    Genetic programming and bacterial algorithm for neural networks and fuzzy systems design

    In the field of control systems it is common to use techniques based on model adaptation to carry out control for plants for which mathematical analysis may be intricate. Increasing interest in biologically inspired learning algorithms for control techniques such as Artificial Neural Networks and Fuzzy Systems is in progress. In this line, this paper gives a perspective on the quality of results given by two different biologically connected learning algorithms for the design of B-spline neural networks (BNN) and fuzzy systems (FS). One approach used is the Genetic Programming (GP) for BNN design and the other is the Bacterial Evolutionary Algorithm (BEA) applied for fuzzy rule extraction. Also, the facility to incorporate a multi-objective approach to the GP algorithm is outlined, enabling the designer to obtain models more adequate for their intended use

    Automatic Finding Trapezoidal Membership Functions in Mining Fuzzy Association Rules Based on Learning Automata

    Association rule mining is an important data mining technique used for discovering relationships among all data items. Membership functions have a significant impact on the outcome of the mining association rules. An important challenge in fuzzy association rule mining is finding an appropriate membership functions, which is an optimization issue. In the most relevant studies of fuzzy association rule mining, only triangle membership functions are considered. This study, as the first attempt, used a team of continuous action-set learning automata (CALA) to find both the appropriate number and positions of trapezoidal membership functions (TMFs). The spreads and centers of the TMFs were taken into account as parameters for the research space and a new approach for the establishment of a CALA team to optimize these parameters was introduced. Additionally, to increase the convergence speed of the proposed approach and remove bad shapes of membership functions, a new heuristic approach has been proposed. Experiments on two real data sets showed that the proposed algorithm improves the efficiency of the extracted rules by finding optimized membership functions

    A Fuzzy Inference System for the Assessment of Indoor Air Quality in an Operating Room to Prevent Surgical Site Infection

    Indoor air quality in hospital operating rooms is of great concern for the prevention of surgical site infections (SSI). A wide range of relevant medical and engineering literature has shown that the reduction in air contamination can be achieved by introducing a more efficient set of controls of HVAC systems and exploiting alarms and monitoring systems that allow having a clear report of the internal air status level. In this paper, an operating room air quality monitoring system based on a fuzzy decision support system has been proposed in order to help hospital staff responsible to guarantee a safe environment. The goal of the work is to reduce the airborne contamination in order to optimize the surgical environment, thus preventing the occurrence of SSI and reducing the related mortality rate. The advantage of FIS is that the evaluation of the air quality is based on easy-to-find input data established on the best combination of parameters and level of alert. Compared to other literature works, the proposed approach based on the FIS has been designed to take into account also the movement of clinicians in the operating room in order to monitor unauthorized paths. The test of the proposed strategy has been executed by exploiting data collected by ad-hoc sensors placed inside a real operating block during the experimental activities of the “Bacterial Infections Post Surgery” Project (BIPS). Results show that the system is capable to return risk values with extreme precision

    Fuzzy Modeling of Thermoplastic Composites' Melt Volume Rate

    Melt volume-flow rate (MVR) is one of the most important quality indicators of composite materials, which depends on the proportion of the component materials. This paper reports the development of a low complexity fuzzy model that describes the relation between percentage amount of multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT), acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), polycarbonate (PC) and MVR of the resulting composite. The rule base was generated from a sample data set obtained from experiments by the rule base extension using default set shapes (RBE-DSS) method, and the applied fuzzy inference technique was the least squares method based fuzzy rule interpolation (LESFRI). The resulting model was validated against a separate test data set as well, and it was compared to a fuzzy model generated by a traditional commercial software tool

    Biological investigation and predictive modelling of foaming in anaerobic digester

    Anaerobic digestion (AD) of waste has been identified as a leading technology for greener renewable energy generation as an alternative to fossil fuel. AD will reduce waste through biochemical processes, converting it to biogas which could be used as a source of renewable energy and the residue bio-solids utilised in enriching the soil. A problem with AD though is with its foaming and the associated biogas loss. Tackling this problem effectively requires identifying and effectively controlling factors that trigger and promote foaming. In this research, laboratory experiments were initially carried out to differentiate foaming causal and exacerbating factors. Then the impact of the identified causal factors (organic loading rate-OLR and volatile fatty acid-VFA) on foaming occurrence were monitored and recorded. Further analysis of foaming and nonfoaming sludge samples by metabolomics techniques confirmed that the OLR and VFA are the prime causes of foaming occurrence in AD. In addition, the metagenomics analysis showed that the phylum bacteroidetes and proteobacteria were found to be predominant with a higher relative abundance of 30% and 29% respectively while the phylum actinobacteria representing the most prominent filamentous foam causing bacteria such as Norcadia amarae and Microthrix Parvicella had a very low and consistent relative abundance of 0.9% indicating that the foaming occurrence in the AD studied was not triggered by the presence of filamentous bacteria. Consequently, data driven models to predict foam formation were developed based on experimental data with inputs (OLR and VFA in the feed) and output (foaming occurrence). The models were extensively validated and assessed based on the mean squared error (MSE), root mean squared error (RMSE), R2 and mean absolute error (MAE). Levenberg Marquadt neural network model proved to be the best model for foaming prediction in AD, with RMSE = 5.49, MSE = 30.19 and R2 = 0.9435. The significance of this study is the development of a parsimonious and effective modelling tool that enable AD operators to proactively avert foaming occurrence, as the two model input variables (OLR and VFA) can be easily adjustable through simple programmable logic controller

