    Joint models for information and knowledge extraction

    Information and knowledge extraction from natural language text is a key asset for question answering, semantic search, automatic summarization, and other machine reading applications. There are many sub-tasks involved such as named entity recognition, named entity disambiguation, co-reference resolution, relation extraction, event detection, discourse parsing, and others. Solving these tasks is challenging as natural language text is unstructured, noisy, and ambiguous. Key challenges, which focus on identifying and linking named entities, as well as discovering relations between them, include: • High NERD Quality. Named entity recognition and disambiguation, NERD for short, are preformed first in the extraction pipeline. Their results may affect other downstream tasks. • Coverage vs. Quality of Relation Extraction. Model-based information extraction methods achieve high extraction quality at low coverage, whereas open information extraction methods capture relational phrases between entities. However, the latter degrades in quality by non-canonicalized and noisy output. These limitations need to be overcome. • On-the-fly Knowledge Acquisition. Real-world applications such as question answering, monitoring content streams, etc. demand on-the-fly knowledge acquisition. Building such an end-to-end system is challenging because it requires high throughput, high extraction quality, and high coverage. This dissertation addresses the above challenges, developing new methods to advance the state of the art. The first contribution is a robust model for joint inference between entity recognition and disambiguation. The second contribution is a novel model for relation extraction and entity disambiguation on Wikipediastyle text. The third contribution is an end-to-end system for constructing querydriven, on-the-fly knowledge bases.Informations- und Wissensextraktion aus natürlichsprachlichen Texten sind Schlüsselthemen vieler wissensbassierter Anwendungen. Darunter fallen zum Beispiel Frage-Antwort-Systeme, semantische Suchmaschinen, oder Applikationen zur automatischen Zusammenfassung und zum maschinellem Lesen von Texten. Zur Lösung dieser Aufgaben müssen u.a. Teilaufgaben, wie die Erkennung und Disambiguierung benannter Entitäten, Koreferenzresolution, Relationsextraktion, Ereigniserkennung, oder Diskursparsen, durchgeführt werden. Solche Aufgaben stellen eine Herausforderung dar, da Texte natürlicher Sprache in der Regel unstrukturiert, verrauscht und mehrdeutig sind. Folgende zentrale Herausforderungen adressieren sowohl die Identifizierung und das Verknüpfen benannter Entitäten als auch das Erkennen von Beziehungen zwischen diesen Entitäten: • Hohe NERD Qualität. Die Erkennung und Disambiguierung benannter Entitäten (engl. "Named Entity Recognition and Disambiguation", kurz "NERD") wird in Extraktionspipelines in der Regel zuerst ausgeführt. Die Ergebnisse beeinflussen andere nachgelagerte Aufgaben. • Abdeckung und Qualität der Relationsextraktion. Modellbasierte Informationsextraktionsmethoden erzielen eine hohe Extraktionsqualität, bei allerdings niedriger Abdeckung. Offene Informationsextraktionsmethoden erfassen relationale Phrasen zwischen Entitäten. Allerdings leiden diese Methoden an niedriger Qualität durch mehrdeutige Entitäten und verrauschte Ausgaben. Diese Einschränkungen müssen überwunden werden. • On-the-Fly Wissensakquisition. Reale Anwendungen wie Frage-Antwort- Systeme, die Überwachung von Inhaltsströmen usw. erfordern On-the-Fly Wissensakquise. Die Entwicklung solcher ganzheitlichen Systeme stellt eine hohe Herausforderung dar, da ein hoher Durchsatz, eine hohe Extraktionsqualität sowie eine hohe Abdeckung erforderlich sind. Diese Arbeit adressiert diese Probleme und stellt neue Methoden vor, um den aktuellen Stand der Forschung zu erweitern. Diese sind: • Ein robustesModell zur integrierten Inferenz zur gemeinschaftlichen Erkennung und Disambiguierung von Entitäten. • Ein neues Modell zur Relationsextraktion und Disambiguierung von Wikipedia-ähnlichen Texten. • Ein ganzheitliches System zur Erstellung Anfrage-getriebener On-the-Fly Wissensbanken

