    Fine-grained Subjectivity and Sentiment Analysis: Recognizing the intensity, polarity, and attitudes of private states

    Private states (mental and emotional states) are part of the information that is conveyed in many forms of discourse. News articles often report emotional responses to news stories; editorials, reviews, and weblogs convey opinions and beliefs. This dissertation investigates the manual and automatic identification of linguistic expressions of private states in a corpus of news documents from the world press. A term for the linguistic expression of private states is subjectivity.The conceptual representation of private states used in this dissertation is that of Wiebe et al. (2005). As part of this research, annotators are trained to identify expressions of private states and their properties, such as the source and the intensity of the private state. This dissertation then extends the conceptual representation of private states to better model the attitudes and targets of private states. The inter-annotator agreement studies conducted for this dissertation show that the various concepts in the original and extended representation of private states can be reliably annotated.Exploring the automatic recognition of various types of private states is also a large part of this dissertation. Experiments are conducted that focus on three types of fine-grained subjectivity analysis: recognizing the intensity of clauses and sentences, recognizing the contextual polarity of words and phrases, and recognizing the attribution levels where sentiment and arguing attitudes are expressed. Various supervised machine learning algorithms are used to train automatic systems to perform each of these tasks. These experiments result in automatic systems for performing fine-grained subjectivity analysis that significantly outperform baseline systems

    Emotion-aware voice interfaces based on speech signal processing

    Voice interfaces (VIs) will become increasingly widespread in current daily lives as AI techniques progress. VIs can be incorporated into smart devices like smartphones, as well as integrated into autos, home automation systems, computer operating systems, and home appliances, among other things. Current speech interfaces, however, are unaware of users’ emotional states and hence cannot support real communication. To overcome these limitations, it is necessary to implement emotional awareness in future VIs. This thesis focuses on how speech signal processing (SSP) and speech emotion recognition (SER) can enable VIs to gain emotional awareness. Following an explanation of what emotion is and how neural networks are implemented, this thesis presents the results of several user studies and surveys. Emotions are complicated, and they are typically characterized using category and dimensional models. They can be expressed verbally or nonverbally. Although existing voice interfaces are unaware of users’ emotional states and cannot support natural conversations, it is possible to perceive users’ emotions by speech based on SSP in future VIs. One section of this thesis, based on SSP, investigates mental restorative eïŹ€ects on humans and their measures from speech signals. SSP is less intrusive and more accessible than traditional measures such as attention scales or response tests, and it can provide a reliable assessment for attention and mental restoration. SSP can be implemented into future VIs and utilized in future HCI user research. The thesis then moves on to present a novel attention neural network based on sparse correlation features. The detection accuracy of emotions in the continuous speech was demonstrated in a user study utilizing recordings from a real classroom. In this section, a promising result will be shown. In SER research, it is unknown if existing emotion detection methods detect acted emotions or the genuine emotion of the speaker. Another section of this thesis is concerned with humans’ ability to act on their emotions. In a user study, participants were instructed to imitate five fundamental emotions. The results revealed that they struggled with this task; nevertheless, certain emotions were easier to replicate than others. A further study concern is how VIs should respond to users’ emotions if SER techniques are implemented in VIs and can recognize users’ emotions. The thesis includes research on ways for dealing with the emotions of users. In a user study, users were instructed to make sad, angry, and terrified VI avatars happy and were asked if they would like to be treated the same way if the situation were reversed. According to the results, the majority of participants tended to respond to these unpleasant emotions with neutral emotion, but there is a diïŹ€erence among genders in emotion selection. For a human-centered design approach, it is important to understand what the users’ preferences for future VIs are. In three distinct cultures, a questionnaire-based survey on users’ attitudes and preferences for emotion-aware VIs was conducted. It was discovered that there are almost no gender diïŹ€erences. Cluster analysis found that there are three fundamental user types that exist in all cultures: Enthusiasts, Pragmatists, and Sceptics. As a result, future VI development should consider diverse sorts of consumers. In conclusion, future VIs systems should be designed for various sorts of users as well as be able to detect the users’ disguised or actual emotions using SER and SSP technologies. Furthermore, many other applications, such as restorative eïŹ€ects assessments, can be included in the VIs system