    Fuzzy logic based approach for object feature tracking

    This thesis introduces a novel technique for feature tracking in sequences of greyscale images based on fuzzy logic. A versatile and modular methodology for feature tracking using fuzzy sets and inference engines is presented. Moreover, an extension of this methodology to perform the correct tracking of multiple features is also presented. To perform feature tracking three membership functions are initially defined. A membership function related to the distinctive property of the feature to be tracked. A membership function is related to the fact of considering that the feature has smooth movement between each image sequence and a membership function concerns its expected future location. Applying these functions to the image pixels, the corresponding fuzzy sets are obtained and then mathematically manipulated to serve as input to an inference engine. Situations such as occlusion or detection failure of features are overcome using estimated positions calculated using a motion model and a state vector of the feature. This methodology was previously applied to track a single feature identified by the user. Several performance tests were conducted on sequences of both synthetic and real images. Experimental results are presented, analysed and discussed. Although this methodology could be applied directly to multiple feature tracking, an extension of this methodology has been developed within that purpose. In this new method, the processing sequence of each feature is dynamic and hierarchical. Dynamic because this sequence can change over time and hierarchical because features with higher priority will be processed first. Thus, the process gives preference to features whose location are easier to predict compared with features whose knowledge of their behavior is less predictable. When this priority value becomes too low, the feature will no longer tracked by the algorithm. To access the performance of this new approach, sequences of images where several features specified by the user are to be tracked were used. In the final part of this work, conclusions drawn from this work as well as the definition of some guidelines for future research are presented.Nesta tese é introduzida uma nova técnica de seguimento de pontos característicos de objectos em sequências de imagens em escala de cinzentos baseada em lógica difusa. É apresentada uma metodologia versátil e modular para o seguimento de objectos utilizando conjuntos difusos e motores de inferência. É também apresentada uma extensão desta metodologia para o correcto seguimento de múltiplos pontos característicos. Para se realizar o seguimento são definidas inicialmente três funções de pertença. Uma função de pertença está relacionada com a propriedade distintiva do objecto que desejamos seguir, outra está relacionada com o facto de se considerar que o objecto tem uma movimentação suave entre cada imagem da sequência e outra função de pertença referente à sua previsível localização futura. Aplicando estas funções de pertença aos píxeis da imagem, obtêm-se os correspondentes conjuntos difusos, que serão manipulados matematicamente e servirão como entrada num motor de inferência. Situações como a oclusão ou falha na detecção dos pontos característicos são ultrapassadas utilizando posições estimadas calculadas a partir do modelo de movimento e a um vector de estados do objecto. Esta metodologia foi inicialmente aplicada no seguimento de um objecto assinalado pelo utilizador. Foram realizados vários testes de desempenho em sequências de imagens sintéticas e também reais. Os resultados experimentais obtidos são apresentados, analisados e discutidos. Embora esta metodologia pudesse ser aplicada directamente ao seguimento de múltiplos pontos característicos, foi desenvolvida uma extensão desta metodologia para esse fim. Nesta nova metodologia a sequência de processamento de cada ponto característico é dinâmica e hierárquica. Dinâmica por ser variável ao longo do tempo e hierárquica por existir uma hierarquia de prioridades relativamente aos pontos característicos a serem seguidos e que determina a ordem pela qual esses pontos são processados. Desta forma, o processo dá preferência a pontos característicos cuja localização é mais fácil de prever comparativamente a pontos característicos cujo conhecimento do seu comportamento seja menos previsível. Quando esse valor de prioridade se torna demasiado baixo, esse ponto característico deixa de ser seguido pelo algoritmo. Para se observar o desempenho desta nova abordagem foram utilizadas sequências de imagens onde várias características indicadas pelo utilizador são seguidas. Na parte final deste trabalho são apresentadas as conclusões resultantes a partir do desenvolvimento deste trabalho, bem como a definição de algumas linhas de investigação futura

    Dynamic non-linear system modelling using wavelet-based soft computing techniques

