    On the interaction structure of linear multi-input feedback control systems

    The closely-related problems of designing reliable feedback stabilization strategy and coordinating decentralized feedbacks are considered. Two approaches are taken. A geometric characterization of the structure of control interaction (and its dual) was first attempted and a concept of structural homomorphism developed based on the idea of 'similarity' of interaction pattern. The idea of finding classes of individual feedback maps that do not 'interfere' with the stabilizing action of each other was developed by identifying the structural properties of nondestabilizing and LQ-optimal feedback maps. Some known stability properties of LQ-feedback were generalized and some partial solutions were provided to the reliable stabilization and decentralized feedback coordination problems. A concept of coordination parametrization was introduced, and a scheme for classifying different modes of decentralization (information, control law computation, on-line control implementation) in control systems was developed

    Resilience-oriented control and communication framework for cyber-physical microgrids

    Climate change drives the energy supply transition from traditional fossil fuel-based power generation to renewable energy resources. This transition has been widely recognised as one of the most significant developing pathways promoting the decarbonisation process toward a zero-carbon and sustainable society. Rapidly developing renewables gradually dominate energy systems and promote the current energy supply system towards decentralisation and digitisation. The manifestation of decentralisation is at massive dispatchable energy resources, while the digitisation features strong cohesion and coherence between electrical power technologies and information and communication technologies (ICT). Massive dispatchable physical devices and cyber components are interdependent and coupled tightly as a cyber-physical energy supply system, while this cyber-physical energy supply system currently faces an increase of extreme weather (e.g., earthquake, flooding) and cyber-contingencies (e.g., cyberattacks) in the frequency, intensity, and duration. Hence, one major challenge is to find an appropriate cyber-physical solution to accommodate increasing renewables while enhancing power supply resilience. The main focus of this thesis is to blend centralised and decentralised frameworks to propose a collaboratively centralised-and-decentralised resilient control framework for energy systems i.e., networked microgrids (MGs) that can operate optimally in the normal condition while can mitigate simultaneous cyber-physical contingencies in the extreme condition. To achieve this, we investigate the concept of "cyber-physical resilience" including four phases, namely prevention/upgrade, resistance, adaption/mitigation, and recovery. Throughout these stages, we tackle different cyber-physical challenges under the concept of microgrid ranging from a centralised-to-decentralised transitional control framework coping with cyber-physical out of service, a cyber-resilient distributed control methodology for networked MGs, a UAV assisted post-contingency cyber-physical service restoration, to a fast-convergent distributed dynamic state estimation algorithm for a class of interconnected systems.Open Acces

    Distributed Model Predictive Control for Reconfigurable Large-Scale Systems

    Large-scale Systems are gaining more importance in the modern world requiring flexible techniques capable of handling interactions. This thesis is concerned with the development of suitable algorithms based on Model Predictive Control (MPC) that guarantee stability, recursive feasibility and constraint satisfaction. In the first part of this thesis, the main properties and control challenges for controlling an Large-Scale System are brought together, and the main distributed approaches for solving these problems are surveyed. Also, two novel Distributed MPC algorithms are presented. A non-centralised approach to the output-feedback variant of tube-based model predictive control of dynamically coupled linear time-invariant systems with shared constraints. A tube-based algorithm capable of handling the interactions–not rejecting them– that replaces the conventional linear disturbance rejection controller with a second MPC controller, as is done in tube-based nonlinear MPC. Following this, a smart-grids application of the developed algorithm is presented to solve the load frequency control for a power network. The approach achieves guaranteed constraint satisfaction, the recursive feasibility of the MPC problems and stability while maintaining on-line complexity similar to conventional MPC. The second part of the thesis covers reconfigurable distributed MPC. Two novel approaches are considered: a nominal MPC methodology that incorporates information of external disturbances, and a coalitional approach for robust distributed MPC. The first approach uses available disturbance predictions within a nominal model predictive control formulation is studied. The main challenge that arises is the loss of recursive feasibility and stability guarantees when a disturbance, which may change from time step to time step, is resent in the model and on the system. We show how standard stabilising terminal conditions may be modified to account for the use of disturbances in the prediction model. Robust stability and feasibility are established under the assumption that the disturbance change across sampling instances is limited. The proposed coalitional approach to robust Distributed MPC aims to tackle the existing trade-off between communication and performance in Large-Scale System by exploiting the different network topologies of system dynamics. The algorithm employs a method to switch between topologies using a multi-rate control approach. The optimal topology selection problem is solved using a consensus approach appropriately constrained to reduce the effects of any combinatorial explosion. The robust control algorithm is capable of recomputing the necessary parameters online to readjust to new partitions. Robust constraint satisfaction, recursive and stability are guaranteed by the proposed algorithm

    Heterogeneous and hybrid control with application in automotive systems

    Control systems for automotive systems have acquired a new level of complexity. To fulfill the requirements of the controller specifications new technologies are needed. In many cases high performance and robust control cannot be provided by a simple conventional controller anymore. In this case hybrid combinations of local controllers, gain scheduled controllers and global stabilisation concepts are necessary. A considerable number of state-of-the-art automotive controllers (anti-lock brake system (ABS), electronic stabilising program (ESP)) already incorporate heterogeneous and hybrid control concepts as ad-hoc solutions. In this work a heterogeneous/hybrid control system is developed for a test vehicle in order to solve a clearly specified and relevant automotive control problem. The control system will be evaluated against a state-of-the-art conventional controller to clearly show the benefits and advantages arising from the novel approach. A multiple model-based observer/estimator for the estimation of parameters is developed to reset the parameter estimate in a conventional Lyapunov based nonlinear adaptive controller. The advantage of combining both approaches is that the performance of the controller with respect to disturbances can be improved considerably because a reduced controller gain will increase the robustness of the approach with respect to noise and unmodelled dynamics. Several alternative resetting criteria are developed based on a control Lyapunov function, such that resetting guarantees a decrease in the Lyapunov function. Since ABS systems have to operate on different possibly fast changing road surfaces the application of hybrid methodologies is apparent. Four different model based wheel slip controllers will be presented: two nonlinear approaches combined with parameter resetting, a simple linear controller that has been designed using the technique of simultaneously stabilising a set of linear plants as well as a sub-optimal linear quadratic (LQ)-controller. All wheel slip controllers operate as low level controllers in a modular structure that has been developed for the ABS problem. The controllers will be applied to a real Mercedes E-class passenger car. The vehicle is equipped with a brake-by-wire system and electromechanical brake actuators. Extensive real life tests show the benefits of the hybrid approaches in a fast changing environment
