NILM techniques for intelligent home energy management and ambient assisted living: a review
The ongoing deployment of smart meters and different commercial devices has made electricity disaggregation feasible in buildings and households, based on a single measure of the current and, sometimes, of the voltage. Energy disaggregation is intended to separate the total power consumption into specific appliance loads, which can be achieved by applying Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM) techniques with a minimum invasion of privacy. NILM techniques are becoming more and more widespread in recent years, as a consequence of the interest companies and consumers have in efficient energy consumption and management. This work presents a detailed review of NILM methods, focusing particularly on recent proposals and their applications, particularly in the areas of Home Energy Management Systems (HEMS) and Ambient Assisted Living (AAL), where the ability to determine the on/off status of certain devices can provide key information for making further decisions. As well as complementing previous reviews on the NILM field and providing a discussion of the applications of NILM in HEMS and AAL, this paper provides guidelines for future research in these topics.Agência financiadora:

Statistical and Electrical Features Evaluation for Electrical Appliances Energy Disaggregation
In this paper we evaluate several well-known and widely used machine learning algorithms for regression in the energy disaggregation task. Specifically, the Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring approach was considered and the K-Nearest-Neighbours, Support Vector Machines, Deep Neural Networks and Random Forest algorithms were evaluated across five datasets using seven different sets of statistical and electrical features. The experimental results demonstrated the importance of selecting both appropriate features and regression algorithms. Analysis on device level showed that linear devices can be disaggregated using statistical features, while for non-linear devices the use of electrical features significantly improves the disaggregation accuracy, as non-linear appliances have non-sinusoidal current draw and thus cannot be well parametrized only by their active power consumption. The best performance in terms of energy disaggregation accuracy was achieved by the Random Forest regression algorithm.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio
Robust energy disaggregation using appliance-specific temporal contextual information
An extension of the baseline non-intrusive load monitoring approach for energy disaggregation using temporal contextual information is presented in this paper. In detail, the proposed approach uses a two-stage disaggregation methodology with appliance-specific temporal contextual information in order to capture time-varying power consumption patterns in low-frequency datasets. The proposed methodology was evaluated using datasets of different sampling frequency, number and type of appliances. When employing appliance-specific temporal contextual information, an improvement of 1.5% up to 7.3% was observed. With the two-stage disaggregation architecture and using appliance-specific temporal contextual information, the overall energy disaggregation accuracy was further improved across all evaluated datasets with the maximum observed improvement, in terms of absolute increase of accuracy, being equal to 6.8%, thus resulting in a maximum total energy disaggregation accuracy improvement equal to 10.0%.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio
An In Depth Study into Using EMI Signatures for Appliance Identification
Energy conservation is a key factor towards long term energy sustainability.
Real-time end user energy feedback, using disaggregated electric load
composition, can play a pivotal role in motivating consumers towards energy
conservation. Recent works have explored using high frequency conducted
electromagnetic interference (EMI) on power lines as a single point sensing
parameter for monitoring common home appliances. However, key questions
regarding the reliability and feasibility of using EMI signatures for
non-intrusive load monitoring over multiple appliances across different sensing
paradigms remain unanswered. This work presents some of the key challenges
towards using EMI as a unique and time invariant feature for load
disaggregation. In-depth empirical evaluations of a large number of appliances
in different sensing configurations are carried out, in both laboratory and
real world settings. Insights into the effects of external parameters such as
line impedance, background noise and appliance coupling on the EMI behavior of
an appliance are realized through simulations and measurements. A generic
approach for simulating the EMI behavior of an appliance that can then be used
to do a detailed analysis of real world phenomenology is presented. The
simulation approach is validated with EMI data from a router. Our EMI dataset -
High Frequency EMI Dataset (HFED) is also released
Integration of Legacy Appliances into Home Energy Management Systems
The progressive installation of renewable energy sources requires the
coordination of energy consuming devices. At consumer level, this coordination
can be done by a home energy management system (HEMS). Interoperability issues
need to be solved among smart appliances as well as between smart and
non-smart, i.e., legacy devices. We expect current standardization efforts to
soon provide technologies to design smart appliances in order to cope with the
current interoperability issues. Nevertheless, common electrical devices affect
energy consumption significantly and therefore deserve consideration within
energy management applications. This paper discusses the integration of smart
and legacy devices into a generic system architecture and, subsequently,
elaborates the requirements and components which are necessary to realize such
an architecture including an application of load detection for the
identification of running loads and their integration into existing HEM
systems. We assess the feasibility of such an approach with a case study based
on a measurement campaign on real households. We show how the information of
detected appliances can be extracted in order to create device profiles
allowing for their integration and management within a HEMS

A Review of Active Management for Distribution Networks: Current Status and Future Development Trends
Driven by smart distribution technologies, by the widespread use of distributed generation sources, and by the injection of new loads, such as electric vehicles, distribution networks are evolving from passive to active. The integration of distributed generation, including renewable distributed generation changes the power flow of a distribution network from unidirectional to bi-directional. The adoption of electric vehicles makes the management of distribution networks even more challenging. As such, an active network management has to be fulfilled by taking advantage of the emerging techniques of control, monitoring, protection, and communication to assist distribution network operators in an optimal manner. This article presents a short review of recent advancements and identifies emerging technologies and future development trends to support active management of distribution networks
