    Forest mapping in Peninsular Malaysia using Random Forest and Support Vector Machine Classifiers on Google Earth Engine

    Forests play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of the global ecosystem by sustaining the interactions between living and non-living entities. Changes in forest areas encompass both growth and loss, often driven by development activities. Assessing forest cover and its changes is also a pivotal issue in forest management. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the performance of machine learning algorithms, namely Random Forest (RF) and Support Vector Machine (SVM), in mapping forest cover in Peninsular Malaysia. Landsat 5 TM and Landsat 8 OLI images were utilized to derive forest cover information. The classification process was automated using the remote sensing data management platform, Google Earth Engine (GEE). The accuracy assessment test using the Kappa coefficient resulted in a value of 0.7893 for the RF algorithm and 0.6328 for the SVM algorithm for the year 2010. Whereas, for the year 2020 the Kappa coefficient yielded 0.7475 for RF and 0.5893 for SVM. However, forest cover returned highest RF Kappa coefficient values of 0.875 (2010) and 0.8793 (2020), and SVM Kappa coefficient values of 0.8116 (2010) and 0.7313 (2020). The results implied that RF performed better in the land use classification compared to SVM. It is evident that this study can aid various stakeholders in assessing future plans and developments without compromising the environment

    Amazon hydrology from space : scientific advances and future challenges

    As the largest river basin on Earth, the Amazon is of major importance to the world's climate and water resources. Over the past decades, advances in satellite-based remote sensing (RS) have brought our understanding of its terrestrial water cycle and the associated hydrological processes to a new era. Here, we review major studies and the various techniques using satellite RS in the Amazon. We show how RS played a major role in supporting new research and key findings regarding the Amazon water cycle, and how the region became a laboratory for groundbreaking investigations of new satellite retrievals and analyses. At the basin-scale, the understanding of several hydrological processes was only possible with the advent of RS observations, such as the characterization of "rainfall hotspots" in the Andes-Amazon transition, evapotranspiration rates, and variations of surface waters and groundwater storage. These results strongly contribute to the recent advances of hydrological models and to our new understanding of the Amazon water budget and aquatic environments. In the context of upcoming hydrology-oriented satellite missions, which will offer the opportunity for new synergies and new observations with finer space-time resolution, this review aims to guide future research agenda toward integrated monitoring and understanding of the Amazon water from space. Integrated multidisciplinary studies, fostered by international collaborations, set up future directions to tackle the great challenges the Amazon is currently facing, from climate change to increased anthropogenic pressure

    This volume contains a series of papers prepared for presentation at the 14th International Coral Reef Symposium, originally planned for July 2020 in Bremen, Germany, but postponed until 2021 (online) and 2022 (in person) because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It contains a series of papers illustrating the breadth of modern studies on coral reefs and the response of the reef science community to the threats that coral reefs now face, above all from climate change.
