    The probabilistic travelling salesman problem with crowdsourcing

    We study a variant of the Probabilistic Travelling Salesman Problem arising when retailers crowdsource last-mile deliveries to their own customers, who can refuse or accept in exchange for a reward. A planner must identify which deliveries to offer, knowing that all deliveries need fulfilment, either via crowdsourcing or using the retailer’s own vehicle. We formalise the problem and position it in both the literature about crowdsourcing and among routing problems in which not all customers need a visit. We show that to evaluate the objective function of this stochastic problem for even one solution, one needs to solve an exponential number of Travelling Salesman Problems. To address this complexity, we propose Machine Learning and Monte Carlo simulation methods to approximate the objective function, and both a branch-and-bound algorithm and heuristics to reduce the number of evaluations. We show that these approaches work well on small size instances and derive managerial insights on the economic and environmental benefits of crowdsourcing to customers.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Exact solutions to a class of stochastic generalized assignment problems

    This paper deals with a stochastic Generalized Assignment Problem with recourse. Only a random subset of the given set of jobs will require to be actually processed. An assignment of each job to an agent is decided a priori, and once the demands are known, reassignments can be performed if there are overloaded agents. We construct a convex approximation of the objective function that is sharp at all feasible solutions. We then present three versions of an exact algorithm to solve this problem, based on branch and bound techniques, optimality cuts, and a special purpose lower bound. numerical results are reported.

    A Guided Neighborhood Search Applied to the Split Delivery Vehicle Routing Problem

    The classic vehicle routing problem considers the distribution of goods to geographically scattered customers from a central depot using a homogeneous fleet of vehicles with finite capacity. Each customer has a known demand and can be visited by exactly one vehicle. Each vehicle services the assigned customers in such a way that all customers are fully supplied and the total service does not exceed the vehicle capacity. In the split delivery vehicle routing problem, a customer can be visited by more than one vehicle, i.e., a customer demand can be split between various vehicles. Allowing split deliveries has been proven to potentially reduce the operational costs of the fleet. This study efficiently solves the split delivery vehicle routing problem using three new approaches. In the first approach, the problem is solved in two stages. During the first stage, an initial solution is found by means of a greedy approach that can produce high quality solutions comparable to those obtained with existing sophisticated approaches. The greedy approach is based on a novel concept called the route angle control measure that helps to produce spatially thin routes and avoids crossing routes. In the second stage, this constructive approach is extended to an iterative approach using adaptive memory concepts, and then a variable neighborhood descent process is added to improve the solution obtained. A new solution diversification scheme is presented in the second approach based on concentric rings centered at the depot that partitions the original problem. The resulting sub-problems are then solved using the greedy approach with route angle control measures. Different ring settings produce varied partitions and thus different solutions to the original problem are obtained and improved via a variable neighborhood descent. The third approach is a learning procedure based on a set or population of solutions. Those solutions are used to find attractive attributes and construct new solutions within a tabu search framework. As the search progresses, the existing population evolves, better solutions are included in it whereas bad solutions are removed from it. The initial set is constructed using the greedy approach with the route angle control measure whereas new solutions are created using an adaptation of the well known savings algorithm of Clarke and Wright (1964) and improved by means of an enhanced version of the variable neighborhood descent process. The proposed approaches are tested on benchmark instances and results are compared with existing implementations

    A Group Theoretic Tabu Search Methodology for Solving the Theater Distribution Vehicle Routing and Scheduling Problem

    The application of Group Theory to Tabu Search is a new and exciting field of research. This dissertation applies and extends some of Colletti\u27s (1999) seminal work in group theory and metaheuristics in order to solve the theater distribution vehicle routing and scheduling problem (TDVRSP). This research produced a robust, efficient, effective and flexible generalized theater distribution model that prescribes the routing and scheduling of multi-modal theater transportation assets to provide economically efficient time definite delivery of cargo to customers. In doing so, advances are provided in the field of group theoretic tabu search and its application to difficult combinatorial optimization problems, e.g., the multiple trip multiple services vehicle routing and scheduling problem with hubs and other defining constraints

