    Resource provisioning and scheduling algorithms for hybrid workflows in edge cloud computing

    In recent years, Internet of Things (IoT) technology has been involved in a wide range of application domains to provide real-time monitoring, tracking and analysis services. The worldwide number of IoT-connected devices is projected to increase to 43 billion by 2023, and IoT technologies are expected to engaged in 25% of business sector. Latency-sensitive applications in scope of intelligent video surveillance, smart home, autonomous vehicle, augmented reality, are all emergent research directions in industry and academia. These applications are required connecting large number of sensing devices to attain the desired level of service quality for decision accuracy in a sensitive timely manner. Moreover, continuous data stream imposes processing large amounts of data, which adds a huge overhead on computing and network resources. Thus, latency-sensitive and resource-intensive applications introduce new challenges for current computing models, i.e, batch and stream. In this thesis, we refer to the integrated application model of stream and batch applications as a hybrid work ow model. The main challenge of the hybrid model is achieving the quality of service (QoS) requirements of the two computation systems. This thesis provides a systemic and detailed modeling for hybrid workflows which describes the internal structure of each application type for purposes of resource estimation, model systems tuning, and cost modeling. For optimizing the execution of hybrid workflows, this thesis proposes algorithms, techniques and frameworks to serve resource provisioning and task scheduling on various computing systems including cloud, edge cloud and cooperative edge cloud. Overall, experimental results provided in this thesis demonstrated strong evidences on the responsibility of proposing different understanding and vision on the applications of integrating stream and batch applications, and how edge computing and other emergent technologies like 5G networks and IoT will contribute on more sophisticated and intelligent solutions in many life disciplines for more safe, secure, healthy, smart and sustainable society

    Modeling and simulation of data-driven applications in SDN-aware environments

    PhD ThesisThe rising popularity of Software-Defined Networking (SDN) is increasing as it promises to offer a window of opportunity and new features in terms of network performance, configuration, and management. As such, SDN is exploited by several emerging applications and environments, such as cloud computing, edge computing, IoT, and data- driven applications. Although SDN has demonstrated significant improvements in industry, still little research has explored the embracing of SDN in the area of cross-layer optimization in different SDN-aware environments. Each application and computing environment require different functionalities and Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. For example, a typical MapReduce application would require data transmission at three different times while the data transmission of stream-based applications would be unknown due to uncertainty about the number of required tasks and dependencies among stream tasks. As such, the deployment of SDN with different applications are not identical, which require different deployment strategies and algorithms to meet different QoS requirements (e.g., high bandwidth, deadline). Further, each application and environment has unique architectures, which impose different form of complexity in terms of computing, storage, and network. Due to such complexities, finding optimal solutions for SDN-aware applications and environments become very challenging. Therefore, this thesis presents multilateral research towards optimization, modeling, and simulation of cross-layer optimization of SDN-aware applications and environments. Several tools and algorithms have been proposed, implemented, and evaluated, considering various environments and applications[1–4].     Measuring Expressive Music Performances: a Performance Science Model using Symbolic Approximation

    Music Performance Science (MPS), sometimes termed systematic musicology in Northern Europe, is concerned with designing, testing and applying quantitative measurements to music performances. It has applications in art musics, jazz and other genres. It is least concerned with aesthetic judgements or with ontological considerations of artworks that stand alone from their instantiations in performances. Musicians deliver expressive performances by manipulating multiple, simultaneous variables including, but not limited to: tempo, acceleration and deceleration, dynamics, rates of change of dynamic levels, intonation and articulation. There are significant complexities when handling multivariate music datasets of significant scale. A critical issue in analyzing any types of large datasets is the likelihood of detecting meaningless relationships the more dimensions are included. One possible choice is to create algorithms that address both volume and complexity. Another, and the approach chosen here, is to apply techniques that reduce both the dimensionality and numerosity of the music datasets while assuring the statistical significance of results. This dissertation describes a flexible computational model, based on symbolic approximation of timeseries, that can extract time-related characteristics of music performances to generate performance fingerprints (dissimilarities from an ‘average performance’) to be used for comparative purposes. The model is applied to recordings of Arnold Schoenberg’s Phantasy for Violin with Piano Accompaniment, Opus 47 (1949), having initially been validated on Chopin Mazurkas.1 The results are subsequently used to test hypotheses about evolution in performance styles of the Phantasy since its composition. It is hoped that further research will examine other works and types of music in order to improve this model and make it useful to other music researchers. In addition to its benefits for performance analysis, it is suggested that the model has clear applications at least in music fraud detection, Music Information Retrieval (MIR) and in pedagogical applications for music education

    Abstract: A conceptual model of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and service quality for Islamic bank service users is developed in this paper. The model is expected to bring about a better understanding of customer perceptions relating to issues of social responsibility and its impact on service quality as it pertains to Islamic banking in South Africa. The conceptual model is developed by synthesising relevant literature and theories pertaining to this study. This conceptual model is proposed to be tested in due course of time by using customer perceptions derived from a survey instrument to assess the relationship between aspects of social responsibility and service quality at the Islamic bank. The proposed model has implications towards enhancing the CSR and service quality offered by the Islamic bank according to their customer expectations

    TesisEl propósito de este trabajo de investigación fue determinar el grado de relación entre el clima organizacional y la satisfacción laboral en los trabajadores de la Asociación para el Desarrollo Empresarial en Apurímac, Andahuaylas. A fin de proporcionar al directivo de la institución, sugerencias de cambio, reforzamiento y/o de mejora. Para la realización de este estudio se determinó como muestra al total de la población, conformada por 30 trabajadores a quienes se les aplicó un cuestionario estructurado, tipo escala de Likert, para diagnosticar el clima organizacional, compuesto por 21 ítems correspondiente a 5 dimensiones, y para medir la satisfacción laboral, compuesto por 14 ítems correspondiente a 2 dimensiones, validados por tres expertos en la materia. El análisis de fiabilidad de los cuestionarios arroja un coeficiente de Alf a de Cronbach para la escala de clima organizacional y satisfacción laboral de 0.796 y 0.721 respectivamente confiables. La hipótesis principal señalaba que existía relación entre el clima organizacional y satisfacción laboral. La principal conclusión comprobó que hay relación entre las dos variable, es decir, existe relación significativa positiva entre el clima organizacional y satisfacción laboral. A nivel de las hipótesis específicas se comprobó las dimensiones de clima organizacional la estructura, autonomía, relaciones interpersonales, identidad se correlacionaron de forma significante y positiva con la satisfacción laboral. Sin embargo no se encontró relación entre la dimensión recompensa con la satisfacción laboral en la Asociación para el Desarrollo Empresarial el Apurímac
