    Benchmarking 6DOF Outdoor Visual Localization in Changing Conditions

    Visual localization enables autonomous vehicles to navigate in their surroundings and augmented reality applications to link virtual to real worlds. Practical visual localization approaches need to be robust to a wide variety of viewing condition, including day-night changes, as well as weather and seasonal variations, while providing highly accurate 6 degree-of-freedom (6DOF) camera pose estimates. In this paper, we introduce the first benchmark datasets specifically designed for analyzing the impact of such factors on visual localization. Using carefully created ground truth poses for query images taken under a wide variety of conditions, we evaluate the impact of various factors on 6DOF camera pose estimation accuracy through extensive experiments with state-of-the-art localization approaches. Based on our results, we draw conclusions about the difficulty of different conditions, showing that long-term localization is far from solved, and propose promising avenues for future work, including sequence-based localization approaches and the need for better local features.     Robot Navigation in Human Environments

    For the near future, we envision service robots that will help us with everyday chores in home, office, and urban environments. These robots need to work in environments that were designed for humans and they have to collaborate with humans to fulfill their tasks. In this thesis, we propose new methods for communicating, transferring knowledge, and collaborating between humans and robots in four different navigation tasks. In the first application, we investigate how automated services for giving wayfinding directions can be improved to better address the needs of the human recipients. We propose a novel method based on inverse reinforcement learning that learns from a corpus of human-written route descriptions what amount and type of information a route description should contain. By imitating the human teachers' description style, our algorithm produces new route descriptions that sound similarly natural and convey similar information content, as we show in a user study. In the second application, we investigate how robots can leverage background information provided by humans for exploring an unknown environment more efficiently. We propose an algorithm for exploiting user-provided information such as sketches or floor plans by combining a global exploration strategy based on the solution of a traveling salesman problem with a local nearest-frontier-first exploration scheme. Our experiments show that the exploration tours are significantly shorter and that our system allows the user to effectively select the areas that the robot should explore. In the second part of this thesis, we focus on humanoid robots in home and office environments. The human-like body plan allows humanoid robots to navigate in environments and operate tools that were designed for humans, making humanoid robots suitable for a wide range of applications. As localization and mapping are prerequisites for all navigation tasks, we first introduce a novel feature descriptor for RGB-D sensor data and integrate this building block into an appearance-based simultaneous localization and mapping system that we adapt and optimize for the usage on humanoid robots. Our optimized system is able to track a real Nao humanoid robot more accurately and more robustly than existing approaches. As the third application, we investigate how humanoid robots can cover known environments efficiently with their camera, for example for inspection or search tasks. We extend an existing next-best-view approach by integrating inverse reachability maps, allowing us to efficiently sample and check collision-free full-body poses. Our approach enables the robot to inspect as much of the environment as possible. In our fourth application, we extend the coverage scenario to environments that also include articulated objects that the robot has to actively manipulate to uncover obstructed regions. We introduce algorithms for navigation subtasks that run highly parallelized on graphics processing units for embedded devices. Together with a novel heuristic for estimating utility maps, our system allows to find