Issues in the design of switched linear systems : a benchmark study

    Get PDF
In this paper we present a tutorial overview of some of the issues that arise in the design of switched linear control systems. Particular emphasis is given to issues relating to stability and control system realisation. A benchmark regulation problem is then presented. This problem is most naturally solved by means of a switched control design. The challenge to the community is to design a control system that meets the required performance specifications and permits the application of rigorous analysis techniques. A simple design solution is presented and the limitations of currently available analysis techniques are illustrated with reference to this example

A review of convex approaches for control, observation and safety of linear parameter varying and Takagi-Sugeno systems

    Get PDF
This paper provides a review about the concept of convex systems based on Takagi-Sugeno, linear parameter varying (LPV) and quasi-LPV modeling. These paradigms are capable of hiding the nonlinearities by means of an equivalent description which uses a set of linear models interpolated by appropriately defined weighing functions. Convex systems have become very popular since they allow applying extended linear techniques based on linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) to complex nonlinear systems. This survey aims at providing the reader with a significant overview of the existing LMI-based techniques for convex systems in the fields of control, observation and safety. Firstly, a detailed review of stability, feedback, tracking and model predictive control (MPC) convex controllers is considered. Secondly, the problem of state estimation is addressed through the design of proportional, proportional-integral, unknown input and descriptor observers. Finally, safety of convex systems is discussed by describing popular techniques for fault diagnosis and fault tolerant control (FTC).Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Constructions of Strict Lyapunov Functions for Discrete Time and Hybrid Time-Varying Systems

    Get PDF
We provide explicit closed form expressions for strict Lyapunov functions for time-varying discrete time systems. Our Lyapunov functions are expressed in terms of known nonstrict Lyapunov functions for the dynamics and finite sums of persistency of excitation parameters. This provides a discrete time analog of our previous continuous time Lyapunov function constructions. We also construct explicit strict Lyapunov functions for systems satisfying nonstrict discrete time analogs of the conditions from Matrosov's Theorem. We use our methods to build strict Lyapunov functions for time-varying hybrid systems that contain mixtures of continuous and discrete time evolutions.Comment: 14 pages. A characterization of switched linear control systems with finite L 2 -gain

    Get PDF
Motivated by an open problem posed by J.P. Hespanha, we extend the notion of Barabanov norm and extremal trajectory to classes of switching signals that are not closed under concatenation. We use these tools to prove that the finiteness of the L2-gain is equivalent, for a large set of switched linear control systems, to the condition that the generalized spectral radius associated with any minimal realization of the original switched system is smaller than one

Switched-capacitor neural networks for linear programming

    Get PDF
A circuit for online solving of linear programming problems is presented. The circuit uses switched-capacitor techniques and is thus suitable for monolithic implementation. The connection of the proposed circuit to analogue neural networks is also outlined.Comisión Interministerial de Ciencia y Tecnología ME87-000
