CSP channels for CAN-bus connected embedded control systems
Closed loop control system typically contains multitude of sensors and actuators operated simultaneously. So they are parallel and distributed in its essence. But when mapping this parallelism to software, lot of obstacles concerning multithreading communication and synchronization issues arise. To overcome this problem, the CT kernel/library based on CSP algebra has been developed. This project (TES.5410) is about developing communication extension to the CT library to make it applicable in distributed systems. Since the library is tailored for control systems, properties and requirements of control systems are taken into special consideration. Applicability of existing middleware solutions is examined. A comparison of applicable fieldbus protocols is done in order to determine most suitable ones and CAN fieldbus is chosen to be first fieldbus used. Brief overview of CSP and existing CSP based libraries is given. Middleware architecture is proposed along with few novel ideas
Evaluating Android OS for embedded real-time systems
Since its official public release, Android has captured
the interest from companies, developers and the general
audience. From that time up to now, this software platform
has been constantly improved either in terms of features or
supported hardware and, at the same time, extended to new
types of devices different from the originally intended mobile
ones. However, there is a feature that has not been explored
yet - its real-time capabilities.
This paper intends to explore this gap and provide a basis
for discussion on the suitability of Android in order to be used
in Open Real-Time environments. By analysing the software
platform, with the main focus on the virtual machine and its
underlying operating system environments, we are able to point
out its current limitations and, therefore, provide a hint on
different perspectives of directions in order to make Android
suitable for these environments.
It is our position that Android may provide a suitable
architecture for real-time embedded systems, but the real-time
community should address its limitations in a joint effort at
all of the platform layers
A Methodology for Transforming Java Applications Towards Real-Time Performance
The development of real-time systems has traditionally been based on low-level programming languages, such as C and C++, as these provide a fine-grained control of the applications temporal behavior. However, the usage of such programming languages suffers from increased complexity and high error rates compared to high-level languages such as Java. The Java programming language provides many benefits to software development such as automatic memory management and platform independence. However, Java is unable to provide any real-time guarantees, as the high-level benefits come at the cost of unpredictable temporal behavior.This thesis investigates the temporal characteristics of the Java language and analyses several possibilities for introducing real-time guarantees, including official language extensions and commercial runtime environments. Based on this analysis a new methodology is proposed for Transforming Java Applications towards Real-time Performance (TJARP). This method motivates a clear definition of timing requirements, followed by an analysis of the system through use of the formal modeling languageVDM-RT. Finally, the method provides a set of structured guidelines to facilitate the choice of strategy for obtaining real-time performance using Java. To further support this choice, an analysis is presented of available solutions, supported by a simple case study and a series of benchmarks.Furthermore, this thesis applies the TJARP method to a complex industrialcase study provided by a leading supplier of mission critical systems. Thecase study proves how the TJARP method is able to analyze an existing and complex system, and successfully introduce hard real-time guaranteesin critical sub-components
Ada (trademark) projects at NASA. Runtime environment issues and recommendations
Ada practitioners should use this document to discuss and establish common short term requirements for Ada runtime environments. The major current Ada runtime environment issues are identified through the analysis of some of the Ada efforts at NASA and other research centers. The runtime environment characteristics of major compilers are compared while alternate runtime implementations are reviewed. Modifications and extensions to the Ada Language Reference Manual to address some of these runtime issues are proposed. Three classes of projects focusing on the most critical runtime features of Ada are recommended, including a range of immediately feasible full scale Ada development projects. Also, a list of runtime features and procurement issues is proposed for consideration by the vendors, contractors and the government
Unwoven Aspect Analysis
Various languages and tools supporting advanced separation of concerns (such as aspect-oriented programming) provide a software developer with the ability to separate functional and non-functional programmatic intentions. Once these separate pieces of the software have been speciïŹed, the tools automatically handle interaction points between separate modules, relieving the developer of this chore and permitting more understandable, maintainable code. Many approaches have left traditional compiler analysis and optimization until after the composition has been performed; unfortunately, analyses performed after composition cannot make use of the logical separation present in the original program. Further, for modular systems that can be conïŹgured with diïŹerent sets of features, testing under every possible combination of features may be necessary and time-consuming to avoid bugs in production software. To solve this testing problem, we investigate a feature-aware compiler analysis that runs during composition and discovers features strongly independent of each other. When the their independence can be judged, the number of feature combinations that must be separately tested can be reduced. We develop this approach and discuss our implementation. We look forward to future programming languages in two ways: we implement solutions to problems that are conceptually aspect-oriented but for which current aspect languages and tools fail. We study these cases and consider what language designs might provide even more information to a compiler. We describe some features that such a future language might have, based on our observations of current language deïŹciencies and our experience with compilers for these languages
Effective memory management for mobile environments
Smartphones, tablets, and other mobile devices exhibit vastly different constraints compared to regular or classic computing environments like desktops, laptops, or servers. Mobile devices run dozens of so-called âappsâ hosted by independent virtual machines (VM). All these VMs run concurrently and each VM deploys purely local heuristics to organize resources like memory, performance, and power. Such a design causes conflicts across all layers of the software stack, calling for the evaluation of VMs and the optimization techniques specific for mobile frameworks.