    The enormous number of complex systems results in the necessity of high-level and cost-efficient modelling structures for the operators and system designers. Model-based approaches offer a very challenging way to integrate a priori knowledge into the procedure. Soft computing based models in particular, can successfully be applied in cases of highly nonlinear problems. A further reason for dealing with so called soft computational model based techniques is that in real-world cases, many times only partial, uncertain and/or inaccurate data is available. Wavelet-Based soft computing techniques are considered, as one of the latest trends in system identification/modelling. This thesis provides a comprehensive synopsis of the main wavelet-based approaches to model the non-linear dynamical systems in real world problems in conjunction with possible twists and novelties aiming for more accurate and less complex modelling structure. Initially, an on-line structure and parameter design has been considered in an adaptive Neuro- Fuzzy (NF) scheme. The problem of redundant membership functions and consequently fuzzy rules is circumvented by applying an adaptive structure. The growth of a special type of Fungus (Monascus ruber van Tieghem) is examined against several other approaches for further justification of the proposed methodology. By extending the line of research, two Morlet Wavelet Neural Network (WNN) structures have been introduced. Increasing the accuracy and decreasing the computational cost are both the primary targets of proposed novelties. Modifying the synoptic weights by replacing them with Linear Combination Weights (LCW) and also imposing a Hybrid Learning Algorithm (HLA) comprising of Gradient Descent (GD) and Recursive Least Square (RLS), are the tools utilised for the above challenges. These two models differ from the point of view of structure while they share the same HLA scheme. The second approach contains an additional Multiplication layer, plus its hidden layer contains several sub-WNNs for each input dimension. The practical superiority of these extensions is demonstrated by simulation and experimental results on real non-linear dynamic system; Listeria Monocytogenes survival curves in Ultra-High Temperature (UHT) whole milk, and consolidated with comprehensive comparison with other suggested schemes. At the next stage, the extended clustering-based fuzzy version of the proposed WNN schemes, is presented as the ultimate structure in this thesis. The proposed Fuzzy Wavelet Neural network (FWNN) benefitted from Gaussian Mixture Models (GMMs) clustering feature, updated by a modified Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm. One of the main aims of this thesis is to illustrate how the GMM-EM scheme could be used not only for detecting useful knowledge from the data by building accurate regression, but also for the identification of complex systems. The structure of FWNN is based on the basis of fuzzy rules including wavelet functions in the consequent parts of rules. In order to improve the function approximation accuracy and general capability of the FWNN system, an efficient hybrid learning approach is used to adjust the parameters of dilation, translation, weights, and membership. Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) is employed for wavelet parameters adjustment together with Weighted Least Square (WLS) which is dedicated for the Linear Combination Weights fine-tuning. The results of a real-world application of Short Time Load Forecasting (STLF) further re-enforced the plausibility of the above technique

    Interleaved Buck Converter Based Shunt Active Power Filter with Shoot-through Elimination for Power Quality Improvement

    The “shoot-through” phenomenon defined as the rush of current that occurs while both the devices are ON at the same time of a particular limb is one of the most perilous failure modes encountered in conventional inverter circuits of active power filter (APF). Shoot-through phenomenon has few distinct disadvantages like; it introduces typical ringing, increases temperature rise in power switches, causes higher Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) and reduces the efficiency of the circuit. To avert the “shoot-through”, dead time control could be added, but it deteriorates the harmonic compensation level. This dissertation presents active power filters (APFs) based on interleaved buck (IB) converter. Compared to traditional shunt active power filters, the presented IB APFs have enhanced reliability with no shoot-through phenomenon. The instantaneous active and reactive power (p-q) scheme and instantaneous active and reactive current component (id-iq) control scheme has been implemented to mitigate the source current harmonics. Type-1 and Type-2 fuzzy logic controller with different membership functions (MFs) viz. Triangular, Trapezoidal and Gaussian have been implemented for the optimal harmonic compensation by controlling the dc-link voltage and minimizing the undesirable losses occurred inside the APF. Additionally, the adaptive hysteresis band current controller (AHBCC) is being implemented to get the nearly constant switching frequency. The performance of the control strategies and controllers for the presented IB APF topologies has been evaluated in terms of harmonic mitigation and dc-link voltage regulation under sinusoidal, unbalanced sinusoidal and non-sinusoidal voltage source condition. This dissertation is concerned with the different topologies of 3-phase 4-wire IB APFs viz. split capacitor (2C) topology, 4-leg (4L) topology, transformer based full-bridge IB APF or single capacitor based FB IB APF (1C 3 FB IB APF) and full-bridge IB APF (FB IB APF) for low to medium power application. Moreover, APF topology is now being expanded to multilevel VSIs for high power application. Thanks to flexible modular design, transformerless connection, extended voltage and power output, less maintenance and higher fault tolerance, the cascade inverters are good candidates for active power filters with the utility of high power application. The cascaded FB IB APF is modelled with no shoot-through phenomenon by using multicarrier phase shifted PWM scheme. Extensive simulations have been carried out in the MATLAB / Simulink environment and also verified in the OPAL-RT LAB using OP5142-Spartan 3 FPGA to support the feasibility of presented IB APF topologies, control strategies and controllers during steady and dynamic condition. The performance shows that IB-APF topologies bring the THD of the source current well below 5% adhering to IEEE-519 standard. A comparison has also been made, based on SDP (switch device power) between the IB-APF topologies
