Near infrared flares of Sagittarius A*: Importance of near infrared polarimetry
We report on the results of new simulations of near-infrared (NIR)
observations of the Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) counterpart associated with the
super-massive black hole at the Galactic Center. The observations have been
carried out using the NACO adaptive optics (AO) instrument at the European
Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope and CIAO NIR camera on the Subaru
telescope (13 June 2004, 30 July 2005, 1 June 2006, 15 May 2007, 17 May 2007
and 28 May 2008). We used a model of synchrotron emission from relativistic
electrons in the inner parts of an accretion disk. The relativistic simulations
have been carried out using the Karas-Yaqoob (KY) ray-tracing code. We probe
the existence of a correlation between the modulations of the observed flux
density light curves and changes in polarimetric data. Furthermore, we confirm
that the same correlation is also predicted by the hot spot model. Correlations
between intensity and polarimetric parameters of the observed light curves as
well as a comparison of predicted and observed light curve features through a
pattern recognition algorithm result in the detection of a signature of
orbiting matter under the influence of strong gravity. This pattern is detected
statistically significant against randomly polarized red noise. Expected
results from future observations of VLT interferometry like GRAVITY experiment
are also discussed.Comment: 26 pages, 38 figures, accepted for publication by A&
Untangling Defamation Law: Guideposts for Reform
This article, which is based on a keynote address given at the 2023 Missouri Law Review Symposium, addresses the past and predicted future of defamation law in hopes of galvanizing needed reforms. As a necessary backdrop, this article explains why today’s defamation law remains so complex, tracks reforms over the last half century, and explains why the common law of defamation has not adapted adequately to the challenges posed by cheap speech in the digital era. The article then turns to assessing the complaints of defamation law’s most prominent would-be reformers and finds them to rest on an incomplete understanding of how defamation law’s complex pieces contribute to the whole. Finally, after identifying some important barriers to defamation law reform, the article provides guideposts for the reform process
On That Heart-Knotting Feeling: An Outline
The following feeling is what inspired this thesis and what this thesis aims to outline: the human heart is a knot, formed by a string, tying a human being to the divine. Simone Weil’s notion of affliction will broach the topic of the heart-knotting feeling. In the first chapter of the thesis, five qualities of affliction will be identified. In the second chapter, we will make a connection between Weilian affliction and the heart, understood by Dietrich von Hildebrand as an organ of affectivity and by the author as a transcendent souvenir. In the third chapter, we will discuss Christian biblical accounts of circumcision and circumcision of the heart. With the building blocks laid down, we will finally speak of the heart-knotting feeling in chapter four, more specifically, the formation and resolution of the heart-knotting feeling
Creating New Ventures: A review and research agenda
Creating new ventures is one of the most central topics to entrepreneurship and is a critical step from which many theories of management, organizational behavior, and strategic management build. Therefore, this review and proposed research agenda is not only relevant to entrepreneurship scholars but also other management scholars who wish to challenge some of the implicit assumptions of their current streams of research and extend the boundaries of their current theories to earlier in the organization’s life. Given that the last systematic review of the topic was published 16 years ago, and that the topic has evolved rapidly over this time, an overview and research outlook are long overdue. From our review, we inductively generated ten sub-topics: (1) Lead founder, (2) Founding team, (3) Social relationships, (4) Cognitions, (5) Emergent organizing, (6) New venture strategy, (7) Organizational emergence, (8) New venture legitimacy, (9) Founder exit, and (10) Entrepreneurial environment. These sub-topics are then organized into three major stages of the entrepreneurial process—co-creating, organizing, and performing. Together, the framework provides a cohesive story of the past and a road map for future research on creating new ventures, focusing on the links connecting these sub-topics
Come-outers and Community Men: Abraham Lincoln and the Idea of Community in Nineteenth-Century America
The most eloquent and moving words Abraham Lincoln ever uttered about any community were those few and simple words he spoke on the rear platform of the railroad car that lay waiting on the morning of February 11, 1861, to take him to Washington, to the presidency, and ultimately to his death. As his own breast heaved with emotion so that he could scarcely command his feelings sufficiently to commence (in the description of James C. Conkling), Lincoln declared that No one, not in my situation, can appreciate my feeling of sadness at this parting. To leave Springfield was to leave the only real home he had ever known. His professional life had been bound up in Springfield; he had married, raised a family, and been elected to Congress from Springfield; he had refused offers to relocate to Chicago and (so it was rumored later) even New York City to remain in Springfield. To this place, and the kindness of these people, I owe everything, Lincoln said. [excerpt
Who Takes a Dam: Regulatory Confusion and Surging Opportunities for Small Dam Removal in Rural Maine
This Comment examines the regulatory regimes surrounding the removal of state-regulated small dams in Maine by comparing the relatively underdeveloped regime in Maine with the much more coherent and robust regime in neighboring New Hampshire. When compared to more deliberate regimes, Maine’s system lacks key features, including a streamlined permitting program and a single clearinghouse for information, resources, and regulatory enforcement. Given the significant opportunities afforded by a coherent regulatory small dam removal regime, this Comment recommends that Maine follow the example of other states by creating a river restoration and dam removal program, re-establishing its statewide dam inventory, creating and enacting a strategic plan for small dam removal, and establishing a single permitting process for small dam removals across the state
