    Modelling and control of chaotic processes through their Bifurcation Diagrams generated with the help of Recurrent Neural Network models: Part 1—simulation studies

    Many real-world processes tend to be chaotic and also do not lead to satisfactory analytical modelling. It has been shown here that for such chaotic processes represented through short chaotic noisy time-series, a multi-input and multi-output recurrent neural networks model can be built which is capable of capturing the process trends and predicting the future values from any given starting condition. It is further shown that this capability can be achieved by the Recurrent Neural Network model when it is trained to very low value of mean squared error. Such a model can then be used for constructing the Bifurcation Diagram of the process leading to determination of desirable operating conditions. Further, this multi-input and multi-output model makes the process accessible for control using open-loop/closed-loop approaches or bifurcation control etc. All these studies have been carried out using a low dimensional discrete chaotic system of Hénon Map as a representative of some real-world processes

    Time-delayed impulsive control for discrete-time nonlinear systems with actuator saturation

    This paper focuses on the problem of time-delayed impulsive control with actuator saturation for discrete-time dynamical systems. By establishing a delayed impulsive difference inequality, combining with convex analysis and inequality techniques, some sufficient conditions are obtained to ensure exponential stability for discrete-time dynamical systems via time-delayed impulsive controller with actuator saturation. The designed controller admits the existence of some transmission delays in impulsive feedback law, and the control input variables are required to stay within an availability zone. Several numerical simulations are also given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed results.&nbsp

    Global output feedback stabilization for nonlinear fractional order time delay systems

By constructing a appropriate Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional, global asymptotic stability of the closed-loop systems is achieved. Moreover, sufficient conditions for the stability, for the particular class of fractional order time-delay system are obtained. Finally, simulation results dealing with typical bioreactor example, are given to illustrate that the proposed design procedures are very efficient and simple

    Intermittent control models of human standing: similarities and differences

    Two architectures of intermittent control are compared and contrasted in the context of the single inverted pendulum model often used for describing standing in humans. The architectures are similar insofar as they use periods of open-loop control punctuated by switching events when crossing a switching surface to keep the system state trajectories close to trajectories leading to equilibrium. The architectures differ in two significant ways. Firstly, in one case, the open-loop control trajectory is generated by a system-matched hold, and in the other case, the open-loop control signal is zero. Secondly, prediction is used in one case but not the other. The former difference is examined in this paper. The zero control alternative leads to periodic oscillations associated with limit cycles; whereas the system-matched control alternative gives trajectories (including homoclinic orbits) which contain the equilibrium point and do not have oscillatory behaviour. Despite this difference in behaviour, it is further shown that behaviour can appear similar when either the system is perturbed by additive noise or the system-matched trajectory generation is perturbed. The purpose of the research is to come to a common approach for understanding the theoretical properties of the two alternatives with the twin aims of choosing which provides the best explanation of current experimental data (which may not, by itself, distinguish beween the two alternatives) and suggesting future experiments to distinguish between the two alternatives

    Output feedback control of flow separation over an aerofoil using plasma actuators

    We address the problem of controlling the unsteady flow separation over an aerofoil, using plasma actuators. Despite the complexity of the dynamics of interest, we show how the problem of controlling flow separation can be formulated as a simple set-point tracking problem, so that a simple control strategy may be used. A robust output feedback control is designed, on the basis of a low-order, linear, dynamical model approximating the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, obtained from the snapshots of 2D laminar finite element simulations at Re=1,000. Fast flow reattachment is achieved, along with both stabilisation and increase/reduction of the lift/drag, respectively. Accurate 2D finite element simulations of the full-order nonlinear equations illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach: good dynamic performances are obtained, as both the Reynolds number and the angle of attack are varied. The chosen output can be experimentally measured by appropriate sensors and, despite its simplicity, the proposed set-point tracking controller is sufficient to suppress the laminar separation bubble; moreover, its extension to 3D turbulent configurations is straightforward, thus illustrating the effectiveness of the designed control algorithm in more practical conditions, which are far from the design envelope

    Complex networks typically involve multiple disciplines due to network dynamics and their statistical nature. When modeling practical networks, both impulsive effects and logical dynamics have recently attracted increasing attention. Hence, it is of interest and importance to consider hybrid complex networks with impulsive effects and logical dynamics. Relevant research is prevalent in cells, ecology, social systems, and communication engineering. In hybrid complex networks, numerous nodes are coupled through networks and their properties usually lead to complex dynamic behaviors, including discrete and continuous dynamics with finite values of time and state space. Generally, continuous and discrete sections of the systems are described by differential and difference equations, respectively. Logical networks are used to model the systems where time and state space take finite values. Although interesting results have been reported regarding hybrid complex networks, the analysis methods and relevant results could be further improved with respect to conservative impulsive delay inequalities and reproducibility of corresponding stability or synchronization criteria. Therefore, it is necessary to devise effective approaches to improve the analysis method and results dealing with hybrid complex networks

    Experiments Relevant to the Development of Laser Interferometric Gravitational Wave Detectors

    The development of gravitational wave detectors has been in progress for approximately twenty-five years. As yet there has been no clear evidence for the successful detection of such propagating fluctuations in the curvature of spacetime, but the prospects seem good that detectors of sufficient sensitivity to detect gravitational waves of astrophysical origin can be constructed in the near future. The most promising form of detector is the long baseline laser interferometer, and prototypes are being developed at a number of sites around the world. A 10 metre prototype is currently being developed in Glasgow. This thesis is an account of work based on the Glasgow prototype. After an elementary introduction to the theoretical foundations of gravitational waves, various sources of gravitational radiation, the nature of their emitted signal and their strengths are considered. Suitable detectors and their possible sensitivities are reviewed. Noise sources which could limit the sensitivity of laser interferometer detectors and the constraints which these place on the design of the detector are discussed. Since the test masses in an interferometer detector must be freely suspended as pendulums, yet their orientation must be accurately controlled to maintain correct alignment of the optical cavities forming the interferometer, an active orientation control system was developed and installed on the Glasgow prototype. This system provides a high degree of positional and angular stabilisation at low frequencies while leaving the test mass essentially free at high frequencies. Some of the potential limitations and noise sources are noted and their magnitudes calculated. A digital recording system was designed and used to record data from the prototype detector at Glasgow. The effects of the detector's response are analysed and techniques to recover the gravitational wave signal from the recorded data are described. The analysis of some data recorded with this system is then reported. The pulse statistics of the interferometer are analysed and the implications for searches for millisecond pulses of gravitational waves are discussed. The results of a search for periodic signals in the detector output are presented. Various sources of contamination which may be present in the detector output are identified, limitations of the recorded data are noted, and techniques which may be used to reduce the importance of these effects are described