high-utility camera poses for efficiently covering environments with articulated objects. All techniques presented in this thesis were implemented in software and thoroughly evaluated in user studies, simulations, and experiments in both artificial and real-world environments. Our approaches advance the state of the art towards universally usable robots in everyday environments.Roboternavigation in menschlichen Umgebungen In naher Zukunft erwarten wir Serviceroboter, die uns im Haushalt, im Büro und in der Stadt alltägliche Arbeiten abnehmen. Diese Roboter müssen in für Menschen gebauten Umgebungen zurechtkommen und sie müssen mit Menschen zusammenarbeiten um ihre Aufgaben zu erledigen. In dieser Arbeit schlagen wir neue Methoden für die Kommunikation, Wissenstransfer und Zusammenarbeit zwischen Menschen und Robotern bei Navigationsaufgaben in vier Anwendungen vor. In der ersten Anwendung untersuchen wir, wie automatisierte Dienste zur Generierung von Wegbeschreibungen verbessert werden können, um die Beschreibungen besser an die Bedürfnisse der Empfänger anzupassen. Wir schlagen eine neue Methode vor, die inverses bestärkendes Lernen nutzt, um aus einem Korpus von von Menschen geschriebenen Wegbeschreibungen zu lernen, wie viel und welche Art von Information eine Wegbeschreibung enthalten sollte. Indem unser Algorithmus den Stil der Wegbeschreibungen der menschlichen Lehrer imitiert, kann der Algorithmus neue Wegbeschreibungen erzeugen, die sich ähnlich natürlich anhören und einen ähnlichen Informationsgehalt vermitteln, was wir in einer Benutzerstudie zeigen. In der zweiten Anwendung untersuchen wir, wie Roboter von Menschen bereitgestellte Hintergrundinformationen nutzen können, um eine bisher unbekannte Umgebung schneller zu erkunden. Wir schlagen einen Algorithmus vor, der Hintergrundinformationen wie Gebäudegrundrisse oder Skizzen nutzt, indem er eine globale Explorationsstrategie basierend auf der Lösung eines Problems des Handlungsreisenden kombiniert mit einer lokalen Explorationsstrategie. Unsere Experimente zeigen, dass die Erkundungstouren signifikant kürzer werden und dass der Benutzer mit unserem System effektiv die zu erkundenden Regionen spezifizieren kann. Der zweite Teil dieser Arbeit konzentriert sich auf humanoide Roboter in Umgebungen zu Hause und im Büro. Der menschenähnliche Körperbau ermöglicht es humanoiden Robotern, in Umgebungen zu navigieren und Werkzeuge zu benutzen, die für Menschen gebaut wurden, wodurch humanoide Roboter für vielfältige Aufgaben einsetzbar sind. Da Lokalisierung und Kartierung Grundvoraussetzungen für alle Navigationsaufgaben sind, führen wir zunächst einen neuen Merkmalsdeskriptor für RGB-D-Sensordaten ein und integrieren diesen Baustein in ein erscheinungsbasiertes simultanes Lokalisierungs- und Kartierungsverfahren, das wir an die Besonderheiten von humanoiden Robotern anpassen und optimieren. Unser System kann die Position eines realen humanoiden Roboters genauer und robuster verfolgen, als es mit existierenden Ansätzen möglich ist. Als dritte Anwendung untersuchen wir, wie humanoide Roboter bekannte Umgebungen effizient mit ihrer Kamera abdecken können, beispielsweise zu Inspektionszwecken oder zum Suchen eines Gegenstands. Wir erweitern ein bestehendes Verfahren, das die nächstbeste Beobachtungsposition berechnet, durch inverse Erreichbarkeitskarten, wodurch wir kollisionsfreie Ganzkörperposen effizient generieren und prüfen können. Unser Ansatz ermöglicht es dem Roboter, so viel wie möglich von der Umgebung zu untersuchen. In unserer vierten Anwendung erweitern wir dieses Szenario um Umgebungen, die auch bewegbare Gegenstände enthalten, die der Roboter aktiv bewegen muss um verdeckte Regionen zu sehen. Wir führen Algorithmen für Teilprobleme ein, die hoch parallelisiert auf Grafikkarten von eingebetteten Systemen ausgeführt werden. Zusammen mit einer neuen Heuristik zur Schätzung von Nutzenkarten ermöglicht dies unserem System Beobachtungspunkte mit hohem Nutzen zu finden, um Umgebungen mit bewegbaren Objekten effizient zu inspizieren. Alle vorgestellten Techniken wurden in Software implementiert und sorgfältig evaluiert in Benutzerstudien, Simulationen und Experimenten in künstlichen und realen Umgebungen.     The Impact of Three Interfaces for 360-Degree Video on Spatial Cognition

