Path navigation using fuzzy logic controller and trajectory prediction table is to drive a robot in the dynamic environment to a target position, without collision. This path navigation method consists of static navigation method and dynamic path planning. The static navigation used to avoid the static obstacles by using fuzzy logic controller, which contains four sensor input and two output variables. If the robot detects moving obstacles, the robot can recognize the velocity and moving direction of each obstacle and generate the Trajectory Prediction Table to predict the obstacles’ future trajectory. If the trajectory prediction table which reveals that the robot will collide with an obstacle, the dynamic path planning will find a new collision free path to avoid the obstacle by waiting strategy or detouring strategy. . A lot of research work has been carried out in order to solve this problem. In order to navigate successfully in an unknown or partially known environment, the mobile robots should be able to extract the necessary surrounding information from the environment using sensor input, use their built-in knowledge for perception and to take the action required to plan a feasible path for collision free motion and to reach the goal

The thesis addresses the problem of mobile robots navigation in various cluttered environments and proposes methodologies based on a soft computing approach, concerning to three main techniques: Potential Field technique, Genetic Algorithm technique and Fuzzy Logic technique. The selected techniques along with their hybrid models, based on a mathematical support, solve the three main issues of path planning of robots such as environment representation, localization and navigation. The motivation of the thesis is based on some cutting edge issues for path planning and navigation capabilities, that retrieve the essential for various situations found in day-to-day life. For this purpose, complete algorithms are developed and analysed for standalone techniques and their hybrid models. In the potential field technique the local minima due to existence of dead cycle problem has been addressed and the possible solution for different situations has been carried out. In fuzzy logic technique the different controllers have been designed and their performance analysis has been done during their navigational control in various environments. Firstly, the fuzzy controller having all triangular members with five membership functions have been considered. Subsequently the membership functions are changed from Triangular to other functions, e.g. Trapezoidal, Gaussian functions and combinational form to have a more smooth and optimised control response. It has been found that the fuzzy controller with all Gaussian membership function works better compared to other chosen membership functions. Similarly the proposed Genetic algorithm is based on the suitable population size and fitness functions for finding out the robot steering angle in various cluttered field. At the end hybrid approaches e.g. Potential-Fuzzy, otential-Genetic, Fuzzy-Genetic and Potential-Fuzzy-Genetic are considered for navigation of multiple mobile robots. Initially the combination of two techniques has been selected in order to model the controllers and then all the techniques have been hybridized to get a better controller. These hybrid controllers are first designed and analysed for possible solutions for various situations provided by human intelligence. Then computer simulations have been executed extensively for various known and unknown environments. The proposed hybrid algorithms are embedded in the controllers of the real robots and tested in realistic scenarios to demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed controllers. Finally, the thesis concludes in a chapter describing the comparison of results acquired from various environments, showing that the developed algorithms achieve the main goals proposed by different approaches with a high level of simulations. The main contribution provided in the thesis is the definition and demonstration of the applicability of multiple mobile robots navigations with multiple targets in various environments based on the strategy of path optimisation

An eventual objective of mobile robotics research is to bestow the robot with high cerebral skill, of which navigation in an unfamiliar environment can be succeeded by using on‐line sensory information, which is essentially starved of humanoid intermediation. This research emphases on mechanical design of real mobile robot, its kinematic & dynamic model analysis and selection of AI technique based on perception, cognition, sensor fusion, path scheduling and analysis, which has to be implemented in robot for achieving integration of different preliminary robotic behaviors (e.g. obstacle avoidance, wall and edge following, escaping dead end and target seeking). Navigational paths as well as time taken during navigation by the mobile robot can be expressed as an optimization problem and thus can be analyzed and solved using AI techniques. The optimization of path as well as time taken is based on the kinematic stability and the intelligence of the robot controller. A set of linguistic fuzzy rules are developed to implement expert knowledge under various situations. Both of Mamdani and Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy model are employed in control algorithm for experimental purpose. Neural network has also been used to enhance and optimize the outcome of controller, e.g. by introducing a learning ability. The cohesive framework combining both fuzzy inference system and neural network enabled mobile robot to generate reasonable trajectories towards the target. An authenticity checking has been done by performing simulation as well as experimental results which showed that the mobile robot is capable of avoiding stationary obstacles, escaping traps, and reaching the goal efficiently

