    Ethical challenges in the use of IoT in education: on the path to personalization

    In the research on the ethical challenges related to the Internet of Things (IoT) and the personalisation of the learning process, four key categories have been identified: Security, Privacy, Automation, and Interaction. Based on this framework, using Constructivist Grounded Theory (CGT), we’ve conducted a study with twenty one actors in the field which have reflected on the advantages, risks and challenges, creating and developing theoretical solutions from technological, pedagogical, and ethical-philosophical perspectives. Coupled with the challenge of interoperability on IoT highways, the educational process generates disadvantages associated with access, use, monitoring and ownership of data, as well as standardization that falls under “profiling” rather than personalization. This leads to problems like exclusion, redundancy of the human being in education through its homogenization and determinism that leads to a loss of sense of freedom, control and choice. The consequence is surveillance associated with corporativism and the loss of the notion of the Common Good in general and in the education in particular. In this paper we discuss how IoT, algorithms and Artificial Intelligence (AI) linked to automation falls within the profiling; and whether more artisanal solutions linked to human language, communication and the relationship that enhance collaboration among multitudes, lead to a stigmeric learning enhancing a personalization of proximity. In this way we are invited to think of a symbiosis between the human being and the machine without the threat of its control, but with the openness and access in education as advantages, the expansion of interaction and communication enhanced by automated processes in pursuit of personalization, distinguishing the cost from the value of data, the value of collective data from the value of personal data among other challenges.     IoT-based students interaction framework using attention-scoring assessment in eLearning

    Students’ interaction and collaboration using Internet of Things (IoT) based interoperable infrastructure is a convenient way. Measuring student attention is an essential part of educational assessment. As new learning styles develop, new tools and assessment methods are also needed. The focus of this paper is to develop IoT-based interaction framework and analysis of the student experience of electronic learning (eLearning). The learning behaviors of students attending remote video lectures are assessed by logging their behavior and analyzing the resulting multimedia data using machine learning algorithms. An attention-scoring algorithm, its workflow, and the mathematical formulation for the smart assessment of the student learning experience are established. This setup has a data collection module, which can be reproduced by implementing the algorithm in any modern programming language. Some faces, eyes, and status of eyes are extracted from video stream taken from a webcam using this module. The extracted information is saved in a dataset for further analysis. The analysis of the dataset produces interesting results for student learning assessments. Modern learning management systems can integrate the developed tool to take student learning behaviors into account when assessing electronic learning strategies

    Internet of Things Affordance for Open Educational Resources in a Comprehensive Open Distance E-learning

    The Internet of Things (IoT) space has dual dimensions of affordance to support open educational resources (OER). The duality of affordance has little or not been well articulated in relation to OER, particularly in a Comprehensive open distance e-learning (CODEL) institution. Such an institution is a mega open distance in South Africa and beyond the continent to accommodate students globally and rely on information and communication technology (ICT) in the provision of tuition. In the CODEL institution, there is a recognizable shift as the institution encourages the appropriation of OER and phasing out the prescription of the prescribed textbooks. The research opted for the qualitative approach to establish the role and the causality of IoT affordance in the appropriation of OER. The technology affordance theory has been used as the main theoretical underpinning for this study. The study found that the CODEL institution is IoT driven when handling OER. Furthermore, IoT affordance for OER suggests two propositions as a contribution: CODEL requires to articulate and realignment of its business enterprise system with IoT-driven infrastructure to accommodate tuition using OER; and the IoT-driven context needs to seek possible solutions to adopt artificial intelligence practices for the advancement of OER. In a recommendation for future research, there is a need to investigate the appropriation of OER through IoT affordance in all South African higher education institutions including the contact or traditional universities
