    Energy performance forecasting of residential buildings using fuzzy approaches

    The energy consumption used for domestic purposes in Europe is, to a considerable extent, due to heating and cooling. This energy is produced mostly by burning fossil fuels, which has a high negative environmental impact. The characteristics of a building are an important factor to determine the necessities of heating and cooling loads. Therefore, the study of the relevant characteristics of the buildings, regarding the heating and cooling needed to maintain comfortable indoor air conditions, could be very useful in order to design and construct energy-efficient buildings. In previous studies, different machine-learning approaches have been used to predict heating and cooling loads from the set of variables: relative compactness, surface area, wall area, roof area, overall height, orientation, glazing area and glazing area distribution. However, none of these methods are based on fuzzy logic. In this research, we study two fuzzy logic approaches, i.e., fuzzy inductive reasoning (FIR) and adaptive neuro fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), to deal with the same problem. Fuzzy approaches obtain very good results, outperforming all the methods described in previous studies except one. In this work, we also study the feature selection process of FIR methodology as a pre-processing tool to select the more relevant variables before the use of any predictive modelling methodology. It is proven that FIR feature selection provides interesting insights into the main building variables causally related to heating and cooling loads. This allows better decision making and design strategies, since accurate cooling and heating load estimations and correct identification of parameters that affect building energy demands are of high importance to optimize building designs and equipment specifications.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    Data-driven Soft Sensors in the Process Industry

    In the last two decades Soft Sensors established themselves as a valuable alternative to the traditional means for the acquisition of critical process variables, process monitoring and other tasks which are related to process control. This paper discusses characteristics of the process industry data which are critical for the development of data-driven Soft Sensors. These characteristics are common to a large number of process industry fields, like the chemical industry, bioprocess industry, steel industry, etc. The focus of this work is put on the data-driven Soft Sensors because of their growing popularity, already demonstrated usefulness and huge, though yet not completely realised, potential. A comprehensive selection of case studies covering the three most important Soft Sensor application fields, a general introduction to the most popular Soft Sensor modelling techniques as well as a discussion of some open issues in the Soft Sensor development and maintenance and their possible solutions are the main contributions of this work

    Forecasting bus passenger flows by using a clustering-based support vector regression approach

    As a significant component of the intelligent transportation system, forecasting bus passenger flows plays a key role in resource allocation, network planning, and frequency setting. However, it remains challenging to recognize high fluctuations, nonlinearity, and periodicity of bus passenger flows due to varied destinations and departure times. For this reason, a novel forecasting model named as affinity propagation-based support vector regression (AP-SVR) is proposed based on clustering and nonlinear simulation. For the addressed approach, a clustering algorithm is first used to generate clustering-based intervals. A support vector regression (SVR) is then exploited to forecast the passenger flow for each cluster, with the use of particle swarm optimization (PSO) for obtaining the optimized parameters. Finally, the prediction results of the SVR are rearranged by chronological order rearrangement. The proposed model is tested using real bus passenger data from a bus line over four months. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed model performs better than other peer models in terms of absolute percentage error and mean absolute percentage error. It is recommended that the deterministic clustering technique with stable cluster results (AP) can improve the forecasting performance significantly.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Thermal error modelling of machine tools based on ANFIS with fuzzy c-means clustering using a thermal imaging camera

    Thermal errors are often quoted as being the largest contributor to CNC machine tool errors, but they can be effectively reduced using error compensation. The performance of a thermal error compensation system depends on the accuracy and robustness of the thermal error model and the quality of the inputs to the model. The location of temperature measurement must provide a representative measurement of the change in temperature that will affect the machine structure. The number of sensors and their locations are not always intuitive and the time required to identify the optimal locations is often prohibitive, resulting in compromise and poor results. In this paper, a new intelligent compensation system for reducing thermal errors of machine tools using data obtained from a thermal imaging camera is introduced. Different groups of key temperature points were identified from thermal images using a novel schema based on a Grey model GM (0, N) and Fuzzy c-means (FCM) clustering method. An Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System with Fuzzy c-means clustering (FCM-ANFIS) was employed to design the thermal prediction model. In order to optimise the approach, a parametric study was carried out by changing the number of inputs and number of membership functions to the FCM-ANFIS model, and comparing the relative robustness of the designs. According to the results, the FCM-ANFIS model with four inputs and six membership functions achieves the best performance in terms of the accuracy of its predictive ability. The residual value of the model is smaller than Ā± 2 Ī¼m, which represents a 95% reduction in the thermally-induced error on the machine. Finally, the proposed method is shown to compare favourably against an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model

    Contextualized property market models vs. Generalized mass appraisals: An innovative approach

    The present research takes into account the current and widespread need for rational valuation methodologies, able to correctly interpret the available market data. An innovative automated valuation model has been simultaneously implemented to three Italian study samples, each one constituted by two-hundred residential units sold in the years 2016-2017. The ability to generate a "unique" functional form for the three different territorial contexts considered, in which the relationships between the influencing factors and the selling prices are specified by different multiplicative coefficients that appropriately represent the market phenomena of each case study analyzed, is the main contribution of the proposed methodology. The method can provide support for private operators in the assessment of the territorial investment conveniences and for the public entities in the decisional phases regarding future tax and urban planning policies

    An Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System Based Approach to Real Estate Property Assessment

    This paper describes a first effort to design and implement an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system based approach to estimate prices for residential properties. The data set consists of historic sales of homes in a market in Midwest USA and it contains parameters describing typical residential property features and the actual sale price. The study explores the use of fuzzy inference systems to assess real estate property values and the use of neural networks in creating and fine tuning the fuzzy rules used in the fuzzy inference system. The results are compared with those obtained using a traditional multiple regression model. The paper also describes possible future research in this area.
