    Architecture independent environment for developing engineering software on MIMD computers

    Engineers are constantly faced with solving problems of increasing complexity and detail. Multiple Instruction stream Multiple Data stream (MIMD) computers have been developed to overcome the performance limitations of serial computers. The hardware architectures of MIMD computers vary considerably and are much more sophisticated than serial computers. Developing large scale software for a variety of MIMD computers is difficult and expensive. There is a need to provide tools that facilitate programming these machines. First, the issues that must be considered to develop those tools are examined. The two main areas of concern were architecture independence and data management. Architecture independent software facilitates software portability and improves the longevity and utility of the software product. It provides some form of insurance for the investment of time and effort that goes into developing the software. The management of data is a crucial aspect of solving large engineering problems. It must be considered in light of the new hardware organizations that are available. Second, the functional design and implementation of a software environment that facilitates developing architecture independent software for large engineering applications are described. The topics of discussion include: a description of the model that supports the development of architecture independent software; identifying and exploiting concurrency within the application program; data coherence; engineering data base and memory management

    This work presents the design and implementation of our Browser-based Massively Multiplayer Online Game, Living City, a simulation game fully developed at the University of Messina. Living City is a persistent and real-time digital world, running in the Web browser environment and accessible from users without any client-side installation. Today Massively Multiplayer Online Games attract the attention of Computer Scientists both for their architectural peculiarity and the close interconnection with the social network phenomenon. We will cover these two aspects paying particular attention to some aspects of the project: game balancing (e.g. algorithms behind time and money balancing); business logic (e.g., handling concurrency, cheating avoidance and availability) and, finally, social and psychological aspects involved in the collaboration of players, analyzing their activities and interconnections

    Middleware-based Database Replication: The Gaps between Theory and Practice

    The need for high availability and performance in data management systems has been fueling a long running interest in database replication from both academia and industry. However, academic groups often attack replication problems in isolation, overlooking the need for completeness in their solutions, while commercial teams take a holistic approach that often misses opportunities for fundamental innovation. This has created over time a gap between academic research and industrial practice. This paper aims to characterize the gap along three axes: performance, availability, and administration. We build on our own experience developing and deploying replication systems in commercial and academic settings, as well as on a large body of prior related work. We sift through representative examples from the last decade of open-source, academic, and commercial database replication systems and combine this material with case studies from real systems deployed at Fortune 500 customers. We propose two agendas, one for academic research and one for industrial R&D, which we believe can bridge the gap within 5-10 years. This way, we hope to both motivate and help researchers in making the theory and practice of middleware-based database replication more relevant to each other.Comment: 14 pages. Appears in Proc.     Migrating relational data to an OODB: strategies and lessions from a molecular biology experience

    Journal ArticleThe growing maturity of OODB technology is causing many enterprises to consider migrating relational databases to OODBs. While data remapping is relatively straightforward, greater challenges lie in economically and non-invasively adapting legacy application software. We report on a genetics laboratory database migration experiment, which was facilitated by both organization of the relational data in object-like form and a C++ framework designed to insulate application code from relational artifacts. To our surprise, the framework failed to encapsulate three subtle aspects of the relational implementation, thereby "contaminating" application code. We describe the underlying issues, and offer cautionary guidance to future migrators

    Enhancing Energy Production with Exascale HPC Methods

    High Performance Computing (HPC) resources have become the key actor for achieving more ambitious challenges in many disciplines. In this step beyond, an explosion on the available parallelism and the use of special purpose processors are crucial. With such a goal, the HPC4E project applies new exascale HPC techniques to energy industry simulations, customizing them if necessary, and going beyond the state-of-the-art in the required HPC exascale simulations for different energy sources. Nested transaction model is a suitable tool to implement rule execution as it can handle nested rule firing and concurrent rule execution well. In this paper, we describe a concurrent rule execution model based on parallel nested transactions.     Empowering a Relational Database with LSD: Lazy State Determination

    Computer systems are a part of today’s most common activities and, more often than not, involve some type of interaction with a database. In this scheme, databases play a big role, where even small operational delays could cost millions to big tech companies. It is then, of utmost importance that such systems are responsive and adapt automatically to different types of workload. To this date, Relational Database Management System remain the most popular database type, which allows the executing of concurrent transactions with Atomicity, Consistency, Isolation and Durability guarantees. Enforcing such properties requires strict control over the execution of transactions. However, maintaining such properties and controlling the transactions’ concurrency may hamper performance of the system, being this specially the case when database contention is high. Motivated by such behavior, we propose the lazy evaluation of database SQL queries — using Futures/Promises and Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) — by empowering a relational database with Lazy State Determination (LSD). This novel Application Programming Interface (API) allows delaying operations to the commit time, which in the end reduces the transaction window where conflicts may occur. We observed that, by introducing our implementation of a JDBC-LSD driver, in high contention scenarios the throughput increased by 50% and latency reduced by 40%.Os sistemas informáticos são parte das atividades mais comuns na atualidade e, na maioria das vezes, envolvem algum tipo de interação com uma base de dados. Neste cenário, as bases de dados têm um grande papel, sendo que pequenos atrasos operacionais podem custar milhões às grandes empresas tecnológicas. Até os dias de hoje, os Sistemas de Gestão de Bases de Dados Relacionais continuam a ser o tipo de bases de dados mais popular, permitindo a execução concorrente de transações garantindo as propriedades de Atomicidade, Consistência, Isolamento e Durabilidade. A aplicação de tais propriedades requer um controlo rigoroso sobre a execução de transações. No entanto, manter tais propriedades e controlar a concorrência das transacções pode diminuir o desempenho do sistema, sendo especialmente o caso em bases onde a contenção é elevada. Assim, propomos o atraso na execução de queries SQL na base de dados através da introdução do protocolo de controlo de concorrência Lazy State Determination (LSD), com a utilização de Futuros/Promessas e Java Database Connectivity (JDBC). Esta nova Interface de Programação de Aplicações (API) permite adiar as operações para o momento do commit, o que acaba por reduzir a janela da transação onde conflitos podem ocorrer. Observamos que, ao utilizar LSD em um cliente JDBC, nós conseguimos aumentar a taxa de execução de transações em 50% e reduzir a latência em 40% num ambiente de contenção elevada

    The United States Marine Corps Data Collaboration Requirements: Retrieving and Integrating Data From Multiple Databases

    The goal of this research is to develop an information sharing and database integration model and suggest a framework to fully satisfy the United States Marine Corps collaboration requirements as well as its information sharing and database integration needs. This research is exploratory; it focuses on only one initiative: the IT-21 initiative. The IT-21 initiative dictates The Technology for the United States Navy and Marine Corps, 2000-2035: Becoming a 21st Century Force. The IT-21 initiative states that Navy and Marine Corps information infrastructure will be based largely on commercial systems and services, and the Department of the Navy must ensure that these systems are seamlessly integrated and that information transported over the infrastructure is protected and secure. The Delphi Technique, a qualitative method approach, was used to develop a Holistic Model and to suggest a framework for information sharing and database integration. Data was primarily collected from mid-level to senior information officers, with a focus on Chief Information Officers. In addition, an extensive literature review was conducted to gain insight about known similarities and differences in Strategic Information Management, information sharing strategies, and database integration strategies. It is hoped that the Armed Forces and the Department of Defense will benefit from future development of the information sharing and database integration Holistic Model
