    European Mixed Forests: definition and research perspectives

Area of study: The definition is developed in Europe but can be tested worldwide. Material and methods: Review of existent definitions of mixed forests based and literature review encompassing dynamics, management and economic valuation of mixed forests. Main results: A mixed forest is defined as a forest unit, excluding linear formations, where at least two tree species coexist at any developmental stage, sharing common resources (light, water, and/or soil nutrients). The presence of each of the component species is normally quantified as a proportion of the number of stems or of basal area, although volume, biomass or canopy cover as well as proportions by occupied stand area may be used for specific objectives. A variety of structures and patterns of mixtures can occur, and the interactions between the component species and their relative proportions may change over time. The research perspectives identified are (i) species interactions and responses to hazards, (ii) the concept of maximum density in mixed forests, (iii) conversion of monocultures to mixed-species forest and (iv) economic valuation of ecosystem services provided by mixed forests. Research highlights: The definition is considered a high-level one which encompasses previous attempts to define mixed forests.     Assessing soil C stock and C to N ratio of soil organic matter under mixed pine-beech forests at different scales

    Producción CientíficaHealthy soils are the second C sink on Earth, and this sink could last for hundreds or even thousands of years as stable soil organic matter (SOM). Forest soils, in particular, have the potential to store significant amounts of C, however, the amount of C sequestered and the carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratio of soil organic matter (SOM) depend on the vegetation influencing the soil. In the last decades, mixed stands have aroused great interest among the scientific community, but it is still necessary to intensify research on its effect on soils and their C storage capacity. In this study, we assess soil C sequestration potential in soil and litter of mixed and pure stands of Scots pine and beech (Pinus sylvestris–Fagus sylvatica). Three triplets (9 forest plots), two located in Southern Poland and one in Southern Germany were studied. A total of 40 circular subplots of 5 m radius were selected within the triplets, covering a wide range of species mixture, and soil and litter were sampled. Data were analyzed at two scales (plot-level and microsite-level) to determine which option is more appropriate when studying the mixing effect on SOM. Cstock in forest floor ranged between 2.5 and 11.1 Mg C ha−1 and in mineral soil between 39.6 and 337.8 Mg ha−1. According to our findings, the percentage of species mixture primarily impacted the forest floor rather than the mineral soil. On the forest floor, stands with 25–50% pine in the mixture were found to have a C/N ratio between 20 and 30, which indicates an equilibrium state between mineralization and immobilization. In the mineral soil, total organic C was the only variable affected by mixture percentage (p < 0.1). Finally, microsite-level scale proved to be the most appropriate when studying tree stand composition effect on SOM, as the plot-level scale diluted or masked some effects.Junta de Castilla y León - projects "Servicios ecosistémicos de los suelos bajo masas forestales mixtas versus masas puras.     A New Method to Reconstruct Recent Tree and Stand Attributes of Temporary Research Plots: New Opportunity to Analyse Mixed Forest Stands

    In the last decades, studying effects of mixing tree species is increasingly important. In particular, under changing growing conditions and social requirements, investigations on mixed forest compared to mono-specific stands are of special interest, for example, stability, resilience or ecosystem services. Permanent forest research plots are a unique data source, providing the required information but being time-consuming and costly to establish. Moreover, large data sets of such plots are missing but needed for generalising any findings. Temporary research plots provide ad hoc information of its status quo and require less effort than permanent plots. Usually, such plots provide no information of the recent tree and stand characteristics. We demonstrate a new method developed under the scope of COST action FP 1206 EuMIXFOR (European Network on Mixed Forests) to estimate retrospective tree dynamics and stand characteristics. The results of validation reveal its usefulness for reconstructing 5–10 years. Thus, the method provides new potential in establishing larger networks across several countries, in particular, for studying underlying processes when comparing mono-specific with mixed forest stands

    Knowledge gaps about mixed forests : What do European forest managers want to know and what answers can science provide?

    Research into mixed-forests has increased substantially in the last decades but the extent to which the new knowledge generated meets practitioners' concerns and is adequately transmitted to them is unknown. Here we provide the current state of knowledge and future research directions with regards to 10 questions about mixed forest functioning and management identified and selected by a range of European forest managers during an extensive participatory process. The set of 10 questions were the highest ranked questions from an online prioritization exercise involving 168 managers from 22 different European countries. In general, the topics of major concern for forest managers coincided with the ones that are at the heart of most research projects. They covered important issues related to the management of mixed forests and the role of mixtures for the stability of forests faced with environmental changes and the provision of ecosystem services to society. Our analysis showed that the current scientific knowledge about these questions was rather variable and particularly low for those related to the management of mixed forests over time and the associated costs. We also found that whereas most research projects have sought to evaluate whether mixed forests are more stable or provide more goods and services than monocultures, there is still little information on the underlying mechanisms and trade-offs behind these effects. Similarly, we identified a lack of knowledge on the spatio-temporal scales at which the effects of mixtures on the resistance and adaptability to environmental changes are operating. Our analysis may help researchers to identify what knowledge needs to be better transferred and to better design future research initiatives meeting practitioner's concerns.Peer reviewe

    Lövskog för framtiden

    Denna lägesrapport från projektet ”Lövskog för framtiden” riktar sig till projektets finansiärer och dess medarbetare, men kan med fördel spridas till övriga intressenter och avnämare. Under perioden årskiftet 2011/12 till slutet av 2013 har projektet haft fyra projektmöten och varit med om att genomföra två större seminarier/exkursioner. Alla åtta delprojekt har kommit igång på ett bra sätt och enligt plan och många av delprojekten har redan producerat vetenskapliga och populärvetenskapliga artiklar eller är på väg att göra det. I ett av delprojekten har projektledaren flyttat utomlands, varför ambitionen i det projektet minskats något. Projektets medarbetare har också lyckats hitta kompletterande finansiering under 2013, och deltagarna har kopplat upp sig mot internationella nätverk finansierade av EU. Projektets mål ser ut att kunna nås vid slutet av 2014, men eftersom forskningssatsningen är relativt liten är det knappast troligt att målen nås om det utvärderas enskilt. Utvärderat tillsammans med liknande forskningssatsningar på temat lövskog där projektdeltagarna är inblandade i är det däremot troligt att målen nås. Flera av projektets deltagare kommer under 2014 att behöva lägga ned mer arbete på att finna ny finansiering eftersom flera delprojekt redan har förbrukat en relativt stor del av sin finansiering.