In this dissertation, we study the design of managed runtime systems for mobile platforms. More specifically, we deepen the understanding of interactions between garbage collection (GC) and system layers. We develop tools to monitor the memory behavior of Android-based apps and to characterize GC performance, leading to the development of new techniques for memory management that address energy constraints, time performance, and responsiveness.
We implement a GC-aware frequency scaling governor for Android devices. We also explore the tradeoffs of power and performance in vivo for a range of realistic GC variants, with established benchmarks and real applications running on Android virtual machines. We control for variation due to dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS), Just-in-time (JIT) compilation, and across established dimensions of heap memory size and concurrency. Finally, we provision GC as a global service that collects statistics from all running VMs and then makes an informed decision that optimizes across all them (and not just locally), and across all layers of the stack.
Our evaluation illustrates the power of such a central coordination service and garbage collection mechanism in improving memory utilization, throughput, and adaptability to user activities. In fact, our techniques aim at a sweet spot, where total on-chip energy is reduced (20â30%) with minimal impact on throughput and responsiveness (5â10%). The simplicity and efficacy of our approach reaches well beyond the usual optimization techniques
A Complex Mechatronic System: from Design to Application
Progress in mobile robotics requires the researchers to access and improve all modules that compose the robot, from low-level mechanical components to high-level reasoning systems. This paper presents the development process of the robots built at the Autonomous Systems Lab, EPFL Lausanne, Switzerland. Starting from the mechanical and electrical design up to the application, we show the challenges that needed to be faced as well as the solutions that have been devised. The description covers aspects like the operating system and framework, because of its role in the overall safety and dependability of the whole software system, the research as a precondition for innovative products, and the man-machine interface, which is indispensable for conveying information to the user as well as allowing the user to interact with the robot. The issues that have been faced stem from the hierarchical, layered construction of a complex mechatronic product, where the operation of the machine depends on the smooth cooperation of each layer; In the same way, the overall safety is undermined by the least reliable piece building the system

Optimizing scoped and immortal memory management in real-time java
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.The Real-Time Specification for Java (RTSJ) introduces a new memory management model which avoids interfering with the garbage collection process and achieves better deterministic behaviour. In addition to the heap memory, two types of memory areas are provided - immortal and scoped. The research presented in this Thesis aims to optimize the use of the scoped and immortal memory model in RTSJ applications. Firstly, it provides an empirical study of the impact of scoped memory on execution time and memory consumption with different data objects allocated in scoped memory areas. It highlights different characteristics for the scoped memory model related to one of the RTSJ implementations (SUN RTS 2.2). Secondly, a new RTSJ case study which integrates scoped and immortal memory techniques to apply different memory models is presented. A simulation tool for a real-time Java application is developed which is the first in the literature that shows scoped memory and immortal memory consumption of an RTSJ application over a period of time. The simulation tool helps developers to choose the most appropriate scoped memory model by monitoring memory consumption and application execution time. The simulation demonstrates that a developer is able to compare and choose the most appropriate scoped memory design model that achieves the least memory footprint. Results showed that the memory design model with a higher number of scopes achieved the least memory footprint. However, the number of scopes per se does not always indicate a satisfactory memory footprint; choosing the right objects/threads to be allocated into scopes is an important factor to be considered. Recommendations and guidelines for developing RTSJ applications which use a scoped memory model are also provided. Finally, monitoring scoped and immortal memory at runtime may help in catching possible memory leaks. The case study with the simulation tool developed showed a space overhead incurred by immortal memory. In this research, dynamic code slicing is also employed as a debugging technique to explore constant increases in immortal memory. Two programming design patterns are presented for decreasing immortal memory overheads generated by specific data structures. Experimental results showed a significant decrease in immortal memory consumption at runtime
