    Robust and Efficient Uncertainty Quantification and Validation of RFIC Isolation

    Modern communication and identification products impose demanding constraints on reliability of components. Due to this statistical constraints more and more enter optimization formulations of electronic products. Yield constraints often require efficient sampling techniques to obtain uncertainty quantification also at the tails of the distributions. These sampling techniques should outperform standard Monte Carlo techniques, since these latter ones are normally not efficient enough to deal with tail probabilities. One such a technique, Importance Sampling, has successfully been applied to optimize Static Random Access Memories (SRAMs) while guaranteeing very small failure probabilities, even going beyond 6-sigma variations of parameters involved. Apart from this, emerging uncertainty quantifications techniques offer expansions of the solution that serve as a response surface facility when doing statistics and optimization. To efficiently derive the coefficients in the expansions one either has to solve a large number of problems or a huge combined problem. Here parameterized Model Order Reduction (MOR) techniques can be used to reduce the work load. To also reduce the amount of parameters we identify those that only affect the variance in a minor way. These parameters can simply be set to a fixed value. The remaining parameters can be viewed as dominant. Preservation of the variation also allows to make statements about the approximation accuracy obtained by the parameter-reduced problem. This is illustrated on an RLC circuit. Additionally, the MOR technique used should not affect the variance significantly. Finally we consider a methodology for reliable RFIC isolation using floor-plan modeling and isolation grounding. Simulations show good comparison with measurements

    Fusion of Model-free Reinforcement Learning with Microgrid Control: Review and Vision

    Challenges and opportunities coexist in microgrids as a result of emerging large-scale distributed energy resources (DERs) and advanced control techniques. In this paper, a comprehensive review of microgrid control is presented with its fusion of model-free reinforcement learning (MFRL). A high-level research map of microgrid control is developed from six distinct perspectives, followed by bottom-level modularized control blocks illustrating the configurations of grid-following (GFL) and grid-forming (GFM) inverters. Then, mainstream MFRL algorithms are introduced with an explanation of how MFRL can be integrated into the existing control framework. Next, the application guideline of MFRL is summarized with a discussion of three fusing approaches, i.e., model identification and parameter tuning, supplementary signal generation, and controller substitution, with the existing control framework.     A Passivity-Based Approach to Voltage Stabilization in DC Microgrids with ZIP loads

    We consider the application of passivity theory to the problem of voltage stabilization in DC microgrids, which are composed of distributed generation units, dynamic RLC lines, and nonlinear ZIP (constant impedance, constant current, and constant power) loads. To this aim, we rst provide a novel result on stable interconnection of multiple passive systems and later consider its applications to microgrids. More specically, we consider decentralized multivariable PI controllers proposed in [27], and show that they passivate the generation units and the loads under certain conditions. To prove voltage stability in the closed-loop microgrid, we exploit properties of interconnection, passivity of individual components, and LaSalle's invariance theorem. Moreover, we provide explicit inequalities on control gains to design these stabilizing controllers. Control synthesis requires only the knowledge of local parameters and is always feasible allowing removal and addition of DGUs in a plug-n-play fashion. Theoretical results are backed up by simulations in PSCAD

However, fundamental differences exist between conventional thermal, hydro, and nuclear generation and wind power, such as different generation systems and the difficulty in controlling the primary movement of a wind turbine, due to the wind and its random fluctuations. These differences are reflected in the specific interaction of wind turbines with the power system.     Investigation into maximizing component availability for superconducting cables in turbo-electric distributed propulsion aircraft

    The commercial aviation industry is growing at a substantial rate, with demand doubling every 15 years and this trend is set to continue well into the 21st Century. At the same time regulatory pressures are being exerted on the industry as governments around the world seek to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions in an effort to contain global temperature rise to 2°C . Combined with existing infrastructure challenges, these issues are forcing air-framers to develop new, novel designs that support sustainable approaches to future aviation to meet environmental, social and economic demands. The pathway to decarbonisation of aviation will involve a combination of fuel, technology and operational measures. Many of the proposed technologies, such as electrical propulsion, are inherently disruptive and require changes to supply-chains,ground operations, maintenance standards and procedures, and pilot training. Such disruption is unavoidable given the scale of the challenge of electrical propulsion: a typical widebody jet engine for passenger aircraft can output over 22 MW fully loaded; an equivalent electrical system must be able to generate, distribute, and produce same amount of thrust with equal or greater reliability than the existing drivetrain that has been perfected over the course of the last century. Turbo-electric Distributed Propulsion (TeDP) is an approach for the electrification of propulsion systems on aircraft that aims to do this. Instead of large turbofan engines used to generate thrust, power in the engines is converted to electricity using electrical generators, and then distributed electrically through a network to propulsion motors placed in aerodynamically advantageous locations, significant fuel savings and performance benefits may be realised. Electrification of the propulsion system comes with large weight penalties. It is critical that the weight of the electrical power system does not mitigate the benefits of electrification. Superconducting electrical machines have been proposed as a route to lightweighting the electrical power system due to their promising high power densities compared to conventional electrical machines. It is proposed that the rest of the electrical power system be superconducting as far as technically possible to minimise heat sinks within the system. Integration of superconducting materials into the most safety critical aspects of commercial aviation raises multiple research questions regarding the design of resilient systems and how appropriate electrical protection strategies can be designed given the strict electric, magnetic, and thermal operating requirements that these components have. All electrical systems experience faults. This Thesis investigates how these faults manifest within a compact, power-electronically interfaced, superconducting network. The research presented in this thesis captures electrical protection requirements through modelling, simulation, and experimentation to develop requirements for TeDP feeder cables. By building on these requirements this thesis will then show how cable design can be optimised to withstand faults and present a control method which enables maximising throughput of cables during temperature rise events.
