Object grasping and manipulation in capuchin monkeys (genera Cebus and Sapajus)
The abilities to perform skilled hand movements and to manipulate objects dexterously are landmarks in the evolution of primates. The study of how primates use their hands to grasp and manipulate objects in accordance with their needs sheds light on how these species are physically and mentally equipped to deal with the problems they encounter in their daily life. We report data on capuchin monkeys, highly manipulative platyrrhine species that usually spend a great deal of time in active manipulation to search for food and to prepare it for ingestion. Our aim is to provide an overview of current knowledge on the ability of capuchins to grasp and manipulate objects, with a special focus on how these species express their cognitive potential through manual behaviour. Data on the ability of capuchins to move their hands and on the neural correlates sustaining their actions are reported, as are findings on the manipulative ability of capuchins to anticipate future actions and to relate objects to other objects and substrates.
The manual behaviour of capuchins is considered in different domains, such as motor planning, extractive foraging and tool use, in both captive and natural settings. Anatomofunctional and behavioural similarities to and differences from other haplorrhine species regarding manual dexterity are also discussed
Determination of heat transfer coefficient for hot stamping process
© 2015 The Authors.The selection of the heat transfer coefficient is one of the most important factors that determine the reliability of FE simulation results of a hot stamping process, in which the formed component is held within cold dies until fully quenched. The quenching process could take up to 10. seconds. In order to maximise the production rate, the optimised quenching parameters should be identified to achieve the highest possible quenching rate and to reduce the quenching time. For this purpose, a novel-testing rig for the Gleeble 3800 thermo- mechanical simulator was designed and manufactured, with an advanced control system for temperature and contact pressure. The effect of contact pressure on the heat transfer coefficient was studied. The findings of this research will provide useful guidelines for the selection of the heat transfer coefficient in simulations of hot stamping processes and useful information for the design of hot stamping processes
DigiWall - an audio mostly game
DigiWall is a hybrid between a climbing wall and a computer game. The climbing grips are equipped with touch sensors and lights. The interface has no computer screen. Instead sound and music are principle drivers of DigiWall interaction models. The gaming experience combines sound and music with
physical movement and the sparse visuals of the climbing grips.
The DigiWall soundscape carries both verbal and nonverbal information. Verbal information includes instructions on how to play a game, scores, level numbers etc. Non-verbal information is about speed, position, direction, events etc.
Many different types of interaction models are possible: competitions, collaboration exercises and aesthetic experiences
Transitory Inhibition of the left anterior intraparietal sulcus impairs joint actions: a continuous Theta-Burst stimulation study
Although temporal coordination is a hallmark of motor interactions, joint action (JA) partners do not simply synchronize; they rather dynamically adapt to each other to achieve a joint goal. We created a novel paradigm to tease apart the processes underlying synchronization and JA and tested the causal contribution of the left anterior intraparietal sulcus (aIPS) in these behaviors. Participants had to synchronize their congruent or incongruent movements with a virtual partner in two conditions: (i) being instructed on what specific action to perform, independently from what action the partner performed (synchronization), and (ii) being instructed to adapt online to the partner's action (JA). Offline noninvasive inhibitory brain stimulation (continuous theta-burst stimulation) over the left aIPS selectively modulated interpersonal synchrony in JA by boosting synchrony during congruent interactions and impairing it during incongruent ones, while leaving performance in the synchronization condition unaffected. These results suggest that the left aIPS plays a causal role in supporting online adaptation to a partner's action goal, whereas it is not necessarily engaged in social situations where the goal of the partner is irrelevant. This indicates that, during JAs, the integration of one's own and the partner's action goal is supported by aIPS
Fully submerged composite cryogenic testing
