A Simple Approach of Space-vector Pulse Width Modulation Realization Based on Field Programmable Gate Array

Employing a field programmable gate array to realize space-vector pulse width modulation is a solution to boost system performance. Although there is much literature in the application of three-phase space-vector pulse width modulation based on field programmable gate arrays, most is on conventional space-vector pulse width modulation with designs that are complicated. This article will present a simple approach to realize five-segment discontinuous space-vector pulse width modulation based on a field programmable gate array, in which the judging of sectors and the calculation of the firing time are simpler with fewer switching losses. The proposed space-vector pulse width modulation has been successfully designed and implemented to drive on a three-phase inverter system that is loaded by an induction machine of 1.5 kW using the APEX20KE Altera field programmable gate array (Altera Corporation, San Jose, California, USA)

A field programmable gate array based modular motion control platform

The expectations from motion control systems have been rising day by day. As the systems become more complex, conventional motion control systems can not achieve to meet all the specifications with optimized results. This creates the necessity of fundamental changes in the infrastructure of the system. Field programmable gate array (FPGA) technology enables the reconfiguration of the digital hardware, thus dissolving the necessity of infrastructural changes for minor manipulations in the hardware even if the system is deployed. An FPGA based hardware system shrinks the size of the hardware hence the cost. FPGAs also provide better power ratings for the systems as well as a more reliable system with improved performance. As a trade off, the development is rather more difficult than software based systems, which also affects the research and development time of the overall system. In this paper a level of abstraction is introduced in order to diminish the requirement of advanced hardware description language (HDL) knowledge for implementing motion control systems thoroughly on an FPGA. The intellectual property library consists of synthesizable hardware modules specifically implemented for motion control purposes. Other parts of a motion control system, like user interface and trajectory generation, are implemented as software functions in order to protect the modularity of the system. There are also several external hardware designs for interfacing and driving various types of actuators

FPGA Based Massage Display System Improvement Using Scanning Technique To Minimize Power Consumption

This paper presents a field programmable gate array (FPGA) based embedded system for low power message display. Scanning technique is used to minimize the power consumption. The experiment is conducted on 30 seven segments where an field programmable gate array based intelligent controller scans all the display elements continuously at a certain speed to ensure only one display unit is on and other are off at a given time but human eyes cannot detect it. The test result shows the significant reduction of power consumption over static display system. That is very essential of power efficient solution for the portable electronic system

Programmable Logic Devices in Experimental Quantum Optics

We discuss the unique capabilities of programmable logic devices (PLD's) for experimental quantum optics and describe basic procedures of design and implementation. Examples of advanced applications include optical metrology and feedback control of quantum dynamical systems. As a tutorial illustration of the PLD implementation process, a field programmable gate array (FPGA) controller is used to stabilize the output of a Fabry-Perot cavity

Soil moisture monitoring using field programmable gate array

This paper presents a solution for remote monitoring and sensing of different agricultural parameters that effect the plant growth and productivity. Hardware descriptive language has been used for the implementation of proposed topology on Field Programmable Gate Arrays. The hardware used for this purpose is an Altera board. The simulated results take into consideration the environmental factors such as the humidity, soil moisture content and the temperature. The proposed system continuously monitors the environmental changes for any updates. The system also controls a water motor that is turned on as the system senses the reduction in moisture content. The system implementation on hard wave level show promising results and have been discussed in detailed