Agoraphilic navigation algorithm in dynamic environment

This thesis presents a novel Agoraphilic (free space attraction [FSA])-based navigation algorithm. This new algorithm is capable of undertaking local path planning for robot navigation in static and dynamic environments with the presence of a moving goal. The proposed algorithm eliminates the common weaknesses of the existing navigation approaches when operating in unknown dynamic environments while using the modified Agoraphilic concept. The Agoraphilic Navigation Algorithm in Dynamic Environment (ANADE) presented in this thesis does not look for obstacles (problems) to avoid; rather, it looks for free space (solutions) to follow. Therefore, this algorithm is also a human-like optimistic navigation algorithm. The proposed algorithm creates a set of Free Space Forces (FSFs) based on the current and future growing free space around the robot. These Free Space Forces are focused towards the current and future locations of a moving goal and finally generate a single attractive force. This attractive force pulls the robot through current free space towards the future growing free space leading to the goal. The new free space concept allows the ANADE to overcome many common problems of navigation algorithms. Several versions of the ANADE have been developed throughout this research to overcome the main limitation of the original Agoraphilic algorithm and address the common weaknesses of the existing navigation approaches. The ANADE I uses an object tracking method to identify the states (locations) of moving objects accurately. The ANADE II uses a dynamic obstacle prediction methodology to identify the robot’s future environments. In the ANADE III, a novel controller based on fuzzy logic was developed and combined with the new FSA concept to provide optimal navigational solutions at a low computational cost. In the ANADE III, the effectiveness of the ANADE II was further improved by incorporating the velocity vectors of the moving objects into decision-making. In the ANADE IV, a self-tuning system was successfully applied to the ANADE III to take advantage of the performances of free space attraction-based navigation algorithms. The proposed final version of the algorithm (ANADE V) comprises nine main modules. These modules are repeatedly used to create the robot’s driving force, which pulls the robot towards the goal (moving or static). An obstacle tracking module is used to identify the time-varying free spaces by tracking the moving objects. Further, a tracking system is also used to track the moving goal. The capacity of the ANADE was strengthened further by obstacle and goal path prediction modules. Future location prediction allowed the algorithm to make decisions by considering future environments around the robot. This is further supported by a self-tuning, machine learning–based controller designed to efficiently account for the inherent high uncertainties in the robot’s operational environment at a reduced computational cost. Experimental and simulation-based tests were conducted under dynamic environments to validate the algorithm. Further, the ANADE was benchmarked against other recently developed navigation algorithms. Those tests were focused on the behaviour of the algorithm under challenging environments with moving and static obstacles and goals. Further, the test results demonstrate that the ANADE is successful in navigating robots under unknown, dynamically cluttered environments.Doctor of Philosoph

In recent years, under water robots play an important role in various under water operations. There is an increase in research in this area because of the application of autonomous underwater robots in several issues like exploring under water environment and resource, doing scientific and military tasks under water. We need good maneuvering capabilities and a well precision for moving in a specified track in these applications. However, control of these under water bots become very difficult due to the highly non-linear and dynamic characteristics of the underwater world. The logical answer to this problem is the application of non-linear controllers. As neural networks (NNs) are characterized by flexibility and an aptitude for dealing with non-linear problems, they are envisaged to be beneficial when used on underwater robots. In this research our artificial intelligence system is based on neural network model for navigation of an Automated Underwater robot in unpredictable and imprecise environment. Thus the back propagation algorithm has been used for the steering analysis of the underwater robot when it is encountered by a left, right and front as well as top obstacle. After training the neural network the neural network pattern was used in the controller of the underwater robot.
