    Multi-rate data fusion for state and parameter estimation in (Bio-)chemical process engineering

    For efficient operation, modern control approaches for biochemical process engineering require information on the states of the process such as temperature, humidity or chemical composition. Those measurement are gathered from a set of sensors which differ with respect to sampling rates and measurement quality. Furthermore, for biochemical processes in particular, analysis of physical samples is necessary, e.g., to infer cellular composition resulting in delayed information. As an alternative for the use of this delayed measurement for control, so-called soft-sensor approaches can be used to fuse delayed multirate measurements with the help of a mathematical process model and provide information on the current state of the process. In this manuscript we present a complete methodology based on cascaded unscented Kalman filters for state estimation from delayed and multi-rate measurements. The approach is demonstrated for two examples, an exothermic chemical reactor and a recently developed model for biopolymer production. The results indicate that the the current state of the systems can be accurately reconstructed and therefore represent a promising tool for further application in advanced model-based control not only of the considered processes but also of related processes

    A Survey on Multisensor Fusion and Consensus Filtering for Sensor Networks

    Multisensor fusion and consensus filtering are two fascinating subjects in the research of sensor networks. In this survey, we will cover both classic results and recent advances developed in these two topics. First, we recall some important results in the development ofmultisensor fusion technology. Particularly, we pay great attention to the fusion with unknown correlations, which ubiquitously exist in most of distributed filtering problems. Next, we give a systematic review on several widely used consensus filtering approaches. Furthermore, some latest progress on multisensor fusion and consensus filtering is also presented.     Distributed estimation over a low-cost sensor network: a review of state-of-the-art

    Proliferation of low-cost, lightweight, and power efficient sensors and advances in networked systems enable the employment of multiple sensors. Distributed estimation provides a scalable and fault-robust fusion framework with a peer-to-peer communication architecture. For this reason, there seems to be a real need for a critical review of existing and, more importantly, recent advances in the domain of distributed estimation over a low-cost sensor network. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art solutions in this research area, exploring their characteristics, advantages, and challenging issues. Additionally, several open problems and future avenues of research are highlighted

    Predicting Trajectory Paths For Collision Avoidance Systems

    This work was motivated by the idea of developing a more encompassing collision avoidance system that supported vehicle to vehicle (V2V) and vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) communications. Current systems are mostly based on line of sight sensors that are used to prevent a collision, but these systems would prevent even more accidents if they could detect possible collisions before both vehicles were in line of sight. For this research we concentrated mostly on the aspect of improving the prediction of a vehicle\u27s future trajectory, particularly on non-straight paths. Having an accurate prediction of where the vehicle is heading is crucial for the system to reliably determine possible path intersections of more than one vehicle at the same time. We first evaluated the benefits of merging Global Positioning System (GPS) data with the Geographical Information System (GIS) data to correct improbable predicted positions. We then created a new algorithm called the Dead Reckoning with Dynamic Errors (DRWDE) sensor fusion, which can predict future positions at the rate of its fastest sensor, while improving the handling of accumulated error while some of the sensors are offline for a given period of time. The last part of out research consisted in the evaluation of the use of smartphones\u27 built-in sensors to predict a vehicle\u27s trajectory, as a possible intermediate solution for a vehicle to vehicle (V2V) and vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) communications, until all vehicles have all the necessary sensors and communication infrastructure to fully populate this new system. For the first part of our research, the actual experimental results validated our proposed system, which reduced the position prediction errors during curves to around half of what it would be without the use of GIS data for prediction corrections. The next improvement we worked on was the ability to handle change in noise, depending on unavailable sensor measurements, permitting a flexibility to use any type of sensor and still have the system run at the fastest frequency available. Compared to a more common KF implementation that run at the rate of its slowest sensor (1Hz in our setup), our experimental results showed that our DRWDE (running at 10Hz) yielded more accurate predictions (25-50% improvement) during abrupt changes in the heading of the vehicle. The last part of our research showed that, comparing to results obtained with the vehicle-mounted sensors, some smartphones yield similar prediction errors and can be used to predict a future position

    Vision-based particle filtering for quad-copter attitude estimation using multirate delayed measurements

    In this paper, the problem of attitude estimation of a quad-copter system equipped with a multi-rate camera and gyroscope sensors is addressed through extension of a sampling importance re-sampling (SIR) particle filter (PF). Attitude measurement sensors, such as cameras, usually suffer from a slow sampling rate and processing time delay compared to inertial sensors, such as gyroscopes. A discretized attitude kinematics in Euler angles is employed where the gyroscope noisy measurements are considered the model input, leading to a stochastic uncertain system model. Then, a multi-rate delayed PF is proposed so that when no camera measurement is available, the sampling part is performed only. In this case, the delayed camera measurements are used for weight computation and re-sampling. Finally, the efficiency of the proposed method is demonstrated through both numerical simulation and experimental work on the DJI Tello quad-copter system. The images captured by the camera are processed using the ORB feature extraction method and the homography method in Python-OpenCV, which is used to calculate the rotation matrix from the Tello’s image frames

