    The Mutualistic Relationship between Information Systems and the Humanities

    The paper explores the nature of the relationship between the study fields of Information Systems and the humanities. Although literature on Humanities Computing states in principle that there is a bi-directional, beneficial symbiotic relationship, most studies and reflections investigate only the application of information technology in the humanities. This implies that the relation is commensalistic rather that mutualistic. However, studies do exist that implement theoretical constructs borrowed from the humanities in various aspects of Information Systems. Therefore, the author pleads that more recognition be given to the pre-discipline of Humanities-enriched Information Systems and proposes theoretical and practical ways to make the field more independent. The paper uses an interpretive research approach and explores the issue at hand on a meta-theoretical level. It suggests that, by building on the foundations of existing, pre-disciplinary enrichment endeavors, a new paradigm of Information Systems research may be acknowledged and nursed in order to facilitate further growth of the discipline

It also examines the contribution of informetrics to MIS research in delineating the intellectual structure of information systems, comparing cumulative research traditions, demonstrating theoretical differences between competing approaches, tracing a paradigm shift. Development in IS provides MIS researchers with ample opportunities for cross-disciplinary research, new research tools, new theories to understand information systems phenomena, etc

    Os espaços verdes são elementos essenciais das cidades. Estes espaços contribuem significativamente para a saúde e bem-estar dos adolescentes no meio urbano, constituindo modos de intervenção custo-efetiva para a redução das iniquidades em saúde e a transformação de cidades resilientes às alterações climáticas. No que concerne o planeamento e design dos espaços verdes urbanos, as necessidades e interesses dos adolescentes tendem a ser negligenciados. Foi objetivo deste estudo identificar facilitadores, barreiras e promotores de uso de espaços verdes urbanos pelos adolescentes da Área Metropolitana do Porto. Foi realizado um estudo qualitativo com recolha de dados através de grupos focais. Os participantes foram selecionados da coorte Geração XXI (G21) e foram estratificados de acordo com estatuto socioeconómico. Os dados foram analisados tematicamente, usando-se uma abordagem dedutivo-indutiva. A proximidade e multifuncionalidade dos espaços verdes urbanos foram os facilitadores de uso mais citados pelos adolescentes; enquanto que elevada pressão de visitantes, falta de vegetação e falta de manutenção foram identificados como importantes barreiras. Os adolescentes destacaram a necessidade de aumentar em número e tamanho os espaços verdes na Área Metropolitana do Porto, potenciando simultaneamente a sua multifuncionalidade através da provisão de equipamentos.Green spaces are an essential element in cities. They can significantly contribute to adolescents' health and wellbeing in the urban setting, being at the same time a cost-effective intervention to reduce health inequities and contributing to climate-resilient cities. Adolescents needs and desires regarding the planning and design of urban green spaces tend to be neglected. We aimed to identify facilitators, barriers and promoters of use of urban green spaces by adolescents in the Porto Metropolitan Area. A focus group design was used. Participants were selected from the Generation XXI cohort (G21) and were stratified according to their socioeconomic status. Data were analyzed thematically using a deductive-inductive approach. Proximity and multifunctionality of urban green spaces were the most cited facilitators of use, by adolescents; whilst high visitors' pressure, lack of vegetation and lack of maintenance were identified as important barriers. Adolescents enhance the need to increase the number and size of urban green spaces in the Porto Metropolitan Aera, while potentiating their multifunctionality by means of equipment provision

    Critiquing the Inter-Disciplinary Literature on Food Fraud

    The European Horsemeat Scandal of 2013 is a recent manifestation of the problem of ‘Food fraud’. It is important from a criminological perspective because it exists at the nexus between organized crime and bad business practice and is a contemporary example of criminal-entrepreneurship. From a practical perspective it is a pernicious criminal activity perpetuated by diverse organized-crime-groups, rogue-entrepreneurs and food-industry-insiders. It is a white-collar-crime committed in the commercial arena, across an extended international food-chain. Geographic and policy boundaries make it difficult to police. Although a high level of awareness of the fraud exists globally, there is a dearth of critical academic research into the phenomenon. The extant literature is spread thinly across various disciplinary silos.     Showing the Benefits of Applying a Model Driven Architecture for Developing Secure OLAP Applications

    Data Warehouses (DW) manage enterprise information that is queried for decision making purposes by using On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) tools. The establishment of security constraints in all development stages and operations of the DW is highly important since otherwise, unauthorized users may discover vital business information. The final users of OLAP tools access and analyze the information from the corporate DW by using specific views or cubes based on the multidimensional modelling containing the facts and dimensions (with the corresponding classification hierarchies) that a decision maker or group of decision makers are interested in. Thus, it is important that security constraints will be also established over this metadata layer that connects the DW's repository with the decision makers, that is, directly over the multidimensional structures that final users manage. In doing so, we will not have to define specific security constraints for every particular user, thereby reducing the developing time and costs for secure OLAP applications. In order to achieve this goal, a model driven architecture to automatically develop secure OLAP applications from models has been defined. This paper shows the benefits of this architecture by applying it to a case study in which an OLAP application for an airport DW is automatically developed from models. The architecture is composed of: (1) the secure conceptual modelling by using a UML profile; (2) the secure logical modelling for OLAP applications by using an extension of CWM; (3) the secure implementation into a specific OLAP tool, SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS); and (4) the transformations needed to automatically generate logical models from conceptual models and the final secure implementation.This research is part of the following projects: SERENIDAD (PEII11- 037-7035) financed by the ”Viceconsejería de Ciencia y Tecnología de la Junta de Comunidades de Castilla-La Mancha” (Spain) and FEDER, and SIGMA-CC (TIN2012-36904) and GEODAS (TIN2012-37493-C03-01) financed by the ”Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad” (Spain)

    Modeling network traffic on a global network-centric system with artificial neural networks

    This dissertation proposes a new methodology for modeling and predicting network traffic. It features an adaptive architecture based on artificial neural networks and is especially suited for large-scale, global, network-centric systems. Accurate characterization and prediction of network traffic is essential for network resource sizing and real-time network traffic management. As networks continue to increase in size and complexity, the task has become increasingly difficult and current methodology is not sufficiently adaptable or scaleable. Current methods model network traffic with express mathematical equations which are not easily maintained or adjusted. The accuracy of these models is based on detailed characterization of the traffic stream which is measured at points along the network where the data is often subject to constant variation and rapid evolution. The main contribution of this dissertation is development of a methodology that allows utilization of artificial neural networks with increased capability for adaptation and scalability. Application on an operating global, broadband network, the Connexion by Boeingʼ network, was evaluated to establish feasibility. A simulation model was constructed and testing was conducted with operational scenarios to demonstrate applicability on the case study network and to evaluate improvements in accuracy over existing methods --Abstract, page iii
