    Model-based comparison of hybrid propulsion systems for railway diesel multiple units

    In order to reduce operating costs, railway vehicle operators need to find technical solutions to improve the efficiency of railway diesel multiple units on non-electrified railway routes. This can be achieved by hybridization of diesel multiple unit propulsion systems with electrical energy storage systems to enable brake energy recuperation. After highlighting the state of the art of hybrid railway vehicles and electrical energy storage systems, a simulation model of a generic diesel multiple unit in a 3-car formation is developed and equipped with three types of hybrid power transmissions. Simulations on realistic service profiles with different driving strategies show the potential for fuel consumption reduction for the different transmission types. On a suburban service profile, a 3-car diesel multiple unit is able to achieve simulated fuel savings of up to 24.1% and up to 18.9% on a regional service profile

    This paper presents the use of track condition data from the virtual remote wireless sensor network within a simulation model of a battery-hybrid diesel-electric locomotive-driven freight train for a realistic mountain railway route simulation scenario. Simulation model includes the point-mass model of freight train longitudinal motion dynamics subject to wheel-to-track adhesion and head wind variations, the model of hybrid diesel-electric locomotive energy efficiency, and the model of real-time information provide to the virtual train driver about railway track conditions based on a narrow-band wireless remote sensor network. Simulation results are used to assess the possible benefits remote wireless sensor data for freight train energy-optimal control and to increase the transportation safety, including prediction of possible delays due to changed weather conditions en route

    Advanced methodology for the optimal sizing of the energy storage system in a hybrid electric refuse collector vehicle using real routes

    This paper presents a new methodology for optimal sizing of the energy storage system ( ESS ), with the aim of being used in the design process of a hybrid electric (HE) refuse collector vehicle ( RCV ). This methodology has, as the main element, to model a multi-objective optimisation problem that considers the specific energy of a basic cell of lithium polymer ( Li – Po ) battery and the cost of manufacture. Furthermore, optimal space solutions are determined from a multi-objective genetic algorithm that considers linear inequalities and limits in the decision variables. Subsequently, it is proposed to employ optimal space solutions for sizing the energy storage system, based on the energy required by the drive cycle of a conventional refuse collector vehicle. In addition, it is proposed to discard elements of optimal space solutions for sizing the energy storage system so as to achieve the highest fuel economy in the hybrid electric refuse collector vehicle design phase.Postprint (published version

    This book is a collection of papers covering various aspects of the optimal control of power and energy production from renewable resources (wind, PV, biomass, hydrogen, etc.). In particular, attention is focused both on the optimal control of new technologies and on their integration in buildings, microgrids, and energy markets.     Applications of Genetic Algorithm and Its Variants in Rail Vehicle Systems: A Bibliometric Analysis and Comprehensive Review

    Railway systems are time-varying and complex systems with nonlinear behaviors that require effective optimization techniques to achieve optimal performance. Evolutionary algorithms methods have emerged as a popular optimization technique in recent years due to their ability to handle complex, multi-objective issues of such systems. In this context, genetic algorithm (GA) as one of the powerful optimization techniques has been extensively used in the railway sector, and applied to various problems such as scheduling, routing, forecasting, design, maintenance, and allocation. This paper presents a review of the applications of GAs and their variants in the railway domain together with bibliometric analysis. The paper covers highly cited and recent studies that have employed GAs in the railway sector and discuss the challenges and opportunities of using GAs in railway optimization problems. Meanwhile, the most popular hybrid GAs as the combination of GA and other evolutionary algorithms methods such as particle swarm optimization (PSO), ant colony optimization (ACO), neural network (NN), fuzzy-logic control, etc with their dedicated application in the railway domain are discussed too. More than 250 publications are listed and classified to provide a comprehensive analysis and road map for experts and researchers in the field helping them to identify research gaps and opportunities

    Flywheel Energy Storage Systems for Rail

    In current non-electrified rail systems there is a significant loss of energy during vehicle braking. The aim of this research has been to investigate the potential benefits of introducing onboard regenerative braking systems to rail vehicles. An overview of energy saving measures proposed within the rail industry is presented along with a review of different energy storage devices and systems developed for both rail and automotive applications. Advanced flywheels have been identified as a candidate energy storage device for rail applications, combining high specific power and energy. In order to assess the potential benefits of energy storage systems in rail vehicles, a computational model of a conventional regional diesel train has been developed. This has been used to define a base level of vehicle performance, and to investigate the effects of energy efficient control strategies focussing on the application of coasting prior to braking. The impact of these measures on both the requirements of an energy storage system and the potential benefits of a hybrid train have been assessed. A detailed study of a range of existing and novel mechanical flywheel transmissions has been performed. The interaction between the flywheel, transmission and vehicle is investigated using a novel application-independent analysis method which has been developed to characterise and compare the performance of different systems. The results of this analysis produce general ‘design tools’ for each flywheel transmission configuration, allowing appropriate system configurations and parameters to be identified for a particular application. More detailed computational models of the best performing systems have been developed and integrated with the conventional regional diesel train model. The performance of proposed flywheel hybrid regional trains has been assessed using realistic component losses and journey profiles, and the fuel saving relative to a conventional train quantified for a range of energy storage capacities and power-train control strategies