    IberSPEECH 2020: XI Jornadas en TecnologĂ­a del Habla and VII Iberian SLTech

    IberSPEECH2020 is a two-day event, bringing together the best researchers and practitioners in speech and language technologies in Iberian languages to promote interaction and discussion. The organizing committee has planned a wide variety of scientific and social activities, including technical paper presentations, keynote lectures, presentation of projects, laboratories activities, recent PhD thesis, discussion panels, a round table, and awards to the best thesis and papers. The program of IberSPEECH2020 includes a total of 32 contributions that will be presented distributed among 5 oral sessions, a PhD session, and a projects session. To ensure the quality of all the contributions, each submitted paper was reviewed by three members of the scientific review committee. All the papers in the conference will be accessible through the International Speech Communication Association (ISCA) Online Archive. Paper selection was based on the scores and comments provided by the scientific review committee, which includes 73 researchers from different institutions (mainly from Spain and Portugal, but also from France, Germany, Brazil, Iran, Greece, Hungary, Czech Republic, Ucrania, Slovenia). Furthermore, it is confirmed to publish an extension of selected papers as a special issue of the Journal of Applied Sciences, “IberSPEECH 2020: Speech and Language Technologies for Iberian Languages”, published by MDPI with fully open access.     Predicting Text Quality: Metrics for Content, Organization and Reader Interest

    When people read articles---news, fiction or technical---most of the time if not always, they form perceptions about its quality. Some articles are well-written and others are poorly written. This thesis explores if such judgements can be automated so that they can be incorporated into applications such as information retrieval and automatic summarization. Text quality does not involve a single aspect but is a combination of numerous and diverse criteria including spelling, grammar, organization, informative nature, creative and beautiful language use, and page layout. In the education domain, comprehensive lists of such properties are outlined in the rubrics used for assessing writing. But computational methods for text quality have addressed only a handful of these aspects, mainly related to spelling, grammar and organization. In addition, some text quality aspects could be more relevant for one genre versus another. But previous work have placed little focus on specialized metrics based on the genre of texts. This thesis proposes new insights and techniques to address the above issues. We introduce metrics that score varied dimensions of quality such as content, organization and reader interest. For content, we present two measures: specificity and verbosity level. Specificity measures the amount of detail present in a text while verbosity captures which details are essential to include. We measure organization quality by quantifying the regularity of the intentional structure in the article and also using the specificity levels of adjacent sentences in the text. Our reader interest metrics aim to identify engaging and interesting articles. The development of these measures is backed by the use of articles from three different genres: academic writing, science journalism and automatically generated summaries. Proper presentation of content is critical during summarization because summaries have a word limit. Our specificity and verbosity metrics are developed with this genre as the focus. The argumentation structure of academic writing lends support to the idea of using intentional structure to model organization quality. Science journalism articles convey research findings in an engaging manner and are ideally suited for the development and evaluation of measures related to reader interest

    Brown clustering, an unsupervised hierarchical clustering technique based on ngram mutual information, has proven useful in many NLP applications. However, most uses of Brown clustering employ the same default configuration; the appropriateness of this configuration has gone predominantly unexplored. Accordingly, we present information for practitioners on the behaviour of Brown clustering in order to assist hyper-parametre tuning, in the form of a theoretical model of Brown clustering utility. This model is then evaluated empirically in two sequence labelling tasks over two text types. We explore the dynamic between the input corpus size, chosen number of classes, and quality of the resulting clusters, which has an impact for any approach using Brown clustering. In every scenario that we examine, our results reveal that the values most commonly used for the clustering are sub-optimal

