Expert systems and finite element structural analysis - a review
Finite element analysis of many engineering systems is practised more as an art than as a science . It involves high level expertise (analytical as well as heuristic) regarding problem modelling (e .g. problem specification,13; choosing the appropriate type of elements etc .), optical mesh design for achieving the specified accuracy (e .g . initial mesh selection, adaptive mesh refinement), selection of the appropriate type of analysis and solution13; routines and, finally, diagnosis of the finite element solutions . Very often such expertise is highly dispersed and is not available at a single place with a single expert. The design of an expert system, such that the necessary expertise is available to a novice to perform the same job even in the absence of trained experts, becomes an attractive proposition. 13; In this paper, the areas of finite element structural analysis which require experience and decision-making capabilities are explored . A simple expert system, with a feasible knowledge base for problem modelling, optimal mesh design, type of analysis and solution routines, and diagnosis, is outlined. Several efforts in these directions, reported in the open literature, are also reviewed in this paper
Integrated design optimization research and development in an industrial environment
An overview is given of a design optimization project that is in progress at the GE Research and Development Center for the past few years. The objective of this project is to develop a methodology and a software system for design automation and optimization of structural/mechanical components and systems. The effort focuses on research and development issues and also on optimization applications that can be related to real-life industrial design problems. The overall technical approach is based on integration of numerical optimization techniques, finite element methods, CAE and software engineering, and artificial intelligence/expert systems (AI/ES) concepts. The role of each of these engineering technologies in the development of a unified design methodology is illustrated. A software system DESIGN-OPT has been developed for both size and shape optimization of structural components subjected to static as well as dynamic loadings. By integrating this software with an automatic mesh generator, a geometric modeler and an attribute specification computer code, a software module SHAPE-OPT has been developed for shape optimization. Details of these software packages together with their applications to some 2- and 3-dimensional design problems are described

A computationally-efficient numerical model to characterize the noise behavior of metal-framed walls
Architects, designers, and engineers are making great efforts to design acoustically-efficient metal-framed walls, minimizing acoustic bridging. Therefore, efficient simulation models to predict the acoustic insulation complying with ISO 10140 are needed at a design stage. In order to achieve this, a numerical model consisting of two fluid-filled reverberation chambers, partitioned using a metal-framed wall, is to be simulated at one-third-octaves. This produces a large simulation model consisting of several millions of nodes and elements. Therefore, efficient meshing procedures are necessary to obtain better solution times and to effectively utilise computational resources. Such models should also demonstrate effective Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) along with acoustic-fluid coupling to simulate a realistic scenario. In this contribution, the development of a finite element frequency-dependent mesh model that can characterize the sound insulation of metal-framed walls is presented. Preliminary results on the application of the proposed model to study the geometric contribution of stud frames on the overall acoustic performance of metal-framed walls are also presented. It is considered that the presented numerical model can be used to effectively visualize the noise behaviour of advanced materials and multi-material structures
Numerical modelling and simulation in sheet metal forming
The application of numerical modelling and simulation in manufacturing technologies is looking back over about a 20â30 years history. In recent years, the role of modelling and simulation in engineering and in manufacturing industry has been continuously increasing. It is well known that during manufacturing processes simultaneous the effect of many different parameters can be observed. This is the reason why in former years, detailed analysis of manufacturing processes could have been done only by time-consuming and expensive trial-and-error methods. Due to the recent developments in the methods of modelling and simulation, as well as in computational facilities, modelling and simulation has become an everyday tool in engineering practice. Besides the aforementioned facts, the emerging role of modelling and simulation can also be explained by the growing globalisation and competition of the world market requiring shorter lead times and more cost effective solutions. In spite the enormous development of hardware and software facilities, the exclusive use of numerical modelling still seems to be very time- and cost consuming, and there is still often a high scepticism about the results among industrialists. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to overview the present situation of numerical modelling and simulation in sheet metal forming, mainly from the viewpoint of scientific research and industrial applications
Domain knowledge specification for energy tuning
To overcome the challenges of energy consumption of HPC systems, the European Union Horizon 2020 READEX (Runtime Exploitation of Application Dynamism for Energy-efficient Exascale computing) project uses an online auto-tuning approach to improve energy efficiency of HPC applications. The READEX methodology pre-computes optimal system configurations at design-time, such as the CPU frequency, for instances of program regions and switches at runtime to the configuration given in the tuning model when the region is executed. READEX goes beyond previous approaches by exploiting dynamic changes of a region's characteristics by leveraging region and characteristic specific system configurations. While the tool suite supports an automatic approach, specifying domain knowledge such as the structure and characteristics of the application and application tuning parameters can significantly help to create a more refined tuning model. This paper presents the means available for an application expert to provide domain knowledge and presents tuning results for some benchmarks.Web of Science316art. no. E465
Using polyhedral models to automatically sketch idealized geometry for structural analysis
Simplification of polyhedral models, which may incorporate large numbers of faces and nodes, is often required to reduce their amount of data, to allow their efficient manipulation, and to speed up computation. Such a simplification process must be adapted to the use of the resulting polyhedral model. Several applications require simplified shapes which have the same topology as the original model (e.g. reverse engineering, medical applications, etc.). Nevertheless, in the fields of structural analysis and computer visualization, for example, several adaptations and idealizations of the initial geometry are often necessary. To this end, within this paper a new approach is proposed to simplify an initial manifold or non-manifold polyhedral model with respect to bounded errors specified by the user, or set up, for example, from a preliminary F.E. analysis. The topological changes which may occur during a simplification because of the bounded error (or tolerance) values specified are performed using specific curvature and topological criteria and operators. Moreover, topological changes, whether or not they kept the manifold of the object, are managed simultaneously with the geometric operations of the simplification process
Recent Achievements in Numerical Simulation in Sheet Metal Forming Processes
Purpose of this paper: During the recent 10-15 years, Computer Aided Process Planning and Die Design evolved as one of the most
important engineering tools in sheet metal forming, particularly in the automotive industry. This emerging role is strongly emphasized by
the rapid development of Finite Element Modelling, as well. The purpose of this paper is to give a general overview about the recent
achievements in this very important field of sheet metal forming and to introduce some special results in this development activity.
Design/methodology/approach: Concerning the CAE activities in sheet metal forming, there are two main approaches: one of them may
be regarded as knowledge based process planning, whilst the other as simulation based process planning. The author attempts to integrate
these two separate developments in knowledge and simulation based approach by linking commercial CAD and FEM systems.
Findings: Applying the above approach a more powerful and efficient process planning and die design solution can be achieved radically
reducing the time and cost of product development cycle and improving product quality.
Research limitations: Due to the different modelling approaches in CAD and FEM systems, the biggest challenge is to enhance the
robustness of data exchange capabilities between various systems to provide an even more streamlined information flow.
Practical implications: The proposed integrated solutions have great practical importance to improve the global competitiveness of sheet
metal forming in the very important segment of industry.
Originality/value: The concept described in this paper may have specific value both for process planning and die design engineers
