    Optimizing Source and Sensor Placement for Sound Field Control: An Overview

    International audienceIn order to control an acoustic field inside a target region, it is important to choose suitable positions of secondary sources (loudspeakers) and sensors (control points/microphones). This paper provides an overview of state-of-the-art source and sensor placement methods in sound field control. Although the placement of both sources and sensors greatly affects control accuracy and filter stability, their joint optimization has not been thoroughly investigated in the acoustics literature. In this context, we reformulate five general source and/or sensor placement methods that can be applied for sound field control. We compare the performance of these methods through extensive numerical simulations in both narrowband and broadband scenarios.     The Quiet Supersonic Flights 2018 (QSF18) Program was designed to develop tools and methods for demonstration of overland supersonic flight with an acceptable sonic boom, and collect a large dataset of responses from a representative sample of the population. Phase 1 provided the basis for a low amplitude sonic boom testing in six different climate regions that will enable international regulatory agencies to draft a noise-based standard for certifying civilian supersonic overland flight. Phase 2 successfully executed a large scale test in Galveston, Texas, developed well documented data sets, calculated dose response relationships, yielded lessons, and identified future risk reduction activities

A democracy-enhancing Internet requires Public Service Media becoming Public Service Internet platforms – an Internet of the public, by the public, and for the public; an Internet that advances instead of threatens democracy and the public sphere. The Public Service Internet is based on Internet platforms operated by a variety of Public Service Media, taking the public service remit into the digital age. The Public Service Internet provides opportunities for public debate, participation, and the advancement of social cohesion.     This open access book presents established methods of structural health monitoring (SHM) and discusses their technological merit in the current aerospace environment. While the aerospace industry aims for weight reduction to improve fuel efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and to decrease maintenance time and operating costs, aircraft structures are often designed and built heavier than required in order to accommodate unpredictable failure. A way to overcome this approach is the use of SHM systems to detect the presence of defects. This book covers all major contemporary aerospace-relevant SHM methods, from the basics of each method to the various defect types that SHM is required to detect to discussion of signal processing developments alongside considerations of aerospace safety requirements. It will be of interest to professionals in industry and academic researchers alike, as well as engineering students.     Load Estimation, Structural Identification and Human Comfort Assessment of Flexible Structures

    Stadiums, pedestrian bridges, dance floors, and concert halls are distinct from other civil engineering structures due to several challenges in their design and dynamic behavior. These challenges originate from the flexible inherent nature of these structures coupled with human interactions in the form of loading. The investigations in past literature on this topic clearly state that the design of flexible structures can be improved with better load modeling strategies acquired with reliable load quantification, a deeper understanding of structural response, generation of simple and efficient human-structure interaction models and new measurement and assessment criteria for acceptable vibration levels. In contribution to these possible improvements, this dissertation taps into three specific areas: the load quantification of lively individuals or crowds, the structural identification under non-stationary and narrowband disturbances and the measurement of excessive vibration levels for human comfort. For load quantification, a computer vision based approach capable of tracking both individual and crowd motion is used. For structural identification, a noise-assisted Multivariate Empirical Mode Decomposition (MEMD) algorithm is incorporated into the operational modal analysis. The measurement of excessive vibration levels and the assessment of human comfort are accomplished through computer vision based human and object tracking, which provides a more convenient means for measurement and computation. All the proposed methods are tested in the laboratory environment utilizing a grandstand simulator and in the field on a pedestrian bridge and on a football stadium. Findings and interpretations from the experimental results are presented. The dissertation is concluded by highlighting the critical findings and the possible future work that may be conducted

    DETERMINING HEAD POSITION TO ASSIST ELECTRIC-POWERED WHEELCHAIR OPERATION FOR PERSONS WITH TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY

    Monitoring head position in persons with a traumatic brain injury may provide a means for independent powered mobility. Given the often limited residual functions of attending, visual processing, and motor control, the operation of an electric-powered wheelchair must be constantly monitored to ensure the safety of these users. Human-directed support is not always available and does not encourage independent mobility. The solution proposed for this problem is placement of a magnet on the rear of the person's head. Strategically placed linear analog Hall effect sensors that are fixed in a stationary headrest can then track the magnet; thus, accurately determining head positioning. With this proposed head tracking, a specialized interface to the electric-powered wheelchair controller can be used to ensure the person's head is attending the direction of travel asserted by a conventional, direction-sensing joystick

    Sensor-based Nonlinear and Nonstationary Dynaimc Analysis of Online Structural Health Monitoring

    This dissertation focuses on robust online Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) framework for civil engineering structures. The proposed framework improves the diagnostic and prognostic schemes for damage-state awareness and structural life prediction in civil engineering structures. The underlying research achieves three main objectives, namely, (1) sensor placement optimization using partial differential equation modeling and Fisher information matrix, (2) structural damage detection using quasi-recursive correlation dimension (QRCD), and (3) structural damage prediction using online empirical mode decomposition (EMD).The research methodology includes three research tasks: Firstly, to formulate the optimal criteria for the sensor placement optimization damage detection problem based upon a partial differential equation (PDE) analytical model. The PDE model is derived and then validated through experimental results using correlation analysis. Secondly, to develop a novel quasi-recursive correlation dimension method for structural damage detection. The QRCD algorithm is integrated with an attractor analysis and overlapping windowing technique. Thirdly, to design an online structural damage prediction method based on empirical mode decomposition. The proposed SHM prediction scheme consists of two steps: prediction based change point detection using Hilbert instantaneous phase, and damage severity prediction using the energy index of the most representative intrinsic mode function (IMF).Study results show that; (1) the proposed optimal sensor placement method leads to an optimal spatial location for a collection of sensors, which are sensitive to structural damage, (2) the proposed damage detection algorithm can significantly alleviate the complexity of computation for correlation dimension to approximate O(N), making the online monitoring of nonlinear/nonstationary processes more applicable and efficient; and (3) the proposed empirical mode decomposition method for online damage prediction overcomes the boundary effects of the sifting process, and it has significant prediction accuracy improvement (greater than 30%) over other commonly used prediction techniques.Industrial Engineering & Managemen

    Structural Health Monitoring in Composite Structures: A Comprehensive Review.

    This study presents a comprehensive review of the history of research and development of different damage-detection methods in the realm of composite structures. Different fields of engineering, such as mechanical, architectural, civil, and aerospace engineering, benefit excellent mechanical properties of composite materials. Due to their heterogeneous nature, composite materials can suffer from several complex nonlinear damage modes, including impact damage, delamination, matrix crack, fiber breakage, and voids. Therefore, early damage detection of composite structures can help avoid catastrophic events and tragic consequences, such as airplane crashes, further demanding the development of robust structural health monitoring (SHM) algorithms. This study first reviews different non-destructive damage testing techniques, then investigates vibration-based damage-detection methods along with their respective pros and cons, and concludes with a thorough discussion of a nonlinear hybrid method termed the Vibro-Acoustic Modulation technique. Advanced signal processing, machine learning, and deep learning have been widely employed for solving damage-detection problems of composite structures. Therefore, all of these methods have been fully studied. Considering the wide use of a new generation of smart composites in different applications, a section is dedicated to these materials. At the end of this paper, some final remarks and suggestions for future work are presented