    OPTIMIZATION OF RAILWAY TRANSPORTATION HAZMATS AND REGULAR COMMODITIES

    Transportation of dangerous goods has been receiving more attention in the realm of academic and scientific research during the last few decades as countries have been increasingly becoming industrialized throughout the world, thereby making Hazmats an integral part of our life style. However, the number of scholarly articles in this field is not as many as those of other areas in SCM. Considering the low-probability-and-high-consequence (LPHC) essence of transportation of Hazmats, on the one hand, and immense volume of shipments accounting for more than hundred tons in North America and Europe, on the other, we can safely state that the number of scholarly articles and dissertations have not been proportional to the significance of the subject of interest. On this ground, we conducted our research to contribute towards further developing the domain of Hazmats transportation, and sustainable supply chain management (SSCM), in general terms. Transportation of Hazmats, from logistical standpoint, may include all modes of transport via air, marine, road and rail, as well as intermodal transportation systems. Although road shipment is predominant in most of the literature, railway transportation of Hazmats has proven to be a potentially significant means of transporting dangerous goods with respect to both economies of scale and risk of transportation; these factors, have not just given rise to more thoroughly investigation of intermodal transportation of Hazmats using road and rail networks, but has encouraged the competition between rail and road companies which may indeed have some inherent advantages compared to the other medium due to their infrastructural and technological backgrounds. Truck shipment has ostensibly proven to be providing more flexibility; trains, per contra, provide more reliability in terms of transport risk for conveying Hazmats in bulks. In this thesis, in consonance with the aforementioned motivation, we provide an introduction into the hazardous commodities shipment through rail network in the first chapter of the thesis. Providing relevant statistics on the volume of Hazmat goods, number of accidents, rate of incidents, and rate of fatalities and injuries due to the incidents involving Hazmats, will shed light onto the significance of the topic under study. As well, we review the most pertinent articles while putting more emphasis on the state-of-the-art papers, in chapter two. Following the discussion in chapter 3 and looking at the problem from carrier company’s perspective, a mixed integer quadratically constraint problem (MIQCP) is developed which seeks for the minimization of transportation cost under a set of constraints including those associating with Hazmats. Due to the complexity of the problem, the risk function has been piecewise linearized using a set of auxiliary variables, thereby resulting in an MIP problem. Further, considering the interests of both carrier companies and regulatory agencies, which are minimization of cost and risk, respectively, a multiobjective MINLP model is developed, which has been reduced to an MILP through piecewise linearization of the risk term in the objective function. For both single-objective and multiobjective formulations, model variants with bifurcated and nonbifurcated flows have been presented. Then, in chapter 4, we carry out experiments considering two main cases where the first case presents smaller instances of the problem and the second case focuses on a larger instance of the problem. Eventually, in chapter five, we conclude the dissertation with a summary of the overall discussion as well as presenting some comments on avenues of future work

    Learning bounded optimal behavior using Markov decision processes

A rational agent is one that takes, at each point in time, the optimal action such that its expected utility is maximized. However, to determine the optimal action the agent may need to engage in lengthy deliberations or computations. The effect of computation is generally not explicitly considered when performing deliberations. In reality, spending too much time in deliberation may yield high quality plans that do not satisfy the natural timing constraints of a problem, making them effectively useless. Enforcing shortened deliberation times may yield timely plans, but these may be of diminished utility. These two cases suggest the possibility of optimizing an agent's deliberation process. This thesis proposes a framework for generating meta level controllers that select computational actions to perform by optimally trading off their benefit against their costs. The metalevel optimization problem is posed within a Markov Decision Process framework and is solved off-line to determine a policy for carrying out computations. Once the optimal policy is determined, it serves efficiently as an online metalevel controller that selects computational actions conditioned upon the current state of computation. Solving for the exact policy of the metalevel optimization problem becomes computationally intractable with problem size. A learning approach that takes advantage of the problem structure is proposed to generate approximate policies that are shown to perform relatively well in comparison to optimal policies. Metalevel policies are generated for two types of problem scenarios, distinguished by the representation of the cost of computation. In the first case, the cost of computation is explicitly defined as part of the problem description. In the second case, it is implicit in the timing constraints of problem.     A mobile ammunition distribution system design on the battlefield

In this dissertation we study a military logistics problem in which ammunition requirements of the combat units, which are located on the battle- field, are to be satisfied in the right amount when and where they are needed. Our main objective is to provide a decision support tool that can help plan ammunition distribution on the battlefield. We demonstrate through an extensive literature review that the existing models are not capable of handling the specifics of our problem. Hence, we propose a mathematical programming model considering arc-based product-flow with O(n 4 ) decision variables and constraints. The model is a three-layer commodity-flow location routing formulation that distributes multiple products, respects hard time windows, allows demand points to be supplied by more than one vehicle or depot, and locates facilities at two different layers. We then develop a new mathematical programming model with only O(n 3 ) decision variables and constraints by considering node-based product-flow. We derive several valid inequalities to speed up the solution time of our models, illustrate the performance of the models in several realistically sized scenarios, and report encouraging results. Based on these mathematical models we propose two three-phase heuristic methods: a routing-first location-second and a location- first routing-second heuristic. The computational results show that complex real world problems can effectively be solved in reasonable times with the proposed heuristics. Finally, we introduce a dynamic model that designs the distribution system in consecutive time periods for the entire combat duration, and show how the static model can be utilized in dynamic environments.Toyoğlu, HünkarPh.D
