    Scheduling algorithms for input-queued switches with virtual output queueing

    A set of packet scheduling algorithms are proposed for improving the performance of Iterative Longest Port First (iLPF) algorithm in [1] for Virtual Output Queueing Switch. In our proposed algorithms, scheduling priority is given according to different criteria that include input port occupancy, output port occupancy and critical port in VOQ. One of our proposed algorithm, called Longest Input Port First with Throughput Maximization (LIPF with TM), gives significant performance improvement in mean packet delay and throughput when compared with iLPF. We found that for a 16 × 16 switch with input load p = 0.85, the mean packet delay is 7.08 slots for iLPF and 3.21 slots for LIPF with TM. This represents a 55% cut in mean packet delay.published_or_final_versio

    Output-queued switching, though is able to offer high throughput, guaranteed delay and fairness, lacks scalability owing to the speed up problem. Input-queued switching, on the other hand, is scalable, and is thus becoming an attractive alternative. This dissertation presents three approaches toward resolving the major problem encountered in input-queued switching that has prohibited the provision of quality of service guarantees. First, we proposed a maximum size matching based algorithm, referred to as min-max fair input queueing (MFIQ), which minimizes the additional delay caused by back pressure, and at the same time provides fair service among competing sessions. Like any maximum size matching algorithm, MFIQ performs well for uniform traffic, in which the destinations of the incoming cells are uniformly distributed over all the outputs, but is not stable for non-uniform traffic. Subse-quently, we proposed two maximum weight matching based algorithms, longest normalized queue first (LNQF) and earliest due date first matching (EDDFM), which are stable for both uniform and non-uniform traffic. LNQF provides fairer service than longest queue first (LQF) and better traffic shaping than oldest cell first (OCF), and EDDEM has lower probability of delay overdue than LQF, LNQF, and OCF. Our third approach, referred to as store-sort-and-forward (SSF), is a frame based scheduling algorithm. SSF is proved to be able to achieve strict sense 100% throughput, and provide bounded delay and delay jitter for input-queued switches if the traffic conforms to the (r, T) model

    Fabric-on-a-Chip: Toward Consolidating Packet Switching Functions on Silicon

    The switching capacity of an Internet router is often dictated by the memory bandwidth required to bu¤er arriving packets. With the demand for greater capacity and improved service provisioning, inherent memory bandwidth limitations are encountered rendering input queued (IQ) switches and combined input and output queued (CIOQ) architectures more practical. Output-queued (OQ) switches, on the other hand, offer several highly desirable performance characteristics, including minimal average packet delay, controllable Quality of Service (QoS) provisioning and work-conservation under any admissible traffic conditions. However, the memory bandwidth requirements of such systems is O(NR), where N denotes the number of ports and R the data rate of each port. Clearly, for high port densities and data rates, this constraint dramatically limits the scalability of the switch. In an effort to retain the desirable attributes of output-queued switches, while significantly reducing the memory bandwidth requirements, distributed shared memory architectures, such as the parallel shared memory (PSM) switch/router, have recently received much attention. The principle advantage of the PSM architecture is derived from the use of slow-running memory units operating in parallel to distribute the memory bandwidth requirement. At the core of the PSM architecture is a memory management algorithm that determines, for each arriving packet, the memory unit in which it will be placed. However, to date, the computational complexity of this algorithm is O(N), thereby limiting the scalability of PSM switches. In an effort to overcome the scalability limitations, it is the goal of this dissertation to extend existing shared-memory architecture results while introducing the notion of Fabric on a Chip (FoC). In taking advantage of recent advancements in integrated circuit technologies, FoC aims to facilitate the consolidation of as many packet switching functions as possible on a single chip. Accordingly, this dissertation introduces a novel pipelined memory management algorithm, which plays a key role in the context of on-chip output- queued switch emulation. We discuss in detail the fundamental properties of the proposed scheme, along with hardware-based implementation results that illustrate its scalability and performance attributes. To complement the main effort and further support the notion of FoC, we provide performance analysis of output queued cell switches with heterogeneous traffic. The result is a flexible tool for obtaining bounds on the memory requirements in output queued switches under a wide range of tra¢ c scenarios. Additionally, we present a reconfigurable high-speed hardware architecture for real-time generation of packets for the various traffic scenarios.     For the next-generation packet switched communications satellite system with onboard processing and spot-beam operation, a reliable onboard fast packet switch is essential to route packets from different uplink beams to different downlink beams. The rapid emergence of point-to-point services such as video distribution, and the large demand for video conference, distributed data processing, and network management makes the multicast function essential to a fast packet switch (FPS). The satellite's inherent broadcast features gives the satellite network an advantage over the terrestrial network in providing multicast services. This report evaluates alternate multicast FPS architectures for onboard baseband switching applications and selects a candidate for subsequent breadboard development. Architecture evaluation and selection will be based on the study performed in phase 1, 'Onboard B-ISDN Fast Packet Switching Architectures', and other switch architectures which have become commercially available as large scale integration (LSI) devices