    Semantic Spaces for Video Analysis of Behaviour

    PhDThere are ever growing interests from the computer vision community into human behaviour analysis based on visual sensors. These interests generally include: (1) behaviour recognition - given a video clip or specific spatio-temporal volume of interest discriminate it into one or more of a set of pre-defined categories; (2) behaviour retrieval - given a video or textual description as query, search for video clips with related behaviour; (3) behaviour summarisation - given a number of video clips, summarise out representative and distinct behaviours. Although countless efforts have been dedicated into problems mentioned above, few works have attempted to analyse human behaviours in a semantic space. In this thesis, we define semantic spaces as a collection of high-dimensional Euclidean space in which semantic meaningful events, e.g. individual word, phrase and visual event, can be represented as vectors or distributions which are referred to as semantic representations. With the semantic space, semantic texts, visual events can be quantitatively compared by inner product, distance and divergence. The introduction of semantic spaces can bring lots of benefits for visual analysis. For example, discovering semantic representations for visual data can facilitate semantic meaningful video summarisation, retrieval and anomaly detection. Semantic space can also seamlessly bridge categories and datasets which are conventionally treated independent. This has encouraged the sharing of data and knowledge across categories and even datasets to improve recognition performance and reduce labelling effort. Moreover, semantic space has the ability to generalise learned model beyond known classes which is usually referred to as zero-shot learning. Nevertheless, discovering such a semantic space is non-trivial due to (1) semantic space is hard to define manually. Humans always have a good sense of specifying the semantic relatedness between visual and textual instances. But a measurable and finite semantic space can be difficult to construct with limited manual supervision. As a result, constructing semantic space from data is adopted to learn in an unsupervised manner; (2) It is hard to build a universal semantic space, i.e. this space is always contextual dependent. So it is important to build semantic space upon selected data such that it is always meaningful within the context. Even with a well constructed semantic space, challenges are still present including; (3) how to represent visual instances in the semantic space; and (4) how to mitigate the misalignment of visual feature and semantic spaces across categories and even datasets when knowledge/data are generalised. This thesis tackles the above challenges by exploiting data from different sources and building contextual semantic space with which data and knowledge can be transferred and shared to facilitate the general video behaviour analysis. To demonstrate the efficacy of semantic space for behaviour analysis, we focus on studying real world problems including surveillance behaviour analysis, zero-shot human action recognition and zero-shot crowd behaviour recognition with techniques specifically tailored for the nature of each problem. Firstly, for video surveillances scenes, we propose to discover semantic representations from the visual data in an unsupervised manner. This is due to the largely availability of unlabelled visual data in surveillance systems. By representing visual instances in the semantic space, data and annotations can be generalised to new events and even new surveillance scenes. Specifically, to detect abnormal events this thesis studies a geometrical alignment between semantic representation of events across scenes. Semantic actions can be thus transferred to new scenes and abnormal events can be detected in an unsupervised way. To model multiple surveillance scenes simultaneously, we show how to learn a shared semantic representation across a group of semantic related scenes through a multi-layer clustering of scenes. With multi-scene modelling we show how to improve surveillance tasks including scene activity profiling/understanding, crossscene query-by-example, behaviour classification, and video summarisation. Secondly, to avoid extremely costly and ambiguous video annotating, we investigate how to generalise recognition models learned from known categories to novel ones, which is often termed as zero-shot learning. To exploit the limited human supervision, e.g. category names, we construct the semantic space via a word-vector representation trained on large textual corpus in an unsupervised manner. Representation of visual instance in semantic space is obtained by learning a visual-to-semantic mapping. We notice that blindly applying the mapping learned from known categories to novel categories can cause bias and deteriorating the performance which is termed as domain shift. To solve this problem we employed techniques including semisupervised learning, self-training, hubness correction, multi-task learning and domain adaptation. All these methods in combine achieve state-of-the-art performance in zero-shot human action task. In the last, we study the possibility to re-use known and manually labelled semantic crowd attributes to recognise rare and unknown crowd behaviours. This task is termed as zero-shot crowd behaviours recognition. Crucially we point out that given the multi-labelled nature of semantic crowd attributes, zero-shot recognition can be improved by exploiting the co-occurrence between attributes. To summarise, this thesis studies methods for analysing video behaviours and demonstrates that exploring semantic spaces for video analysis is advantageous and more importantly enables multi-scene analysis and zero-shot learning beyond conventional learning strategies

    Gaze-Based Human-Robot Interaction by the Brunswick Model

    We present a new paradigm for human-robot interaction based on social signal processing, and in particular on the Brunswick model. Originally, the Brunswick model copes with face-to-face dyadic interaction, assuming that the interactants are communicating through a continuous exchange of non verbal social signals, in addition to the spoken messages. Social signals have to be interpreted, thanks to a proper recognition phase that considers visual and audio information. The Brunswick model allows to quantitatively evaluate the quality of the interaction using statistical tools which measure how effective is the recognition phase. In this paper we cast this theory when one of the interactants is a robot; in this case, the recognition phase performed by the robot and the human have to be revised w.r.t. the original model. The model is applied to Berrick, a recent open-source low-cost robotic head platform, where the gazing is the social signal to be considered

