Feature Papers of Drones - Volume I
[EN] The present book is divided into two volumes (Volume I: articles 1â23, and Volume II: articles 24â54) which compile the articles and communications submitted to the Topical Collection âFeature Papers of Dronesâ during the years 2020 to 2022 describing novel or new cutting-edge designs, developments, and/or applications of unmanned vehicles (drones). Articles 1â8 are devoted to the developments of drone design, where new concepts and modeling strategies as well as effective designs that improve drone stability and autonomy are introduced. Articles 9â16 focus on the communication aspects of drones as effective strategies for smooth deployment and efficient functioning are required. Therefore, several developments that aim to optimize performance and security are presented. In this regard, one of the most directly related topics is drone swarms, not only in terms of communication but also human-swarm interaction and their applications for science missions, surveillance, and disaster rescue operations. Military Innovation in the Third Age of U.S. Unmanned Aviation, 1991â2015
Military innovation studies have largely relied on monocausal accountsârationalism, institutionalism,
or cultureâto explain technologically innovative and adaptive outcomes in defense organizations. None of
these perspectives alone provided a compelling explanation for the adoption outcomes of unmanned aerial
vehicles (UAVs) in the U.S. military from 1991 to 2015. Two questions motivated this research: Why,
despite abundant material resources, mature technology, and operational need, are the most-capable UAVs
not in the inventory across the services? What accounts for variations and patterns in UAV innovation
adoption? The study selected ten UAV program episodes from the Air Force and Navy, categorized as high-,
medium-, and low-end cases, for within-case and cross-case analysis. Primary and secondary sources, plus
interviews, enabled process tracing across episodes. The results showed a pattern of adoption or rejection
based on a logic-of-utility effectiveness and consistent resource availability: a military problem to solve, and
a capability gap in threats or tasks and consistent monetary capacity; furthermore, ideational factors
strengthened or weakened adoption. In conclusion, the study undermines single-perspective arguments as
sole determinants of innovation, reveals that military culture is not monolithic in determining outcomes, and
demonstrates that civil-military relationships no longer operate where civilian leaders hold inordinate sway

Advantages and challenges of unmanned aerial vehicle autonomy in the Postheroic age
Over the past decade, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have revolutionized how the U.S. engages elusive militants in low-intensity conflicts by allowing the U.S. to project continuous military power without risking combat casualties. While UAV usage promises additional tactical advantages in future conflicts, little agreement exists regarding a strategic vision for UAV research and development, necessary for the U.S. to allocate limited resources among UAV development programs that address national security objectives. The present research makes the case for a future UAV technology evolutionary path leading to fully autonomous intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR)/strike UAV systems for the United States Air Force that are capable of sensing their environments through multiple modalities, recognizing patterns, and executing appropriate actions in response to their real-time analyses. The thesis addresses enabling technology inroads stemming from major improvements in our understanding of human neural circuitry that promise to enable innovations in the artificial intelligence needed to achieve autonomous system function. Arguments are based on projected military and economic benefits of autonomous systems and extend the historical model established by the CIA\u27s successful UAV program to unconventional warfare (UW) conflicts that the U.S. Air Force finds itself ill-equipped to handle. Counter-arguments are addressed relating to uncontrolled lethal technology, conflict initiation thresholds, and the vulnerability of overreliance on high-technology systems. In making the case for fully automated UAV technology, research provides a strategic future vision for autonomous UAV usage by highlighting the important interaction of artificial intelligence, âsmartâ wide-area sensors, and cooperative micro UAVs
