Understanding New Emerging Technologies Through Hermeneutics. An Example from mHealth

    Get PDF
New technologies such as mHealth have entered the health domain as an innovative technology to connect people suffering from a chronic disease with healthcare services to reduce the pressure on healthcare systems. The primary driver for these technologies is data and they contain valuable information. Understanding what the data means and the accuracy of the data can be complex. Hermeneutics has been applied in previous Information Systems studies that interpret data to provide a meaning about unexplored and complex phenomenon. This paper provides background information about Hermeneutics and an example of Hermeneutics applied in a new mHealth study

AI in the newsroom: A data quality assessment framework for employing machine learning in journalistic workflows

[EN] AI-driven journalism refers to various methods and tools for gathering, verifying, producing, and distributing news information. Their potential is to extend human capabilities and create new forms of augmented journalism. Although scholars agreed on the necessity to embed journalistic values in these systems to make AI-driven systems accountable, less attention is paid to data quality, while the results' accuracy and efficiency depend on high-quality data. However, data quality remains complex to define insofar as it is a multidimensional, highly domain-dependent concept. Assessing data quality in the context of AI-driven journalism requires a broader and interdisciplinary approach, relying on the challenges of data quality in machine learning and the ethical challenges of using machine learning in journalism. These considerations ground a conceptual data quality assessment framework that aims to support the collection and pre-processing stages in machine learning. It aims to contribute to strengthening data literacy in journalism and to make a bridge between scientific disciplines that should be viewed through the lenses of their complementarity.Dierickx, L.; Lindén, C.; Opdahl, A.; Khan, S.; Guerrero Rojas, D. Information Continuity: A Temporal Approach to Assessing Metadata and Organizational Quality in an Institutional Repository

    Get PDF
This paper was presented at the 8th annual Metadata and Semantics Research Conference held in Karlsruhe, Germany, November 27-29, 2014.Repositories provide a vital infrastructure for an institution to aggregate and disseminate creative output, yet this task is only as successful as the effective organization of its content. The University of Kansas is currently undergoing a systematic review to analyze metadata and content organization in its own repository. This paper argues that for a full assessment to be achieved it is necessary to not view the repository as a fixed item, but as an entity with its own continuity. This temporal approach has a significant impact on establishing resource provenance for metadata policy adjustments, disciplinary migration, and resource extensibility. For any repository it is essential for ensuring long-term viability

Penglibatan Masyarakat Dalam Pemuliharaan Kawasan Warisan Di Pusat Bandaraya Ipoh, Perak

This research focuses on the problems of abandoned heritage sites by the community, administrators, users and building owners. To overcome these problems, two main aspects are measured to evaluate the community’s acceptance level in stirring the efforts to conserve the sites. Potential and awareness are the two aspects that become as main objective in this research. The potential aspect was measured by evaluating the community’s confidence and understanding level towards the heritage sites and how it could encourage the community to conserve these sites.

Research methods in economics and social sciences are evolving with the increasing availability of Internet and Big Data sources of information. As these sources, methods, and applications become more interdisciplinary, the 5th International Conference on Advanced Research Methods and Analytics (CARMA) is a forum for researchers and practitioners to exchange ideas and advances on how emerging research methods and sources are applied to different fields of social sciences as well as to discuss current and future challenges.Martínez Torres, MDR.; Toral Marín, S. Information Management in Supply Chain Partnering: Improving Maintenance Processes in Dutch Housing Associations

From the article: "Abstract Maintenance processes of Dutch housing associations are often still organized in a traditional manner. Contracts are based on lowest price instead of ‘best quality for lowest price’ considering users’ demands. Dutch housing associations acknowledge the need to improve their maintenance processes in order to lower maintenance cost, but are not sure how. In this research, this problem is addressed by investigating different supply chain partnering principles and the role of information management. The main question is “How can the organisation of maintenance processes of Dutch housing associations, in different supply chain partnering principles and the related information management, be improved?” The answer is sought through case study research.

Hermeneutics applied to the quality of empirical databases

    No full text
Purpose: This paper seeks to present a conceptual framework to analyze and improve the quality of empirical databases throughout time - with operational results which are measurable in terms of cost-benefit. Design/methodology/approach: Basing themselves on the general approach of hermeneutics and, more specifically, on Fernand Braudel's concept of "temporalités étagées" and Norbert Elias's "evolutive continuum", the authors develop a temporal framework consisting of three stratified time levels in order to interpret shifts in the quality of databases. The soundness of the framework and its capability of delivering operational results are demonstrated by the development of a case study focusing on social security databases. A second case study in the context of digital cultural heritage is also developed to illustrate the general applicability of this interdisciplinary approach in the context of empirical information systems. Findings: Contrary to the assertions of common theories that postulate a permanent bijective relationship between records in a database and the corresponding reality, this paper provides insights which demonstrate that a database evolves over time along with the interpretation of the values that it allows one to determine. These interdisciplinary insights, when applied practically to concrete case studies, give rise to original operational results in the ICT field of data quality. Practical implications: The framework helps both the managers and the users of empirical databases to understand the necessity to integrate unforeseen observations, neglected a priori by virtue of the closed world assumption, and to develop operational recommendations to enhance the quality of databases. Originality/value: This paper is the first to show the potential of hermeneutics for the task of understanding the evolution of an empirical information system, and also the first to deliver operational outcomes. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe
