    Loop transformations for clustered VLIW architectures

    With increasing demands for performance by embedded systems, especially by digital signal processing (DSP) applications, embedded processors must increase available instructionlevel parallelism (ILP) within significant constraints on power consumption and chip cost. Unfortunately, supporting a large amount of ILP on a processor while maintaining a single register file increases chip cost and potentially decreases overall performance due to increased cycle time. To address this problem, some modern embedded processors partition the register file into multiple low-ported register files, each directly connected with one or more functional units. These functional unit/register file groups are called clusters. Clustered VLIW (very long instruction word) architectures need extra copy operations or delays to transfer values among clusters. To take advantage of clustered architectures, the compiler must expose parallelism for maximal functional-unit utilization, and schedule instructions to reduce intercluster communication overhead. High-level loop transformations offer an excellent opportunity to enhance the abilities of low-level optimizers to generate code for clustered architectures. This dissertation investigates the effects of three loop transformations, i.e., loop fusion, loop unrolling, and unroll-and-jam, on clustered VLIW architectures. The objective is to achieve high performance with low communication overhead. This dissertation discusses the following techniques: Loop Fusion This research examines the impact of loop fusion on clustered architectures. A metric based upon communication costs for guiding loop fusion is developed and tested on DSP benchmarks. Unroll-and-jam and Loop Unrolling A new method that integrates a communication cost model with an integer-optimization problem is developed to determine unroll amounts for loop unrolling and unroll-and-jam automatically for a specific loop on a specific architecture. These techniques have been implemented and tested using DSP benchmarks on simulated, clustered VLIW architectures and a real clustered, embedded processor, the TI TMS320C64X. The results show that the new techniques achieve an average speedup of 1.72-1.89 on five different clustered architectures.     Scalable Graph Analysis and Clustering on Commodity Hardware

    The abundance of large-scale datasets both in industry and academia today has lead to a need for scalable data analysis frameworks and libraries. This assertion is exceedingly apparent in large-scale graph datasets. The vast majority of existing frameworks focus on distributing computation within a cluster, neglecting to fully utilize each individual node, leading to poor overall performance. This thesis is motivated by the prevalence of Non-Uniform Memory Access (NUMA) architectures within multicore machines and the advancements in the performance of external memory devices like SSDs. This thesis focusses on the development of machine learning frameworks, libraries, and application development principles to enable scalable data analysis, with minimal resource consumption. We develop novel optimizations that leverage fine-grain I/O and NUMA-awareness to advance the state-of-the-art within the areas of scalable graph analytics and machine learning. We focus on minimality, scalability and memory parallelism when data reside either in (i) memory, (ii) semi-externally, or (iii) distributed memory. We target two core areas: (i) graph analytics and (ii) community detection (clustering). The semi-external memory (SEM) paradigm is an attractive middle ground for limited resource consumption and near-in-memory performance on a single thick compute node. In recent years, its adoption has steadily risen in popularity with framework developers, despite having limited adoption from application developers. We address key questions surrounding the development of state-of-the-art applications within an SEM, vertex-centric graph framework. Our target is to lower the barrier for entry to SEM, vertex-centric application development. As such, we develop Graphyti, a library of highly optimized applications in Semi-External Memory (SEM) using the FlashGraph framework. We utilize this library to identify the core principles that underlie the development of state-of-the-art vertex-centric graph applications in SEM. We then address scaling the task of community detection through clustering given arbitrary hardware budgets. We develop the clusterNOR extensible clustering framework and library with facilities for optimized scale-out and scale-up computation. In summation, this thesis develops key SEM design principles for graph analytics, introduces novel algorithmic and systems-oriented optimizations for scalable algorithms that utilize a two-step Majorize-Minimization or Minorize-Maximization (MM) objective function optimization pattern. The optimizations we develop enable the applications and libraries provided to attain state-of-the-art performance in varying memory settings

    AUTOMATING DATA-LAYOUT DECISIONS IN DOMAIN-SPECIFIC LANGUAGES

    A long-standing challenge in High-Performance Computing (HPC) is the simultaneous achievement of programmer productivity and hardware computational efficiency. The challenge has been exacerbated by the onset of multi- and many-core CPUs and accelerators. Only a few expert programmers have been able to hand-code domain-specific data transformations and vectorization schemes needed to extract the best possible performance on such architectures. In this research, we examined the possibility of automating these methods by developing a Domain-Specific Language (DSL) framework. Our DSL approach extends C++14 by embedding into it a high-level data-parallel array language, and by using a domain-specific compiler to compile to hybrid-parallel code. We also implemented an array index-space transformation algebra within this high-level array language to manipulate array data-layouts and data-distributions. The compiler introduces a novel method for SIMD auto-vectorization based on array data-layouts. Our new auto-vectorization technique is shown to outperform the default auto-vectorization strategy by up to 40% for stencil computations. The compiler also automates distributed data movement with overlapping of local compute with remote data movement using polyhedral integer set analysis. Along with these main innovations, we developed a new technique using C++ template metaprogramming for developing embedded DSLs using C++. We also proposed a domain-specific compiler intermediate representation that simplifies data flow analysis of abstract DSL constructs. We evaluated our framework by constructing a DSL for the HPC grand-challenge domain of lattice quantum chromodynamics. Our DSL yielded performance gains of up to twice the flop rate over existing production C code for selected kernels. This gain in performance was obtained while using less than one-tenth the lines of code. The performance of this DSL was also competitive with the best hand-optimized and hand-vectorized code, and is an order of magnitude better than existing production DSLs.Doctor of Philosoph

    A Domain-Specific Language and Editor for Parallel Particle Methods

    Domain-specific languages (DSLs) are of increasing importance in scientific high-performance computing to reduce development costs, raise the level of abstraction and, thus, ease scientific programming. However, designing and implementing DSLs is not an easy task, as it requires knowledge of the application domain and experience in language engineering and compilers. Consequently, many DSLs follow a weak approach using macros or text generators, which lack many of the features that make a DSL a comfortable for programmers. Some of these features---e.g., syntax highlighting, type inference, error reporting, and code completion---are easily provided by language workbenches, which combine language engineering techniques and tools in a common ecosystem. In this paper, we present the Parallel Particle-Mesh Environment (PPME), a DSL and development environment for numerical simulations based on particle methods and hybrid particle-mesh methods. PPME uses the meta programming system (MPS), a projectional language workbench. PPME is the successor of the Parallel Particle-Mesh Language (PPML), a Fortran-based DSL that used conventional implementation strategies. We analyze and compare both languages and demonstrate how the programmer's experience can be improved using static analyses and projectional editing.     Python FPGA Programming with Data-Centric Multi-Level Design

    Although high-level synthesis (HLS) tools have significantly improved programmer productivity over hardware description languages, developing for FPGAs remains tedious and error prone. Programmers must learn and implement a large set of vendor-specific syntax, patterns, and tricks to optimize (or even successfully compile) their applications, while dealing with ever-changing toolflows from the FPGA vendors. We propose a new way to develop, optimize, and compile FPGA programs. The Data-Centric parallel programming (DaCe) framework allows applications to be defined by their dataflow and control flow through the Stateful DataFlow multiGraph (SDFG) representation, capturing the abstract program characteristics, and exposing a plethora of optimization opportunities. In this work, we show how extending SDFGs with multi-level Library Nodes incorporates both domain-specific and platform-specific optimizations into the design flow, enabling knowledge transfer across application domains and FPGA vendors. We present the HLS-based FPGA code generation backend of DaCe, and show how SDFGs are code generated for either FPGA vendor, emitting efficient HLS code that is structured and annotated to implement the desired architecture

    Domain Specific Computing in Tightly-Coupled Heterogeneous Systems

    Over the past several decades, researchers and programmers across many disciplines have relied on Moores law and Dennard scaling for increases in compute capability in modern processors. However, recent data suggest that the number of transistors per square inch on integrated circuits is losing pace with Moores laws projection due to the breakdown of Dennard scaling at smaller semiconductor process nodes. This has signaled the beginning of a new “golden age in computer architecture” in which the paradigm will be shifted from improving traditional processor performance for general tasks to architecting hardware that executes a class of applications in a high-performing manner. This shift will be paved, in part, by making compute systems more heterogeneous and investigating domain specific architectures. However, the notion of domain specific architectures raises many research questions. Specifically, what constitutes a domain? How does one architect hardware for a specific domain? In this dissertation, we present our work towards domain specific computing. We start by constructing a guiding definition for our target domain and then creating a benchmark suite of applications based on our domain definition. We then use quantitative metrics from the literature to characterize our domain in order to gain insights regarding what would be most beneficial in hardware targeted specifically for the domain. From the characterization, we learn that data movement is a particularly salient aspect of our domain. Motivated by this fact, we evaluate our target platform, the Intel HARPv2 CPU+FPGA system, for architecting domain specific hardware through a portability and performance evaluation. To guide the creation of domain specific hardware for this platform, we create a novel tool to quantify spatial and temporal locality. We apply this tool to our benchmark suite and use the generated outputs as features to an unsupervised clustering algorithm. We posit that the resulting clusters represent sub-domains within our originally specified domain; specifically, these clusters inform whether a kernel of computation should be designed as a widely vectorized or deeply pipelined compute unit. Using the lessons learned from the domain characterization and hardware platform evaluation, we outline our process of designing hardware for our domain, and empirically verify that our prediction regarding a wide or deep kernel implementation is correct

    Automatic Parallelization of Tiled Stencil Loop Nests on GPUs

    This thesis attempts to design and implement a compiler framework based on the polyhedral model. The compiler automatically parallelizes loop nests; especially stencil kernels, into efficient GPU code by loop tiling transformations which the polyhedral model describes. To enhance parallel performance, we introduce three practically efficient techniques to process different types of loop nests. The experimental results of our compiler framework have demonstrated that these advanced techniques can outperform previous approaches. Firstly, we aim to find efficient tiling transformations without violating data dependences. How to select a tile's shape and size is an open issue that is performance-critical and influenced by GPU's hardware constraints. We propose an approach to determine the tile shapes out of consideration for improving two-level parallelism of GPUs. The new approach finds appropriate tiling hyperplanes by embedding parallelism-enhancing constraints into the polyhedral model to maximize intra-tile, i.e., intra-SM parallelism. This improves the load balance among the streaming processors (SPs), which execute a wavefront of loop iterations within a tile. We eliminate parallelism-hindering false dependences to optimize inter-tile, i.e., inter-SM parallelism. This improves the load balance among the streaming multiprocessors (SMs), which execute a wavefront of tiles. Furthermore, to avoid combinatorial explosion of tile size's configurations, we present a model-driven approach to automating tile size selection that is performance-critical for loop tiling transformations, especially for DOACROSS loop nests. Our tile size selection model accurately estimates the execution times of tiled loop nests running on GPUs. The selected tile sizes lead to the performance results that are close to the best observed for a range of problem sizes tested. Finally, to address the difficulty and low-performance of parallelizing widely used SOR stencil loop nests, we present a new tiled parallel SOR method, called MLSOR, which admits more efficient data-parallel SIMD execution on GPUs. Unlike the previous two approaches that are dependence-preserving, the basic idea is to algorithmically restructure a stencil kernel based on a non-dependence-preserving parallelization scheme to avoid pipelining for higher parallelism. The new approach can be implemented in compilers through a pattern matching pass to optimize SOR-like DOACROSS loop nests on GPUs

    Beyond shared memory loop parallelism in the polyhedral model

    2013 Spring.Includes bibliographical references.With the introduction of multi-core processors, motivated by power and energy concerns, parallel processing has become main-stream. Parallel programming is much more difficult due to its non-deterministic nature, and because of parallel programming bugs that arise from non-determinacy. One solution is automatic parallelization, where it is entirely up to the compiler to efficiently parallelize sequential programs. However, automatic parallelization is very difficult, and only a handful of successful techniques are available, even after decades of research. Automatic parallelization for distributed memory architectures is even more problematic in that it requires explicit handling of data partitioning and communication. Since data must be partitioned among multiple nodes that do not share memory, the original memory allocation of sequential programs cannot be directly used. One of the main contributions of this dissertation is the development of techniques for generating distributed memory parallel code with parametric tiling. Our approach builds on important contributions to the polyhedral model, a mathematical framework for reasoning about program transformations. We show that many affine control programs can be uniformized only with simple techniques. Being able to assume uniform dependences significantly simplifies distributed memory code generation, and also enables parametric tiling. Our approach implemented in the AlphaZ system, a system for prototyping analyses, transformations, and code generators in the polyhedral model. The key features of AlphaZ are memory re-allocation, and explicit representation of reductions. We evaluate our approach on a collection of polyhedral kernels from the PolyBench suite, and show that our approach scales as well as PLuTo, a state-of-the-art shared memory automatic parallelizer using the polyhedral model. Automatic parallelization is only one approach to dealing with the non-deterministic nature of parallel programming that leaves the difficulty entirely to the compiler. Another approach is to develop novel parallel programming languages. These languages, such as X10, aim to provide highly productive parallel programming environment by including parallelism into the language design. However, even in these languages, parallel bugs remain to be an important issue that hinders programmer productivity. Another contribution of this dissertation is to extend the array dataflow analysis to handle a subset of X10 programs. We apply the result of dataflow analysis to statically guarantee determinism. Providing static guarantees can significantly increase programmer productivity by catching questionable implementations at compile-time, or even while programming