    Lors d'une intervention conversationnelle, le langage est supportĂ© par une communication non-verbale qui joue un rĂŽle central dans le comportement social humain en permettant de la rĂ©troaction et en gĂ©rant la synchronisation, appuyant ainsi le contenu et la signification du discours. En effet, 55% du message est vĂ©hiculĂ© par les expressions faciales, alors que seulement 7% est dĂ» au message linguistique et 38% au paralangage. L'information concernant l'Ă©tat Ă©motionnel d'une personne est gĂ©nĂ©ralement infĂ©rĂ©e par les attributs faciaux. Cependant, on ne dispose pas vraiment d'instruments de mesure spĂ©cifiquement dĂ©diĂ©s Ă  ce type de comportements. En vision par ordinateur, on s'intĂ©resse davantage au dĂ©veloppement de systĂšmes d'analyse automatique des expressions faciales prototypiques pour les applications d'interaction homme-machine, d'analyse de vidĂ©os de rĂ©unions, de sĂ©curitĂ©, et mĂȘme pour des applications cliniques. Dans la prĂ©sente recherche, pour apprĂ©hender de tels indicateurs observables, nous essayons d'implanter un systĂšme capable de construire une source consistante et relativement exhaustive d'informations visuelles, lequel sera capable de distinguer sur un visage les traits et leurs dĂ©formations, permettant ainsi de reconnaĂźtre la prĂ©sence ou absence d'une action faciale particuliĂšre. Une rĂ©flexion sur les techniques recensĂ©es nous a amenĂ© Ă  explorer deux diffĂ©rentes approches. La premiĂšre concerne l'aspect apparence dans lequel on se sert de l'orientation des gradients pour dĂ©gager une reprĂ©sentation dense des attributs faciaux. Hormis la reprĂ©sentation faciale, la principale difficultĂ© d'un systĂšme, qui se veut ĂȘtre gĂ©nĂ©ral, est la mise en Ɠuvre d'un modĂšle gĂ©nĂ©rique indĂ©pendamment de l'identitĂ© de la personne, de la gĂ©omĂ©trie et de la taille des visages. La dĂ©marche qu'on propose repose sur l'Ă©laboration d'un rĂ©fĂ©rentiel prototypique Ă  partir d'un recalage par SIFT-flow dont on dĂ©montre, dans cette thĂšse, la supĂ©rioritĂ© par rapport Ă  un alignement conventionnel utilisant la position des yeux. Dans une deuxiĂšme approche, on fait appel Ă  un modĂšle gĂ©omĂ©trique Ă  travers lequel les primitives faciales sont reprĂ©sentĂ©es par un filtrage de Gabor. Dans cette thĂšse, on propose une redĂ©finition de la mesure de confiance et introduisons une procĂ©dure itĂ©rative et conditionnelle d'estimation du dĂ©placement qui offrent un suivi plus robuste que les mĂ©thodes originales.In a face-to-face talk, language is supported by nonverbal communication, which plays a central role in human social behavior by adding cues to the meaning of speech, providing feedback, and managing synchronization. Information about the emotional state of a person is usually carried out by facial attributes. In fact, 55% of a message is communicated by facial expressions whereas only 7% is due to linguistic language and 38% to paralanguage. However, there are currently no established instruments to measure such behavior. The computer vision community is therefore interested in the development of automated techniques for prototypic facial expression analysis, for human computer interaction applications, meeting video analysis, security and clinical applications. For gathering observable cues, we try to design, in this research, a framework that can build a relatively comprehensive source of visual information, which will be able to distinguish the facial deformations, thus allowing to point out the presence or absence of a particular facial action. A detailed review of identified techniques led us to explore two different approaches. The first approach involves appearance modeling, in which we use the gradient orientations to generate a dense representation of facial attributes. Besides the facial representation problem, the main difficulty of a system, which is intended to be general, is the implementation of a generic model independent of individual identity, face geometry and size. We therefore introduce a concept of prototypic referential mapping through a SIFT-flow registration that demonstrates, in this thesis, its superiority to the conventional eyes-based alignment. In a second approach, we use a geometric model through which the facial primitives are represented by Gabor filtering. Motivated by the fact that facial expressions are not only ambiguous and inconsistent across human but also dependent on the behavioral context; in this approach, we present a personalized facial expression recognition system whose overall performance is directly related to the localization performance of a set of facial fiducial points. These points are tracked through a sequence of video frames by a modification of a fast Gabor phase-based disparity estimation technique. In this thesis, we revisit the confidence measure, and introduce an iterative conditional procedure for displacement estimation that improves the robustness of the original methods

    Turn-Taking in Human Communicative Interaction

    The core use of language is in face-to-face conversation. This is characterized by rapid turn-taking. This turn-taking poses a number central puzzles for the psychology of language. Consider, for example, that in large corpora the gap between turns is on the order of 100 to 300 ms, but the latencies involved in language production require minimally between 600ms (for a single word) or 1500 ms (for as simple sentence). This implies that participants in conversation are predicting the ends of the incoming turn and preparing in advance. But how is this done? What aspects of this prediction are done when? What happens when the prediction is wrong? What stops participants coming in too early? If the system is running on prediction, why is there consistently a mode of 100 to 300 ms in response time? The timing puzzle raises further puzzles: it seems that comprehension must run parallel with the preparation for production, but it has been presumed that there are strict cognitive limitations on more than one central process running at a time. How is this bottleneck overcome? Far from being 'easy' as some psychologists have suggested, conversation may be one of the most demanding cognitive tasks in our everyday lives. Further questions naturally arise: how do children learn to master this demanding task, and what is the developmental trajectory in this domain? Research shows that aspects of turn-taking such as its timing are remarkably stable across languages and cultures, but the word order of languages varies enormously. How then does prediction of the incoming turn work when the verb (often the informational nugget in a clause) is at the end? Conversely, how can production work fast enough in languages that have the verb at the beginning, thereby requiring early planning of the whole clause? What happens when one changes modality, as in sign languages -- with the loss of channel constraints is turn-taking much freer? And what about face-to-face communication amongst hearing individuals -- do gestures, gaze, and other body behaviors facilitate turn-taking? One can also ask the phylogenetic question: how did such a system evolve? There seem to be parallels (analogies) in duetting bird species, and in a variety of monkey species, but there is little evidence of anything like this among the great apes. All this constitutes a neglected set of problems at the heart of the psychology of language and of the language sciences. This research topic welcomes contributions from right across the board, for example from psycholinguists, developmental psychologists, students of dialogue and conversation analysis, linguists interested in the use of language, phoneticians, corpus analysts and comparative ethologists or psychologists. We welcome contributions of all sorts, for example original research papers, opinion pieces, and reviews of work in subfields that may not be fully understood in other subfields