    Deep Neural Networks and Data for Automated Driving

    This open access book brings together the latest developments from industry and research on automated driving and artificial intelligence. Environment perception for highly automated driving heavily employs deep neural networks, facing many challenges. How much data do we need for training and testing? How to use synthetic data to save labeling costs for training? How do we increase robustness and decrease memory usage? For inevitably poor conditions: How do we know that the network is uncertain about its decisions? Can we understand a bit more about what actually happens inside neural networks?     The concept underlying the Engineering Data Compendium was the product of a research and development program (Integrated Perceptual Information for Designers project) aimed at facilitating the application of basic research findings in human performance to the design of military crew systems. The principal objective was to develop a workable strategy for: (1) identifying and distilling information of potential value to system design from existing research literature, and (2) presenting this technical information in a way that would aid its accessibility, interpretability, and applicability by system designers. The present four volumes of the Engineering Data Compendium represent the first implementation of this strategy. This is Volume 3, containing sections on Human Language Processing, Operator Motion Control, Effects of Environmental Stressors, Display Interfaces, and Control Interfaces (Real/Virtual)

    Smoking and Second Hand Smoking in Adolescents with Chronic Kidney Disease: A Report from the Chronic Kidney Disease in Children (CKiD) Cohort Study

    The goal of this study was to determine the prevalence of smoking and second hand smoking [SHS] in adolescents with CKD and their relationship to baseline parameters at enrollment in the CKiD, observational cohort study of 600 children (aged 1-16 yrs) with Schwartz estimated GFR of 30-90 ml/min/1.73m2. 239 adolescents had self-report survey data on smoking and SHS exposure: 21 [9%] subjects had “ever” smoked a cigarette. Among them, 4 were current and 17 were former smokers. Hypertension was more prevalent in those that had “ever” smoked a cigarette (42%) compared to non-smokers (9%), p\u3c0.01. Among 218 non-smokers, 130 (59%) were male, 142 (65%) were Caucasian; 60 (28%) reported SHS exposure compared to 158 (72%) with no exposure. Non-smoker adolescents with SHS exposure were compared to those without SHS exposure. There was no racial, age, or gender differences between both groups. Baseline creatinine, diastolic hypertension, C reactive protein, lipid profile, GFR and hemoglobin were not statistically different. Significantly higher protein to creatinine ratio (0.90 vs. 0.53, p\u3c0.01) was observed in those exposed to SHS compared to those not exposed. Exposed adolescents were heavier than non-exposed adolescents (85th percentile vs. 55th percentile for BMI, p\u3c 0.01). Uncontrolled casual systolic hypertension was twice as prevalent among those exposed to SHS (16%) compared to those not exposed to SHS (7%), though the difference was not statistically significant (p= 0.07). Adjusted multivariate regression analysis [OR (95% CI)] showed that increased protein to creatinine ratio [1.34 (1.03, 1.75)] and higher BMI [1.14 (1.02, 1.29)] were independently associated with exposure to SHS among non-smoker adolescents. These results reveal that among adolescents with CKD, cigarette use is low and SHS is highly prevalent. The association of smoking with hypertension and SHS with increased proteinuria suggests a possible role of these factors in CKD progression and cardiovascular outcomes

    [Resumen] Este artículo presenta el primer robot manipulador aéreo con dos brazos antropomórficos diseñado para aplicarse en tareas de inspección y mantenimiento en entornos industriales de difícil acceso para operarios humanos. El robot consiste en una plataforma aérea multirrotor equipada con dos brazos antropomórficos ultraligeros, así como el sistema de control integrado de la plataforma y los brazos. Una de las principales características del manipulador es la flexibilidad mecánica proporcionada en todas las articulaciones, lo que aumenta la seguridad en las interacciones físicas con el entorno y la protección del propio robot. Para ello se ha introducido un compacto y simple mecanismo de transmisión por muelle entre el eje del servo y el enlace de salida. La estructura en aluminio de los brazos ha sido cuidadosamente diseñada de forma que los actuadores estén aislados frente a cargas radiales y axiales que los puedan dañar.