    Design and implementation of event-based multi-rate controllers for networked control systems

    Tesis por compendio[ES] Con esta tesis se pretende dar solución a algunos de los problemas más habituales que aparecen en los Sistemas de control basados en red (NCS) como son los retardos variables en el tiempo, las pérdidas y el desorden de paquetes, y la restricción de ancho de banda y de recursos computacionales y energéticos de los dispositivos que forman parte del sistema de control. Para ello se ha planteado la integración de técnicas de control multifrecuencial, de control basado en paquetes, de control basado en predictor y de control basado en eventos. Los diseños de control realizados se han simulado utilizando Matlab-Simulink y Truetime, se ha analizado su estabilidad mediante LMIs y QFT, y se han validado experimentalmente en un péndulo invertido, un robot cartesiano 3D y en robots móviles de bajo coste. El artículo 1 aborda el control basado en eventos, el cual minimiza el ancho de banda consumido en el NCS mediante un control basado en eventos periódicos y presenta un método para obtener sus parámetros óptimos para el sistema específico en que se utilice. Los artículos 2, 4 y 6 añaden el control basado en paquetes, así como el control multifrecuencia, que aborda problemas de falta de datos por bajo uso del sensor y los retardos, pérdidas y desórdenes de paquetes en la red. También afrontan, mediante tecnicas de predicción basadas en un filtro de Kalman multifrecuencia variable en el tiempo, los problemas de ruido y perturbaciones, así como la observación de los estados completos del sistema. El artículo 7 hace frente a un modelo no lineal que utiliza las anteriores soluciones junto con un filtro de Kalman extendido para presentar otro tipo de estructura para un vehículo autónomo que, gracias a la información futura obtenida mediante estas técnicas, puede realizar de forma remota tareas de alto nivel como es la toma de decisiones y la monitorización de variables. Los artículos 3 y 5, presentan una forma de obtener y analizar la respuesta en frecuencia de sistemas SISO multifrecuencia y estudian su comportamiento ante ciertas incertidumbres o problemas en la red haciendo uso de procedimientos QFT.[CA] Amb aquesta tesi es pretén donar solució a alguns dels problemes més habituals que apareixen als Sistemes de Control Basats en xarxa (NCS) com son els retards d'accés i transferència variables en el temps, les pèrdues y desordenament de paquets, i la restricció d'ampli de banda així com de recursos computacionals i energètics dels dispositius que foment part del sistema de control. Els articles 3 y 5 presenten la manera d'obtindre i analitzar la resposta en frequencia de sistemes SISO multifreqüència i estudien el seu comportament front a certes incerteses o problemes en la xarxa fent us de procediments QFT.[EN] This thesis attempts to solve some of the most frequent issues that appear in Networked Control Systems (NCS), such as time-varying delays, packet losses and packet disorders and the bandwidth limitation. Other frequent problems are scarce computational and energy resources of the local system devices. Thus, it is proposed to integrate multirate control, packet-based control, predictor-based control and event-based control techniques. The control designs have been simulated using Matlab-Simulink and Truetime, the stability has been analysed by LMIs and QFT, and the experimental validation has been done on an inverted pendulum, a 3D cartesian robot and in low-cost mobile robots. Paper 1 addresses event-based control, which minimizes the bandwidth consumed in NCS through a periodic event-triggered control and presents a method to obtain the optimal parameters for the specific system used. Papers 2, 4 and 6 include packet-based control and multirate control, addressing problems such as network delays, packet dropouts and packet disorders, and the scarce data due to low sensor usage in order to save battery in sensing tasks and transmissions of the sensed data. Also addressed, is how despite the existence of measurement noise and disturbances, time-varying dual-rate Kalman filter based prediction techniques observe the complete state of the system. Paper 7 tackles a non-linear model that uses all the previous solutions together with an extended Kalman filter to present another type of structure for an autonomous vehicle that, due to future information obtained through these techniques, can remotely carry out high level tasks, such as decision making and monitoring of variables.     Multi-Rate Observers for Model-Based Process Monitoring

