    Ranking and Retrieval under Semantic Relevance

    This thesis presents a series of conceptual and empirical developments on the ranking and retrieval of candidates under semantic relevance. Part I of the thesis introduces the concept of uncertainty in various semantic tasks (such as recognizing textual entailment) in natural language processing, and the machine learning techniques commonly employed to model these semantic phenomena. A unified view of ranking and retrieval will be presented, and the trade-off between model expressiveness, performance, and scalability in model design will be discussed. Part II of the thesis focuses on applying these ranking and retrieval techniques to text: Chapter 3 examines the feasibility of ranking hypotheses given a premise with respect to a human's subjective probability of the hypothesis happening, effectively extending the traditional categorical task of natural language inference. Chapter 4 focuses on detecting situation frames for documents using ranking methods. Then we extend the ranking notion to retrieval, and develop both sparse (Chapter 5) and dense (Chapter 6) vector-based methods to facilitate scalable retrieval for potential answer paragraphs in question answering. Part III turns the focus to mentions and entities in text, while continuing the theme on ranking and retrieval: Chapter 7 discusses the ranking of fine-grained types that an entity mention could belong to, leading to state-of-the-art performance on hierarchical multi-label fine-grained entity typing. Chapter 8 extends the semantic relation of coreference to a cross-document setting, enabling models to retrieve from a large corpus, instead of in a single document, when resolving coreferent entity mentions

    Representation Learning for Natural Language Processing

    This open access book provides an overview of the recent advances in representation learning theory, algorithms and applications for natural language processing (NLP). It is divided into three parts. Part I presents the representation learning techniques for multiple language entries, including words, phrases, sentences and documents. Part II then introduces the representation techniques for those objects that are closely related to NLP, including entity-based world knowledge, sememe-based linguistic knowledge, networks, and cross-modal entries. Lastly, Part III provides open resource tools for representation learning techniques, and discusses the remaining challenges and future research directions.     Fine-Grained Named Entity Typing over Distantly Supervised Data via Refinement in Hyperbolic Space

    Fine-Grained Named Entity Typing (FG-NET) aims at classifying the entity mentions into a wide range of entity types (usually hundreds) depending upon the context. While distant supervision is the most common way to acquire supervised training data, it brings in label noise, as it assigns type labels to the entity mentions irrespective of mentions' context. In attempts to deal with the label noise, leading research on the FG-NET assumes that the fine-grained entity typing data possesses a euclidean nature, which restraints the ability of the existing models in combating the label noise. Given the fact that the fine-grained type hierarchy exhibits a hierarchal structure, it makes hyperbolic space a natural choice to model the FG-NET data. In this research, we propose FGNET-HR, a novel framework that benefits from the hyperbolic geometry in combination with the graph structures to perform entity typing in a performance-enhanced fashion. FGNET-HR initially uses LSTM networks to encode the mention in relation with its context, later it forms a graph to distill/refine the mention's encodings in the hyperbolic space. Finally, the refined mention encoding is used for entity typing. Experimentation using different benchmark datasets shows that FGNET-HR improves the performance on FG-NET by up to 3.5% in terms of strict accuracy

    Supporting lay users in privacy decisions when sharing sensitive data

    The first part of the thesis focuses on assisting users in choosing their privacy settings, by using machine learning to derive the optimal set of privacy settings for the user. In contrast to other work, our approach uses context factors as well as individual factors to provide a personalized set of privacy settings. The second part consists of a set of intelligent user interfaces to assist the users throughout the complete privacy journey, from defining friend groups that allow targeted information sharing; through user interfaces for selecting information recipients, to find possible errors or unusual settings, and to refine them; up to mechanisms to gather in-situ feedback on privacy incidents, and investigating how to use these to improve a user’s privacy in the future. Our studies have shown that including tailoring the privacy settings significantly increases the correctness of the predicted privacy settings; whereas the user interfaces have been shown to significantly decrease the amount of unwanted disclosures.Insbesondere nach den jüngsten Datenschutzskandalen in sozialen Netzwerken wird der Datenschutz für Benutzer immer wichtiger. Obwohl die meisten Benutzer behaupten Wert auf Datenschutz zu legen, verhalten sie sich online allerdings völlig anders: Sie lassen die meisten Datenschutzeinstellungen der online genutzten Dienste, wie z. B. von sozialen Netzwerken oder Diensten zur Standortfreigabe, unberührt und passen sie nicht an ihre Datenschutzanforderungen an. In dieser Arbeit werde ich einen Ansatz zur Lösung dieses Problems vorstellen, der auf zwei verschiedenen Säulen basiert. Der erste Teil konzentriert sich darauf, Benutzer bei der Auswahl ihrer Datenschutzeinstellungen zu unterstützen, indem maschinelles Lernen verwendet wird, um die optimalen Datenschutzeinstellungen für den Benutzer abzuleiten. Im Gegensatz zu anderen Arbeiten verwendet unser Ansatz Kontextfaktoren sowie individuelle Faktoren, um personalisierte Datenschutzeinstellungen zu generieren. Der zweite Teil besteht aus einer Reihe intelligenter Benutzeroberflächen, die die Benutzer in verschiedene Datenschutzszenarien unterstützen. Dies beginnt bei einer Oberfläche zur Definition von Freundesgruppen, die im Anschluss genutzt werden können um einen gezielten Informationsaustausch zu ermöglichen, bspw. in sozialen Netzwerken; über Benutzeroberflächen um die Empfänger von privaten Daten auszuwählen oder mögliche Fehler oder ungewöhnliche Datenschutzeinstellungen zu finden und zu verfeinern; bis hin zu Mechanismen, um In-Situ- Feedback zu Datenschutzverletzungen zum Zeitpunkt ihrer Entstehung zu sammeln und zu untersuchen, wie diese verwendet werden können, um die Privatsphäreeinstellungen eines Benutzers anzupassen.     A complex systems approach to education in Switzerland

    The insights gained from the study of complex systems in biological, social, and engineered systems enables us not only to observe and understand, but also to actively design systems which will be capable of successfully coping with complex and dynamically changing situations. The methods and mindset required for this approach have been applied to educational systems with their diverse levels of scale and complexity. Based on the general case made by Yaneer Bar-Yam, this paper applies the complex systems approach to the educational system in Switzerland. It confirms that the complex systems approach is valid. Indeed, many recommendations made for the general case have already been implemented in the Swiss education system. To address existing problems and difficulties, further steps are recommended. This paper contributes to the further establishment complex systems approach by shedding light on an area which concerns us all, which is a frequent topic of discussion and dispute among politicians and the public, where billions of dollars have been spent without achieving the desired results, and where it is difficult to directly derive consequences from actions taken. The analysis of the education system's different levels, their complexity and scale will clarify how such a dynamic system should be approached, and how it can be guided towards the desired performance

Thousands of pages had been published about Tahiti and its neighboring islands when Orsmond uttered his judgment, and tens of thousands have been published since that time, but a unified, comprehensive, and detailed description of the pre-European ways of life of the inhabitants of those Islands is yet to appear in print. The present work, lengthy as it is, makes no such claim to comprehensiveness; rather, it is concerned mainly with the social relations of those inhabitants, and it serves up only enough about their technology, their religion, their aesthetic expressions, and so forth to place descriptions of their social relations in context and render them more comprehensible. Volumes 1 and 2 of this work are a reconstruction of the Islanders’ way of life as it was believed to have been just before it began to be transformed by European influence—a period labeled the Late Indigenous Era. Volume 3 covers events in Tahiti and Mo‘orea from about 1767 to 1815—a period labeled the Early European Era
