Multi-Sided Boundary Labeling
In the Boundary Labeling problem, we are given a set of points, referred
to as sites, inside an axis-parallel rectangle , and a set of pairwise
disjoint rectangular labels that are attached to from the outside. The task
is to connect the sites to the labels by non-intersecting rectilinear paths,
so-called leaders, with at most one bend.
In this paper, we study the Multi-Sided Boundary Labeling problem, with
labels lying on at least two sides of the enclosing rectangle. We present a
polynomial-time algorithm that computes a crossing-free leader layout if one
exists. So far, such an algorithm has only been known for the cases in which
labels lie on one side or on two opposite sides of (here a crossing-free
solution always exists). The case where labels may lie on adjacent sides is
more difficult. We present efficient algorithms for testing the existence of a
crossing-free leader layout that labels all sites and also for maximizing the
number of labeled sites in a crossing-free leader layout. For two-sided
boundary labeling with adjacent sides, we further show how to minimize the
total leader length in a crossing-free layout
Labeling Subway Lines
Graphical features on map, charts, diagrams and graph drawings usually must be annotated with text labels in order to convey their meaning. In this paper we focus on a problem that arises when labeling schematized maps, e.g. for subway networks. We present algorithms for labeling points on a line with axis-parallel rectangular labels of equal height. Our aim is to maximize label size under the constraint that all points must be labeled.
Even a seemingly strong simplification of the general point-labeling problem, namely to decide whether a set of points on a horizontal line can be labeled with sliding rectangular labels, turns out to be weakly NPcomplete. This is the first labeling problem that is known to belong to this class. We give a pseudo-polynomial time algorithm for it.
In case of a sloping line points can be labeled with maximum-size square labels in O(n log n) time if four label positions per point are allowed and in O(n 3 log n) time if labels can slide. We also investigate rectangular labels
Flat Foldings of Plane Graphs with Prescribed Angles and Edge Lengths
When can a plane graph with prescribed edge lengths and prescribed angles
(from among \}) be folded flat to lie in an
infinitesimally thin line, without crossings? This problem generalizes the
classic theory of single-vertex flat origami with prescribed mountain-valley
assignment, which corresponds to the case of a cycle graph. We characterize
such flat-foldable plane graphs by two obviously necessary but also sufficient
conditions, proving a conjecture made in 2001: the angles at each vertex should
sum to , and every face of the graph must itself be flat foldable.
This characterization leads to a linear-time algorithm for testing flat
foldability of plane graphs with prescribed edge lengths and angles, and a
polynomial-time algorithm for counting the number of distinct folded states.Comment: 21 pages, 10 figure
Mixed Map Labeling
Point feature map labeling is a geometric problem, in which a set of input
points must be labeled with a set of disjoint rectangles (the bounding boxes of
the label texts). Typically, labeling models either use internal labels, which
must touch their feature point, or external (boundary) labels, which are placed
on one of the four sides of the input points' bounding box and which are
connected to their feature points by crossing-free leader lines. In this paper
we study polynomial-time algorithms for maximizing the number of internal
labels in a mixed labeling model that combines internal and external labels.
The model requires that all leaders are parallel to a given orientation , whose value influences the geometric properties and hence the

Routing congestion analysis and reduction in deep sub-micron VLSI design
Congestion is one of the main optimization objectives in global routing. However, the optimization performance is constrained because the cells are already fixed at this stage. Therefore, designer can save substantial time and resources by detecting and reducing congested regions during the planning stages. An efficient and yet accurate congestion estimation model is crucial to be included in the inner loop of floorplanning and placement design. Heterogeneous Self-Reconfiguring Robotics
Self-reconfiguring (SR) robots are modular systems that can autonomously change shape, or reconfigure, for increased versatility and adaptability in unknown environments. In this thesis, we investigate planning and control for systems of non-identical modules, known as heterogeneous SR robots. Although previous approaches rely on module homogeneity as a critical property, we show that the planning complexity of fundamental algorithmic problems in the heterogeneous case is equivalent to that of systems with identical modules. Primarily, we study the problem of how to plan shape changes while considering the placement of specific modules within the structure. We characterize this key challenge in terms of the amount of free space available to the robot and develop a series of decentralized reconfiguration planning algorithms that assume progressively more severe free space constraints and support reconfiguration among obstacles. In addition, we compose our basic planning techniques in different ways to address problems in the related task domains of positioning modules according to function, locomotion among obstacles, self-repair, and recognizing the achievement of distributed goal-states. We also describe the design of a novel simulation environment, implementation results using this simulator, and experimental results in hardware using a planar SR system called the Crystal Robot. These results encourage development of heterogeneous systems. Our algorithms enhance the versatility and adaptability of SR robots by enabling them to use functionally specialized components to match capability, in addition to shape, to the task at hand
Maximum Area Axis-Aligned Square Packings
Given a point set S={s_1,...s_n} in the unit square U=[0,1]^2, an anchored square packing is a set of n interior-disjoint empty squares in U such that s_i is a corner of the ith square. The reach R(S) of S is the set of points that may be covered by such a packing, that is, the union of all empty squares anchored at points in S.
It is shown that area(R(S))>= 1/2 for every finite set S subset U, and this bound is the best possible. The region R(S) can be computed in O(n log n) time. Finally, we prove that finding a maximum area anchored square packing is NP-complete. This is the first hardness proof for a geometric packing problem where the size of geometric objects in the packing is unrestricted
