    Assessment of the energy efficiency estimation methods on induction motors considering real-time monitoring

    Different methods have been developed to estimate the energy efficiency of induction motors. The accuracy of these methods vary with the load factor, the unbalanced voltage (UV) and harmonics. The feasibility of these methods for efficiency estimation in real-time were theoretically and experimentally assessed during the operation under different operational conditions (i.e. balanced sinusoidal voltage (BSV), harmonics, UV and harmonics with UV). Results show that for load factors over 80%, the air-gap method is applicable under any condition, while the slip method is only applicable under BSV or balanced harmonic voltage. Moreover, for load factors over 40%, the nameplate method is applicable under BSV. Other methods result in errors over 8% and optimization methods are not applicable for real-time monitoring. Electric systems generally operates with some degree of UV and harmonics, while induction motors mostly operate with load factors below 60%, limiting the use of these methods for real-time measurement

    Computationally Efficient Optimization of a Five-Phase Flux-Switching PM Machine Under Different Operating Conditions

    This paper investigates the comparative design optimizations of a five-phase outer-rotor flux-switching permanent magnet (FSPM) machine for in-wheel traction applications. To improve the comprehensive performance of the motor, two kinds of large-scale design optimizations under different operating conditions are performed and compared, including the traditional optimization performed at the rated operating point and the optimization targeting the whole driving cycles. Three driving cycles are taken into account, namely, the urban dynamometer driving schedule (UDDS), the highway fuel economy driving schedule (HWFET), and the combined UDDS/HWFET, representing the city, highway, and combined city/highway driving, respectively. Meanwhile, the computationally efficient finite-element analysis (CE-FEA) method, the cyclic representative operating points extraction technique, as well as the response surface methodology (in order to minimize the number of experiments when establishing the inverse machine model), are presented to reduce the computational effort and cost. From the results and discussion, it will be found that the optimization results against different operating conditions exhibit distinct characteristics in terms of geometry, efficiency, and energy loss distributions. For the traditional optimization performed at the rated operating point, the optimal design tends to reduce copper losses but suffer from high core losses; for UDDS, the optimal design tends to minimize both copper losses and PM eddy-current losses in the low-speed region; for HWFET, the optimal design tends to minimize core losses in the high-speed region; for the combined UDDS/HWFET, the optimal design tends to balance/compromise the loss components in both the low-speed and high-speed regions. Furthermore, the advantages of the adopted optimization methodologies versus the traditional procedure are highlighted

    Parameter estimation of electric power transformers using Coyote Optimization Algorithm with experimental verification

    In this work, the Coyote Optimization Algorithm (COA) is implemented for estimating the parameters of single and three-phase power transformers. The estimation process is employed on the basis of the manufacturer's operation reports. The COA is assessed with the aid of the deviation between the actual and the estimated parameters as the main objective function. Further, the COA is compared with well-known optimization algorithms i.e. particle swarm and Jaya optimization algorithms. Moreover, experimental verifications are carried out on 4 kVA, 380/380 V, three-phase transformer and 1 kVA, 230/230 V, single-phase transformer. The obtained results prove the effectiveness and capability of the proposed COA. According to the obtained results, COA has the ability and stability to identify the accurate optimal parameters in case of both single phase and three phase transformers; thus accurate performance of the transformers is achieved. The estimated parameters using COA lead to the highest closeness to the experimental measured parameters that realizes the best agreements between the estimated parameters and the actual parameters compared with other optimization algorithms

    Role of optimization algorithms based fuzzy controller in achieving induction motor performance enhancement.

    Three-phase induction motors (TIMs) are widely used for machines in industrial operations. As an accurate and robust controller, fuzzy logic controller (FLC) is crucial in designing TIMs control systems. The performance of FLC highly depends on the membership function (MF) variables, which are evaluated by heuristic approaches, leading to a high processing time. To address these issues, optimisation algorithms for TIMs have received increasing interest among researchers and industrialists. Here, we present an advanced and efficient quantum-inspired lightning search algorithm (QLSA) to avoid exhaustive conventional heuristic procedures when obtaining MFs. The accuracy of the QLSA based FLC (QLSAF) speed control is superior to other controllers in terms of transient response, damping capability and minimisation of statistical errors under diverse speeds and loads. The performance of the proposed QLSAF speed controller is validated through experiments. Test results under different conditions show consistent speed responses and stator currents with the simulation results

    Solar array fed synchronous reluctance motor driven water pump : an improved performance under partial shading conditions

    An improved performance of a photovoltaic (PV) pumping system employing a synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM) under partial shading conditions is proposed. The system does not include the dc-dc converter that is predominantly being utilized for maximizing the output power of the PV array. In addition, storage batteries are also not contained. A conventional inverter connected directly to the PV array is used to drive the SynRM. Further, a control strategy is proposed to drive the inverter so that the maximum output power of the PV array is achieved while the SynRM is working at the maximum torque per Ampere condition. Consequently, this results in an improved system efficiency and cost. Moreover, two maximum power point tracking (MPPT) techniques are compared under uniform and partial shadow irradiation conditions. The first MPPT algorithm is based on the conventional perturbation and observation (P&O) method and the second one uses a differential evolution (DE) optimization technique. It is found that the DE optimization method leads to a higher PV output power than using the P&O method under the partial shadow condition. Hence, the pump flow rate is much higher. However, under a uniform irradiation level, the PV system provides the available maximum power using both MPPT techniques. The experimental measurements are obtained to validate the theoretical work

    The Effect of Motor Parameters on the Induction Motor Speed Sensorless Control System using Luenberger Observer

    The sensorless control system is a control system without a controlled variable sensor.  The controlled variable is estimated using an observer. In this investigation, the sensorless control system is used to control induction motor speed.  The observer that is used is the Luenberger observer.  One of the drawbacks of the sensorless control system is precision motor parameter values. In this research, the effect of induction motor parameters in a speed sensorless control system, i.e. resistance and inductance motor, will be investigated.  The differences in induction motor parameters between the controller and the actual value affect the system response. The value differences of Rr and Rs that can be applied are a maximum of 50%. However, the small differences in the inductance value greatly affect the system response. To get a good response, the value differences of Ls and Lr are between -5% to +5%, while the difference in the value of Lm is between -3% to +3%