    Ethernet Networks for Real-Time Use in the ATLAS Experiment

    Ethernet became today's de-facto standard technology for local area networks. Defined by the IEEE 802.3 and 802.1 working groups, the Ethernet standards cover technologies deployed at the first two layers of the OSI protocol stack. The architecture of modern Ethernet networks is based on switches. The switches are devices usually built using a store-and-forward concept. At the highest level, they can be seen as a collection of queues and mathematically modelled by means of queuing theory. However, the traffic profiles on modern Ethernet networks are rather different from those assumed in classical queuing theory. The standard recommendations for evaluating the performance of network devices define the values that should be measured but do not specify a way of reconciling these values with the internal architecture of the switches. The introduction of the 10 Gigabit Ethernet standard provided a direct gateway from the LAN to the WAN by the means of the WAN PHY. Certain aspects related to the actual use of WAN PHY technology were vaguely defined by the standard. The ATLAS experiment at CERN is scheduled to start operation at CERN in 2007. The communication infrastructure of the Trigger and Data Acquisition System will be built using Ethernet networks. The real-time operational needs impose a requirement for predictable performance on the network part. In view of the diversity of the architectures of Ethernet devices, testing and modelling is required in order to make sure the full system will operate predictably. This thesis focuses on the testing part of the problem and addresses issues in determining the performance for both LAN and WAN connections. The problem of reconciling results from measurements to architectural details of the switches will also be tackled. We developed a scalable traffic generator system based on commercial-off-the-shelf Gigabit Ethernet network interface cards. The generator was able to transmit traffic at the nominal Gigabit Ethernet line rate for all frame sizes specified in the Ethernet standard. The calculation of latency was performed with accuracy in the range of +/- 200 ns. We indicate how certain features of switch architectures may be identified through accurate throughput and latency values measured for specific traffic distributions. At this stage, we present a detailed analysis of Ethernet broadcast support in modern switches. We use a similar hands-on approach to address the problem of extending Ethernet networks over long distances. Based on the 1 Gbit/s traffic generator used in the LAN, we develop a methodology to characterise point-to-point connections over long distance networks. At higher speeds, a combination of commercial traffic generators and high-end servers is employed to determine the performance of the connection. We demonstrate that the new 10 Gigabit Ethernet technology can interoperate with the installed base of SONET/SDH equipment through a series of experiments on point-to-point circuits deployed over long-distance network infrastructure in a multi-operator domain. In this process, we provide a holistic view of the end-to-end performance of 10 Gigabit Ethernet WAN PHY connections through a sequence of measurements starting at the physical transmission layer and continuing up to the transport layer of the OSI protocol stack

    Performance analysis of networks on chips

    Modules on a chip (such as processors and memories) are traditionally connected through a single link, called a bus. As chips become more complex and the number of modules on a chip increases, this connection method becomes inefficient because the bus can only be used by one module at a time. Networks on chips are an emerging technology for the connection of on-chip modules. In networks on chips, switches are used to transmit data from one module to another, which entails that multiple links can be used simultaneously so that communication is more efficient. Switches consist of a number of input ports to which data arrives and output ports from which data leaves. If data at multiple input ports has to be transmitted to the same output port, only one input port may actually transmit its data, which may lead to congestion. Queueing theory deals with the analysis of congestion phenomena caused by competition for service facilities with scarce resources. Such phenomena occur, for example, in traffic intersections, manufacturing systems, and communication networks like networks on chips. These congestion phenomena are typically analysed using stochastic models, which capture the uncertain and unpredictable nature of processes leading to congestion (such as irregular car arrivals to a traffic intersection). Stochastic models are useful tools for the analysis of networks on chips as well, due to the complexity of data traffic on these networks. In this thesis, we therefore study queueing models aimed at networks on chips. The thesis is centred around two key models: A model of a switch in isolation, the so-called single-switch model, and a model of a network of switches where all traffic has the same destination, the so-called network of polling stations. For both models we are interested in the throughput (the amount of data transmitted per time unit) and the mean delay (the time it takes data to travel across the network). Single-switch models are often studied under the assumption that the number of ports tends to infinity and that traffic is uniform (i.e., on average equally many packets arrive to all buffers, and all possible destinations are equally likely). In networks on chips, however, the number of buffers is typically small. We introduce a new approximation specifically aimed at small switches with (memoryless) Bernoulli arrivals. We show that, for such switches, this approximation is more accurate than currently known approximations. As traffic in networks on chips is usually non-uniform, we also extend our approximation to non-uniform switches. The key difference between uniform and nonuniform switches is that in non-uniform switches, all queues have a different maximum throughput. We obtain a very accurate approximation of this throughput, which allows us to extend the mean delay approximation. The extended approximation is derived for Bernoulli arrivals and correlated arrival processes. Its accuracy is verified through a comparison with simulation results. The second key model is that of concentrating tree networks of polling stations (polling stations are essentially switches where all traffic has the same output port as destination). Single polling stations have been studied extensively in literature, but only few attempts have been made to analyse networks of polling stations. We establish a reduction theorem that states that networks of polling stations can be reduced to single polling stations while preserving some information on mean waiting times. This reduction theorem holds under the assumption that the last node of the network uses a so-called HoL-based service discipline, which means that the choice to transmit data from a certain buffer may only depend on which buffers are empty, but not on the amount of data in the buffers. The reduction theorem is a key tool for the analysis of networks of polling stations. In addition to this, mean waiting times in single polling stations have to be calculated, either exactly or approximately. To this end, known results can be used, but we also devise a new single-station approximation that can be used for a large subclass of HoL-based service disciplines. Finally, networks on chips typically implement flow control, which is a mechanism that limits the amount of data in the network from one source. We analyse the division of throughput over several sources in a network of polling stations with flow control. Our results indicate that the throughput in such a network is determined by an interaction between buffer sizes, flow control limits, and service disciplines. This interaction is studied in more detail by means of a numerical analysis
