Building Continents of Knowledge in Oceans of Data: The Future of Co-Created eHealth
We report on the development and evaluation of a prototype tool aimed to assist laymen/patients in understanding the content of clinical narratives. The tool relies largely on unsupervised machine learning applied to two large corpora of unlabeled text – a clinical corpus and a general domain corpus. A joint semantic word-space model is created for the purpose of extracting easier to understand alternatives for words considered difficult to understand by laymen. Two domain experts evaluate the tool and inter-rater agreement is calculated. When having the tool suggest ten alternatives to each difficult word, it suggests acceptable lay words for 55.51% of them. This and future manual evaluation will serve to further improve performance, where also supervised machine learning will be used.</p

Computational Approaches to Assisting Patients\u27 Medical Comprehension from Electronic Health Records
Patient-centered care has been established as a fundamental approach to improve the quality of health care in a seminal report by the Institute of Medicine published at the start of the century. Improved access to health information and demand for greater transparency contributed to its move into the mainstream. Research has also demonstrated that actively involving patients in the management of their own health can lead to better outcomes, and potentially lower costs. However, despite the efforts in many areas of medicine to embrace patient-centered care, engaging patients is still considered a challenge. One of the barriers is the lack of effective tools to help patients understand their health conditions, options and their consequences.
Patient portals are now widely adopted by hospitals and other healthcare practices to provide patients with the capabilities to view their own Electronic Health Records. They are a rich resource of information for patients. However, the language in the records are generally difficult for patients without training in medicine to understand. Furthermore, the amount of information can often be overwhelming as well. In this work, we propose computational approaches to foster patient engagement from three aspects by exploiting the rich information in the medical records.
First, we design a framework to automatically generate health literacy instruments to measure a patient\u27s literacy levels. This framework exploits readily available large scale corpora to generate instruments in a commonly used test format. Second, we investigate methods that can determine the readability of complex documents such as health records. We propose to rank document readability, instead of assigning a grade level or a pre-defined difficulty category. Lastly, we examine the problem of finding targeted educational materials to facilitate patient comprehension of medical notes. We study methods to formulate effective queries from specialized and long clinical narratives. In addition, we propose a neural network based method to identify medical concepts that are important to patients.
The three aspects of this work address the issues of the overabundance and technical complexity of medical language in health records. We demonstrate that our approaches are effective with various experiments and evaluation metric
Front-Line Physicians' Satisfaction with Information Systems in Hospitals
Day-to-day operations management in hospital units is difficult due to continuously varying situations, several actors involved and a vast number of information systems in use. The aim of this study was to describe front-line physicians' satisfaction with existing information systems needed to support the day-to-day operations management in hospitals. A cross-sectional survey was used and data chosen with stratified random sampling were collected in nine hospitals. Data were analyzed with descriptive and inferential statistical methods. The response rate was 65 % (n = 111). The physicians reported that information systems support their decision making to some extent, but they do not improve access to information nor are they tailored for physicians. The respondents also reported that they need to use several information systems to support decision making and that they would prefer one information system to access important information. Improved information access would better support physicians' decision making and has the potential to improve the quality of decisions and speed up the decision making process.Peer reviewe
A Comprehensive Survey of Natural Language Generation Advances from the Perspective of Digital Deception
In recent years there has been substantial growth in the capabilities of systems designed to generate text that mimics the fluency and coherence of human language. From this, there has been considerable research aimed at examining the potential uses of these natural language generators (NLG) towards a wide number of tasks. The increasing capabilities of powerful text generators to mimic human writing convincingly raises the potential for deception and other forms of dangerous misuse. As these systems improve, and it becomes ever harder to distinguish between human-written and machine-generated text, malicious actors could leverage these powerful NLG systems to a wide variety of ends, including the creation of fake news and misinformation, the generation of fake online product reviews, or via chatbots as means of convincing users to divulge private information. In this paper, we provide an overview of the NLG field via the identification and examination of 119 survey-like papers focused on NLG research. From these identified papers, we outline a proposed high-level taxonomy of the central concepts that constitute NLG, including the methods used to develop generalised NLG systems, the means by which these systems are evaluated, and the popular NLG tasks and subtasks that exist. In turn, we provide an overview and discussion of each of these items with respect to current research and offer an examination of the potential roles of NLG in deception and detection systems to counteract these threats. Moreover, we discuss the broader challenges of NLG, including the risks of bias that are often exhibited by existing text generation systems. This work offers a broad overview of the field of NLG with respect to its potential for misuse, aiming to provide a high-level understanding of this rapidly developing area of research

CLARIN, the "Common Language Resources and Technology Infrastructure", has established itself as a major player in the field of research infrastructures for the humanities. This volume provides a comprehensive overview of the organization, its members, its goals and its functioning, as well as of the tools and resources hosted by the infrastructure. The many contributors representing various fields, from computer science to law to psychology, analyse a wide range of topics, such as the technology behind the CLARIN infrastructure, the use of CLARIN resources in diverse research projects, the achievements of selected national CLARIN consortia, and the challenges that CLARIN has faced and will face in the future.

A Student Primer on Intersectionality: Not Just A Buzzword
This book:

We designed this book to illustrate that intersectionality is a powerful tool for learning about and addressing injustice and inequity. When we analyze the world using an intersectionality framework, we learn about people’s lives and experiences in ways that we may never have considered, or wanted to consider. And the mere act of examining multiple systems of oppression is not enough, either, as the point of understanding oppression is to end it in all forms. As you read, be thankful for the discomfort, anger, and compassion that may arise; learning about oppression is never easy, but it is a worthwhile and meaningful task