New methods for marine salvage and decommissioning of structures in the open sea are continually being sought in order to improve control and lower operational costs [1]. The concept design of a lightweight, cryogenic, marine, heavy lift, buoyancy system has been investigated [2]. The objective is to be able to raise or lower high mass objects controlled solely from a surface support vessel. The overall design concept and associated system development issues have been discussed previously. A number of the sub-systems in one complete buoyancy system involve considerable design and development, these include: structural design of the buoyancy chamber, mechanical systems to control and connection to the lift device, the cryogenic system itself and overall process control systems. The main area of concern in the design process is the composite cryogenic Dewar. This is required to operate not only at temperatures as low as -196oC but also to withstand pressure differences exceeding 35bar. As such the composite materials have to perform in a very aggressive environment. This work details a method for fully submersed composite cryogenic testing in order to qualify the materials for use in the Dewar of the buoyancy system
Compliant joint
A compliant joint is provided for prosthetic and robotic devices which permits rotation in three different planes. The joint provides for the controlled use of cable under motion. Perpendicular outer mounting frames are joined by swaged cables that interlock at a center block. Ball bearings allow for the free rotation of the second mounting frame relative to the first mounting frame within a predetermined angular rotation that is controlled by two stop devices. The cables allow for compliance at the stops and the cables allow for compliance in six degrees of freedom enabling the duplication or simulation of the rotational movement and flexibility of a natural hip or knee joint, as well as the simulation of a joint designed for a specific robotic component for predetermined design parameters
GRIPS - Gamma-Ray Imaging, Polarimetry and Spectroscopy
We propose to perform a continuously scanning all-sky survey from 200 keV to
80 MeV achieving a sensitivity which is better by a factor of 40 or more
compared to the previous missions in this energy range. The Gamma-Ray Imaging,
Polarimetry and Spectroscopy (GRIPS) mission addresses fundamental questions in
ESA's Cosmic Vision plan. Among the major themes of the strategic plan, GRIPS
has its focus on the evolving, violent Universe, exploring a unique energy
window. We propose to investigate -ray bursts and blazars, the
mechanisms behind supernova explosions, nucleosynthesis and spallation, the
enigmatic origin of positrons in our Galaxy, and the nature of radiation
processes and particle acceleration in extreme cosmic sources including pulsars
and magnetars. The natural energy scale for these non-thermal processes is of
the order of MeV. Although they can be partially and indirectly studied using
other methods, only the proposed GRIPS measurements will provide direct access
to their primary photons. GRIPS will be a driver for the study of transient
sources in the era of neutrino and gravitational wave observatories such as
IceCUBE and LISA, establishing a new type of diagnostics in relativistic and
nuclear astrophysics. This will support extrapolations to investigate star

Gamma-ray diagnostics of Type Ia supernovae: Predictions of observables from three-dimensional modeling
Besides the fact that the gamma-ray emission due to radioactive decays is
responsible for powering the light curves of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), gamma
rays themselves are of particular interest as a diagnostic tool because they
provide a direct way to obtain deeper insights into the nucleosynthesis and the
kinematics of these explosion events. Focusing on two of the most broadly
discussed SN Ia progenitor scenarios - a delayed detonation in a
Chandrasekhar-mass white dwarf (WD) and a violent merger of two WDs - we use
three-dimensional explosion models and perform radiative transfer simulations
to obtain synthetic gamma-ray spectra. Both chosen models produce the same mass
of 56Ni and have similar optical properties that are in reasonable agreement
with the recently observed supernova SN 2011fe. In contrast to the optical
regime, the gamma-ray emission of our two chosen models proves to be rather
different. The almost direct connection of the emission of gamma rays to
fundamental physical processes occuring in SNe Ia permits additional
constraints concerning several explosion model properties that are not easily
accessible within other wavelength ranges. Proposed future MeV missions such as
GRIPS will resolve all spectral details only for nearby SNe Ia, but hardness
ratio and light curve measurements still allow for a distinction of the two
different models at 10 and 16 Mpc for an exposure time of 10^6 s, respectively.
The possibility to detect the strongest line features up to the Virgo distance
will offer the opportunity to build up a first sample of SN Ia detections in
the gamma-ray energy range and underlines the importance of future space
