    Flexible G1 Interpolation of Quad Meshes

    International audienceTransforming an arbitrary mesh into a smooth G1 surface has been the subject of intensive research works. To get a visual pleasing shape without any imperfection even in the presence of extraordinary mesh vertices is still a challenging problem in particular when interpolation of the mesh vertices is required. We present a new local method, which produces visually smooth shapes while solving the interpolation problem. It consists of combining low degree biquartic Bézier patches with minimum number of pieces per mesh face, assembled together with G1-continuity. All surface control points are given explicitly. The construction is local and free of zero-twists. We further show that within this economical class of surfaces it is however possible to derive a sufficient number of meaningful degrees of freedom so that standard optimization techniques result in high quality surfaces

    Open Vehicle Sketch Pad Aircraft Modeling Strategies

    Geometric modeling of aircraft during the Conceptual design phase is very different from that needed for the Preliminary or Detailed design phases. The Conceptual design phase is characterized by the rapid, multi-disciplinary analysis of many design variables by a small engineering team. The designer must walk a line between fidelity and productivity, picking tools and methods with the appropriate balance of characteristics to achieve the goals of the study, while staying within the available resources. Identifying geometric details that are important, and those that are not, is critical to making modeling and methodology choices. This is true for both the low-order analysis methods traditionally used in Conceptual design as well as the highest-order analyses available.     The Construction of Optimized High-Order Surface Meshes by Energy-Minimization

    Despite the increasing popularity of high-order methods in computational fluid dynamics, their application to practical problems still remains challenging. In order to exploit the advantages of high-order methods with geometrically complex computational domains, coarse curved meshes are necessary, i.e. high-order representations of the geometry. This dissertation presents a strategy for the generation of curved high-order surface meshes. The mesh generation method combines least-squares fitting with energy functionals, which approximate physical bending and stretching energies, in an incremental energy-minimizing fitting strategy. Since the energy weighting is reduced in each increment, the resulting surface representation features high accuracy. Nevertheless, the beneficial influence of the energy-minimization is retained. The presented method aims at enabling the utilization of the superior convergence properties of high-order methods by facilitating the construction of coarser meshes, while ensuring accuracy by allowing an arbitrary choice of geometric approximation order. Results show surface meshes of remarkable quality, even for very coarse meshes representing complex domains, e.g. blood vessels

    Programmed design of ship forms

    This paper describes a new category of CAD applications devoted to the definition and parameterization of hull forms, called programmed design. Programmed design relies on two prerequisites. The first one is a product model with a variety of types large enough to face the modeling of any type of ship. The second one is a design language dedicated to create the product model. The main purpose of the language is to publish the modeling algorithms of the application in the designer knowledge domain to let the designer create parametric model scripts. The programmed design is an evolution of the parametric design but it is not just parametric design. It is a tool to create parametric design tools. It provides a methodology to extract the design knowledge by abstracting a design experience in order to store and reuse it. Programmed design is related with the organizational and architectural aspects of the CAD applications but not with the development of modeling algorithms. It is built on top and relies on existing algorithms provided by a comprehensive product model. Programmed design can be useful to develop new applications, to support the evolution of existing applications or even to integrate different types of application in a single one. A three-level software architecture is proposed to make the implementation of the programmed design easier. These levels are the conceptual level based on the design language, the mathematical level based on the geometric formulation of the product model and the visual level based on the polyhedral representation of the model as required by the graphic card. Finally, some scenarios of the use of programmed design are discussed. For instance, the development of specialized parametric hull form generators for a ship type or a family of ships or the creation of palettes of hull form components to be used as parametric design patterns. Also two new processes of reverse engineering which can considerably improve the application have been detected: the creation of the mathematical level from the visual level and the creation of the conceptual level from the mathematical level. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.     Computer aided design of horizontal axis turbine

    This paper presents a computer-based method for modelling the blades of horizontal axis turbines using B-spline surfaces. The method uses common design parameters for the geometry of this type of turbine and produces a final set of B-spline surfaces for the geometry of the blades that can be used for the visualisation, calculations and construction of the rotor surface. The method begins with the creation of a 3D set of offsets that constitute the rotor blades based on a 2D definition of the airfoils, which is normally used in the design of different stations along the rotor blade. It also uses geometrical parameters such as the skew and rake or coning distribution. The method stresses the fitting of the blade?s leading edge, which has a significant impact on the properties of the rotor and separately models the trailing edge of the blades. B-spline curves and surfaces are used in this method because they are widely used in CAD-CAM software products and can be easily exported to other programs