    Very often, critical quantities related to safety, product quality and economic performance of a chemical process cannot be measured on line. In an attempt to overcome the challenges caused by inadequate on-line measurements, state estimation provides an alternative approach to reconstruct the unmeasured state variables by utilizing available on-line measurements and a process model. Chemical processes usually possess strong nonlinearities, and involve different types of measurements. It remains a challenging task to incorporate multiple measurements with different sampling rates and different measurement delays into a unified estimation algorithmic framework. This dissertation seeks to present developments in the field of state estimation by providing the theoretical advances in multi-rate multi-delay observer design. A delay-free multi-rate observer is first designed in linear systems under asynchronous sampling. Sufficient and explicit conditions in terms of maximum sampling period are derived to guarantee exponential stability of the observer, using Lyapunov’s second method. A dead time compensation approach is developed to compensate for the effect of measurement delay. Based on the multi-rate formulation, optimal multi-rate observer design is studied in two classes of linear systems where optimal gain selection is performed by formulating and solving an optimization problem. Then a multi-rate observer is developed in nonlinear systems with asynchronous sampling. The input-to-output stability is established for the estimation errors with respect to measurement errors using the Karafyllis-Jiang vector small-gain theorem. Measurement delay is also accounted for in the observer design using dead time compensation. Both the multi-rate designs in linear and nonlinear systems provide robustness with respect to perturbations in the sampling schedule. Multi-rate multi-delay observer is shown to be effective for process monitoring in polymerization reactors. A series of three polycondensation reactors and an industrial gas-phase polyethylene reactor are used to evaluate the observer performance. Reliable on-line estimates are obtained from the multi-rate multi-delay observer through simulation

    Distributed estimation techniques forcyber-physical systems

    Nowadays, with the increasing use of wireless networks, embedded devices and agents with processing and sensing capabilities, the development of distributed estimation techniques has become vital to monitor important variables of the system that are not directly available. Numerous distributed estimation techniques have been proposed in the literature according to the model of the system, noises and disturbances. One of the main objectives of this thesis is to search all those works that deal with distributed estimation techniques applied to cyber-physical systems, system of systems and heterogeneous systems, through using systematic review methodology. Even though systematic reviews are not the common way to survey a topic in the control community, they provide a rigorous, robust and objective formula that should not be ignored. The presented systematic review incorporates and adapts the guidelines recommended in other disciplines to the field of automation and control and presents a brief description of the different phases that constitute a systematic review. Undertaking the systematic review many gaps were discovered: it deserves to be remarked that some estimators are not applied to cyber-physical systems, such as sliding mode observers or set-membership observers. Subsequently, one of these particular techniques was chosen, set-membership estimator, to develop new applications for cyber-physical systems. This introduces the other objectives of the thesis, i.e. to present two novel formulations of distributed set-membership estimators. Both estimators use a multi-hop decomposition, so the dynamics of the system is rewritten to present a cascaded implementation of the distributed set-membership observer, decoupling the influence of the non-observable modes to the observable ones. So each agent must find a different set for each sub-space, instead of a unique set for all the states. Two different approaches have been used to address the same problem, that is, to design a guaranteed distributed estimation method for linear full-coupled systems affected by bounded disturbances, to be implemented in a set of distributed agents that need to communicate and collaborate to achieve this goal

    An intelligent navigation system for an unmanned surface vehicle

    Merged with duplicate record 10026.1/2768 on 27.03.2017 by CS (TIS)A multi-disciplinary research project has been carried out at the University of Plymouth to design and develop an Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) named ýpringer. The work presented herein relates to formulation of a robust, reliable, accurate and adaptable navigation system to enable opringei to undertake various environmental monitoring tasks. Synergistically, sensor mathematical modelling, fuzzy logic, Multi-Sensor Data Fusion (MSDF), Multi-Model Adaptive Estimation (MMAE), fault adaptive data acquisition and an user interface system are combined to enhance the robustness and fault tolerance of the onboard navigation system. This thesis not only provides a holistic framework but also a concourse of computational techniques in the design of a fault tolerant navigation system. One of the principle novelties of this research is the use of various fuzzy logic based MSDF algorithms to provide an adaptive heading angle under various fault situations for Springer. This algorithm adapts the process noise covariance matrix ( Q) and measurement noise covariance matrix (R) in order to address one of the disadvantages of Kalman filtering. This algorithm has been implemented in Spi-inger in real time and results demonstrate excellent robustness qualities. In addition to the fuzzy logic based MSDF, a unique MMAE algorithm has been proposed in order to provide an alternative approach to enhance the fault tolerance of the heading angles for Springer. To the author's knowledge, the work presented in this thesis suggests a novel way forward in the development of autonomous navigation system design and, therefore, it is considered that the work constitutes a contribution to knowledge in this area of study.
