing metrics in WMNs. Simulation results indicate that A-link-metric achieves up to 83.4 % and 34.6 % performance improvement in terms of throughput and end-to-end delay respectively compared to the corresponding base metric (i.e. non-augmented variant). With DPMeS, the routing protocol is expected to yield better performance consistently compared to the fixed metric approach whose performance fluctuates amid changes in network setup and conditions. By and large, DSA-enabled WMN nodes will require access to some fixed spectrum to fall back on when opportunistic spectrum is unavailable. In the absence of fully functional integrated-chip cognitive radios to enable DSA, the immediate feasible solution for the interim is single hardware platforms fitted with multiple transceivers. This configuration results in multi-band multi-radio node capability that lends itself to a variety of link options in terms of transmit/receive radio functionality. The dissertation reports on the experimental performance evaluation of radios operating in the 5 GHz and UHF-TVWS bands for hybrid back-haul links. It is found that individual radios perform differently depending on the operating parameter settings, namely channel, channel-width and transmission power subject to prevailing environmental (both spectral and topographical) conditions. When aggregated, if the radios' data-rates are approximately equal, there is a throughput and round-trip time performance improvement of 44.5 - 61.8 % and 7.5 - 41.9 % respectively. For hybrid links comprising radios with significantly unequal data-rates, this study proposes an adaptive round-robin (ARR) based algorithm for efficient multilink utilisation. Numerical analysis indicate that ARR provides 75 % throughput improvement. These results indicate that network optimisation overall requires both time and frequency division duplexing. Based on the experimental test results, this dissertation presents a three-layered routing framework for multi-link utilisation. The top layer represents the nodes' logical interface to the WMN while the bottom layer corresponds to the underlying physical wireless network interface cards (WNIC). The middle layer is an abstract and reductive representation of the possible and available transmission, and reception options between node pairs, which depends on the number and type of WNICs. Drawing on the experimental results and insight gained, the study builds criteria towards a mechanism for auto selection of the optimal link option. Overall, this study is anticipated to serve as a springboard to stimulate the adoption and integration of DSA in WMNs, and further development in multi-link utilisation strategies to increase capacity.     Dynamic wavelength routing in multifiber WDM networks

    The research, development, and deployment of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology are now evolving at a rapid pace to fulfill the increasing bandwidth requirement and deploy new network services. Routing and wavelength assignment algorithms play a key role in improving the performance of wavelength-routed all-optical networks. We study networks with dynamic wavelength routing and develop accurate analytical models for evaluating the blocking performance under dynamic input traffic in different topologies. Two dynamic routing algorithms are first developed and the performances of the algorithms in single-fiber WDM networks are studied using both analytical models and simulation. We also develop efficient algorithms to optimally place a given number of wavelength converters on a path of a network. Finally we consider the effect of multiple fibers on WDM networks without wavelength conversion. We develop analytical models for evaluating the blocking performance of multifiber networks with fixed-path routing, alternate-path routing, and fixed-path least-congestion routing algorithms. The number of fibers required to provide high performance in multifiber networks with different routing algorithms are also studied