Por una parte, se propone unainnovadora estrategia energética, basada en lógica difusa, para gestionar la división de la demanda depotencia entre las fuentes de energía disponibles a bordo del vehículo. La estrategia adaptativa que sepropone evalúa la información energética actual y futura (estimada) para adaptar, de una formaoptimizada y eficiente, la operación del sistema con el objetivo de mejorar el aprovechamiento de laenergía almacenada en los recursos a bordo del vehículo.Por otro lado, se ha propuesto una metodología para la co-optimización de la estrategia de gestión ydimensionamiento del HESS. Esta metodología de optimización evalúa tanto técnica comoeconómicamente las posibles soluciones mediante un problema multi-objetivo basado en algoritmosgenéticos.     A review on power electronics technologies for electric mobility

    Concerns about greenhouse gas emissions are a key topic addressed by modern societies worldwide. As a contribution to mitigate such effects caused by the transportation sector, the full adoption of electric mobility is increasingly being seen as the main alternative to conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, which is supported by positive industry indicators, despite some identified hurdles. For such objective, power electronics technologies play an essential role and can be contextualized in different purposes to support the full adoption of electric mobility, including on-board and off-board battery charging systems, inductive wireless charging systems, unified traction and charging systems, new topologies with innovative operation modes for supporting the electrical power grid, and innovative solutions for electrified railways. Embracing all of these aspects, this paper presents a review on power electronics technologies for electric mobility where some of the main technologies and power electronics topologies are presented and explained.     Investigation of Novel Displacement-Controlled Hydraulic Architectures for Railway Construction and Maintenance Machines

    This dissertation aims at showing how to transform hydraulic systems of railway multi-actuator machinery characterized by inefficient state-of-the-art systems into the 21st Century. Designing machines that are highly efficient, productive, reliable, and cost affordable represents the target of this research. In this regard, migrating from valve-controlled architectures to displacement-controlled layouts is the proper answer. Displacement-controlled systems remove the losses generated by flow throttling typical of conventional circuits, allow an easy implementation of energy recovery (e.g. during regenerative braking), and create the possibility for the use of hybrid systems capable of maximizing the downsizing of the combustion engine. One portion of the dissertation focuses on efficient propulsion systems suitable for railway construction and maintenance machines. Two non-hybrid architectures are first proposed, i.e. a novel layout grounded on two independent hydrostatic transmissions (HSTs) and two secondary controlled hydraulic motors (SCHMs) connected in parallel. Three suitable control strategies are developed according to the specific requirements for railway machines and dedicated controllers are implemented. Detailed analyses are conducted via high-fidelity virtual simulations involving accurate modeling of the rail/wheel interface. The performance of the propulsion systems is proven by acceptable velocity tracking, accurate stopping position, achieving regenerative braking, and the expected behavior of the slip coefficients on both axles. Energy efficiency is the main emphasis during representative working cycles, which shows that the independent HSTs are more efficient. They consume 6.6% less energy than the SCHMs working with variable-pressure and 12.8% less energy than the SCHMs controlled with constant-pressure. Additionally, two alternative hybrid propulsion systems are proposed and investigated. These architectures enable a 35% reduction of the baseline machine’s rated engine power without modifying the working hydraulics. Concerning the working hydraulics, the focus is to extend displacement-controlled technology to specific functions on railway construction and maintenance machines. Two specific examples of complete hydraulic circuits for the next generation tamper-liners are proposed. In particular, an innovative approach used to drive displacement-controlled dual function squeeze actuators is presented, implemented, and experimentally validated. This approach combines two functions into a unique actuator, namely squeezing the ballast and vibrating the tamping tools of the work-heads. This results in many advantages, such as variable amplitude and variable frequency of the tamping tools’ vibration, improved reliability of the tamping process, and energy efficient actuation. A motion of the squeeze actuator characterized by a vibration up to 45 Hz, i.e. the frequency used in state-of-the-art systems, is experimentally confirmed. In conclusion, this dissertation demonstrates that displacement-controlled actuation represents the correct solution for next-generation railway construction and maintenance machines
