    Adaptive output feedback finite time control for a class of second order nonlinear systems

    This paper develops a finite time output feedback based control scheme for a class of nonlinear second order systems. The system representation includes both model uncertainty and uncertain parameters. A finite time parameter estimator is developed. This facilitates the design of a finite time observer based on the well-established step-by-step sliding mode observer design approach. A terminal sliding mode control scheme is then developed using the corresponding state estimates. The methodology is applied to a continuous stirred tank reactor system to validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach

    Rikitake dynamo system (1958) is a famous two-disk dynamo model that is capable of executing nonlinear chaotic oscillations similar to the chaotic oscillations as revealed by palaeomagnetic study. First, we detail the Rikitake dynamo system, its signal plots and important dynamic properties. Then a circuit design using Multisim is carried out for the Rikitake dynamo system. New synchronous quasi-sliding mode control (QSMC) for Rikitake chaotic system is studied in this paper. Furthermore, the selection on switching surface and the existence of QSMC scheme is also designed in this paper. The efficiency of the QSMC scheme is illustrated with MATLAB plots

    Decentralized sliding mode control and estimation for large-scale systems

    This thesis concerns the development of an approach of decentralised robust control and estimation for large scale systems (LSSs) using robust sliding mode control (SMC) and sliding mode observers (SMO) theory based on a linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach. A complete theory of decentralized first order sliding mode theory is developed. The main developments proposed in this thesis are: The novel development of an LMI approach to decentralized state feedback SMC. The proposed strategy has good ability in combination with other robust methods to fulfill specific performance and robustness requirements. The development of output based SMC for large scale systems (LSSs). Three types of novel decentralized output feedback SMC methods have been developed using LMI design tools. In contrast to more conventional approaches to SMC design the use of some complicated transformations have been obviated. A decentralized approach to SMO theory has been developed focused on the Walcott-Żak SMO combined with LMI tools. A derivation for bounds applicable to the estimation error for decentralized systems has been given that involves unknown subsystem interactions and modeling uncertainty. Strategies for both actuator and sensor fault estimation using decentralized SMO are discussed.The thesis also provides a case study of the SMC and SMO concepts applied to a non-linear annealing furnace system modelderived from a distributed parameter (partial differential equation) thermal system. The study commences with a lumped system decentralised representation of the furnace derived from the partial differential equations. The SMO and SMC methods derived in the thesis are applied to this lumped parameter furnace model. Results are given demonstrating the validity of the methods proposed and showing a good potential for a valuable practical implementation of fault tolerant control based on furnace temperature sensor faults

    Robust Nonlinear Tracking Control for Unmanned Aircraft in the Presence of Wake Vortex

    The flight trajectory of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can be significantly affected by external disturbances such as turbulence, upstream wake vortices, or wind gusts. These effects present challenges for UAV flight safety. Hence, addressing these challenges is of critical importance for the integration of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) into the National Airspace System (NAS), especially in terminal zones. This work presents a robust nonlinear control method that has been designed to achieve roll/yaw regulation in the presence of unmodeled external disturbances and system nonlinearities. The data from NASA-conducted airport experimental measurements as well as high-fidelity Large Eddy Simulations of the wake vortex are used in the study. These simulations are focused on applications involving small UAV affected by the wake vortex disturbance in the vicinity of the ground (which models the take-off or landing phase) as well as in the out-of-ground zone. The results demonstrate the capability of the proposed nonlinear controller to asymptotically reject wake vortex disturbance in the presence of the nonlinearities in the system (i.e., parametric variations, unmodeled, time-varying disturbances). Further, the nonlinear controller is designed with a computationally efficient structure without the need for the complex calculations or function approximators in the control loop. Such a structure is motivated by UAV applications where onboard computational resources are limited

    Decoupled Fractional Super-Twisting Stabilization of Interconnected Mobile Robot Under Harsh Terrain Conditions

    The four-wheel omnidirectional mobile robot usually suffers disturbed or unstable lateral motion under harsh terrain conditions (such as uneven or oiled ground). Generally for such a challenging situation, the lumped disturbances and interconnected states render available coupling solutions difficult to achieve demand-satisfied performance. This paper proposes a novel decoupled fractional super-twisting sliding mode control (FST-SMC) method by (i) constructing an inverse system-based decoupling to form a pseudolinear composition system; (ii) presenting an enhanced nominal sliding law for chattering mitigation and (iii) designing an unbiased multi-layer fuzzy estimator with gain-learning capacity to compensate for the lumped disturbances actively. Given that the identified disturbances can be directly reflected in the FST-SMC law, this method guarantees an accurate and robust control without causing gain overestimation. Theoretical analysis is offered to verify the asymptotic stability. Under harsh terrain conditions, experimental results validate the effectiveness of the proposed FST-SMC method

    Finite-Time Output Feedback Controller Based on Observer for the Time-Varying Delayed Systems: A Moore-Penrose Inverse Approach

    This study proposes a novel variable structure control (VSC) for the mismatched uncertain systems with unknown time-varying delay. The novel VSC includes the finite-time convergence sliding mode, invariance property, asymptotic stability, and measured output only. A necessary and sufficient condition guaranteeing the existence of sliding surface is given. A novel lemma is established to deal with the control design problem for a wider class of time-delay systems. A suitable reduced-order observer (ROO) is constructed to estimate unmeasured state variables of the systems. A novel finite-time output feedback controller (FTOFC) is investigated, which is based on the ROO tool and the Moore-Penrose inverse technique. Moreover, with the help of this lemma and the proposed FTOFC, restrictions on most existing works are also eliminated. In addition, an asymptotic stability analysis is implemented by means of the feasibility of the linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) and given desirable sliding mode dynamics. Finally, a MATLAB simulation result on a numerical example is performed to show the effectiveness and advantage of the proposed method
