    Get PDF
Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a heuristic global optimization method, proposed originally by Kennedy and Eberhart in 1995. It is now one of the most commonly used optimization techniques. This survey presented a comprehensive investigation of PSO. On one hand, we provided advances with PSO, including its modifications (including quantum-behaved PSO, bare-bones PSO, chaotic PSO, and fuzzy PSO), population topology (as fully connected, von Neumann, ring, star, random, etc.), hybridization (with genetic algorithm, simulated annealing, Tabu search, artificial immune system, ant colony algorithm, artificial bee colony, differential evolution, harmonic search, and biogeography-based optimization), extensions (to multiobjective, constrained, discrete, and binary optimization), theoretical analysis (parameter selection and tuning, and convergence analysis), and parallel implementation (in multicore, multiprocessor, GPU, and cloud computing forms). On the other hand, we offered a survey on applications of PSO to the following eight fields: electrical and electronic engineering, automation control systems, communication theory, operations research, mechanical engineering, fuel and energy, medicine, chemistry, and biology. It is hoped that this survey would be beneficial for the researchers studying PSO algorithms

One of the human diseases with a high rate of mortality each year is breast cancer (BC). Among all the forms of cancer, BC is the commonest cause of death among women globally. Some of the effective ways of data classification are data mining and classification methods. These methods are particularly efficient in the medical field due to the presence of irrelevant and redundant attributes in medical datasets. Such redundant attributes are not needed to obtain an accurate estimation of disease diagnosis. Teaching learning-based optimization (TLBO) is a new metaheuristic that has been successfully applied to several intractable optimization problems in recent years. This paper presents the use of a multi-objective TLBO algorithm for the selection of feature subsets in automatic BC diagnosis. For the classification task in this work, the logistic regression (LR) method was deployed. From the results, the projected method produced better BC dataset classification accuracy (classified into malignant and benign). This result showed that the projected TLBO is an efficient features optimization technique for sustaining data-based decision-making systems

Feature selection using enhanced particle swarm optimisation for classification models.

In this research, we propose two Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO) variants to undertake feature selection tasks. The aim is to overcome two major shortcomings of the original PSO model, i.e., premature convergence and weak exploitation around the near optimal solutions. The first proposed PSO variant incorporates four key operations, including a modified PSO operation with rectified personal and global best signals, spiral search based local exploitation, Gaussian distribution-based swarm leader enhancement, and mirroring and mutation operations for worst solution improvement. The second proposed PSO model enhances the first one through four new strategies, i.e., an adaptive exemplar breeding mechanism incorporating multiple optimal signals, nonlinear function oriented search coefficients, exponential and scattering schemes for swarm leader, and worst solution enhancement, respectively. In comparison with a set of 15 classical and advanced search methods, the proposed models illustrate statistical superiority for discriminative feature selection for a total of 13 data sets

Filter GA Based Approach to Feature Selection for Classification

This paper presents a new approach to select reduced number of features in databases. Every database has a given number of features but it is observed that some of these features can be redundant and can be harmful as well as and can confuse the process of classification. The proposed method applies filter attribute measure and binary coded Genetic Algorithm to select a small subset of features. The importance of these features is judged by applying K-nearest neighbor (KNN) method of classification. The best reduced subset of features which has high classification accuracy on given databases is adopted. The classification accuracy obtained by proposed method is compared with that reported recently in publications on twenty eight databases. It is noted that proposed method performs satisfactory on these databases and achieves higher classification accuracy but with smaller number of features

Distribution network reconfiguration considering DGs using a hybrid CS-GWO algorithm for power loss minimization and voltage profile enhancement

This paper presents an implementation of the hybrid Cuckoo search and Grey wolf (CS-GWO) optimization algorithm for solving the problem of distribution network reconfiguration (DNR) and optimal location and sizing of distributed generations (DGs) simultaneously in radial distribution systems (RDSs). This algorithm is being used significantly to minimize the system power loss, voltage deviation at load buses and improve the voltage profile. When solving the high-dimensional datasets optimization problem using the GWO algorithm, it simply falls into an optimum local region. To enhance and strengthen the GWO algorithm searchability, CS algorithm is integrated to update the best three candidate solutions. This hybrid CS-GWO algorithm has a more substantial search capability to simultaneously find optimal candidate solutions for problem. Furthermore, to validate the effectiveness and performances of the proposed hybrid CS-GWO algorithm is being tested and evaluated for standard IEEE 33-bus and 69-bus RDSs by considering different scenarios

With the widespread application of assembly line in enterprises, assembly line scheduling is an important problem in the production since it directly affects the productivity of the whole manufacturing system. The mathematical model of assembly line scheduling problem is put forward and key data are confirmed. A double objective optimization model based on equipment utilization and delivery time loss is built, and optimization solution strategy is described. Based on the idea of solution strategy, assembly line scheduling algorithm based on CE-PSO is proposed to overcome the shortcomings of the standard PSO. Through the simulation experiments of two examples, the validity of the assembly line scheduling algorithm based on CE-PSO is proved

Component-wise analysis of metaheuristic algorithms for novel fuzzy-meta classifier

Metaheuristic research has proposed promising results in science, business, and engineering problems. But, mostly high-level analysis is performed on metaheuristic performances. This leaves several critical questions unanswered due to black-box issue that does not reveal why certain metaheuristic algorithms performed better on some problems and not on others. To address the significant gap between theory and practice in metaheuristic research, this study proposed in-depth analysis approach using component-view of metaheuristic algorithms and diversity measurement for determining exploration and exploitation abilities. This research selected three commonly used swarm-based metaheuristic algorithms – Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Artificial Bee Colony (ABC), and Cuckoo Search (CS) – to perform component-wise analysis. As a result, the study able to address premature convergence problem in PSO, poor exploitation in ABC, and imbalanced exploration and exploitation issue in CS. The proposed improved PSO (iPSO), improved ABC (iABC), and improved CS (iCS) outperformed standard algorithms and variants from existing literature, as well as, Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO) and Animal Migration Optimization (AMO) on ten numerical optimization problems with varying modalities. The proposed iPSO, iABC, and iCS were then employed on proposed novel Fuzzy-Meta Classifier (FMC) which offered highly reduced model complexity and high accuracy as compared to Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS). The proposed three-layer FMC produced efficient rules that generated nearly 100% accuracies on ten different classification datasets, with significantly reduced number of trainable parameters and number of nodes in the network architecture, as compared to ANFIS