    In this paper, we describe an experiment designed to evaluate the effectiveness of three interfaces for surveillance or remote control using live 360-degree video feeds from a person or vehicle in the field. Video feeds are simulated using a game engine. While locating targets within a 3D terrain using a 2D 360-degree interface, participants indicated perceived egocentric directions to targets and later placed targets on an overhead view of the terrain. Interfaces were compared based on target finding and map placement performance. Results suggest 1) nonseamless interfaces with visual boundaries facilitate spatial understanding, 2) correct perception of self-to-object relationships is not correlated with understanding object-toobject relationships within the environment, and 3) increased video game experience corresponds with better spatial understanding of an environment observed in 360- degrees. This work can assist researchers of panoramic video systems in evaluating the optimal interface for observation and teleoperation of remote systems

    Evaluation and Application of Max-DOAS Methods for Monitoring Aerosols, NO2, and SO2 in Urban and Industrial Environments

    The ideal measurement technique to effectively address an air quality problem depends on the chemical and physical properties of the species and its environment. Multi-Axis Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS) techniques allow a diversity of applications for studying atmospheric species, including the determination of emissions, vertical profiles, and the tropospheric column loading of trace gases. Deployment of the MAX-DOAS instrument during the comprehensive air quality campaign in the Athabasca Oil Sands Region in 2013 provided a rare opportunity to evaluate the performance of multiple aspects of the MAX-DOAS retrievals. Retrievals of aerosol extinction, NO2, and SO2 were compared to data from lidar, sun photometer, Active-DOAS, and airborne in-situ measurements of trace gases. The MAX-DOAS retrievals performed well except under conditions of rapidly changing vertical profiles of pollution. Important elements required to achieve useful inter-comparisons of MAX-DOAS with other instruments (e.g., the lidar S-ratio) and advantages of the MAX-DOAS technique were identified. MAX-DOAS measurements of SO2 gas calibration cells were conducted to determine the optimal settings for fitting SO2 differential slant column densitities (dSCDs), currently absent in the literature. Fitting dSCDs of SO2 from solar measurements is challenging due to the effects of stray light, potential interference by O3 absorption, and low solar intensity in wavelength regions where SO2 absorption features are strong. Based on the experiments, the use of a short-pass filter and a fitting window of 307.5 < <319 nm are recommended. MAX-DOAS measurements in Toronto, Ontario, during 2015 quantified the impact of lake-breeze circulations on the tropospheric loading of NO2 and aerosol extinction. These first measurements of the total tropospheric loading of pollutants behind a lake breeze front on multiple days using MAX-DOAS confirms previously theorized 3-D structures of lake breezes. Finally, the mobile-MAX-DOAS technique of estimating NOx and SO2 emissions was improved by conducting simultaneous Mobile-MAX-DOAS and in-situ NO-NO2-NOx measurements and deploying a modular meteorological station while observing urban plumes in the industrial city of Sarnia, Ontario. These studies demonstrated the utility of MAX-DOAS techniques for monitoring tropospheric air quality in industrial and urban settings when in-situ and other remote sensing techniques are limited

    Leveraging 3D City Models for Rotation Invariant Place-of-Interest Recognition

    Given a cell phone image of a building we address the problem of place-of-interest recognition in urban scenarios. Here, we go beyond what has been shown in earlier approaches by exploiting the nowadays often available 3D building information (e.g. from extruded floor plans) and massive street-level image data for database creation. Exploiting vanishing points in query images and thus fully removing 3D rotation from the recognition problem allows then to simplify the feature invariance to a purely homothetic problem, which we show enables more discriminative power in feature descriptors than classical SIFT. We rerank visual word based document queries using a fast stratified homothetic verification that in most cases boosts the correct document to top positions if it was in the short list. Since we exploit 3D building information, the approach finally outputs the camera pose in real world coordinates ready for augmenting the cell phone image with virtual 3D information. The whole system is demonstrated to outperform traditional approaches on city scale experiments for different sources of street-level image data and a challenging set of cell phone image

    Automatic segmentation and reconstruction of traffic accident scenarios from mobile laser scanning data

    Virtual reconstruction of historic sites, planning of restorations and attachments of new building parts, as well as forest inventory are few examples of fields that benefit from the application of 3D surveying data. Originally using 2D photo based documentation and manual distance measurements, the 3D information obtained from multi camera and laser scanning systems realizes a noticeable improvement regarding the surveying times and the amount of generated 3D information. The 3D data allows a detailed post processing and better visualization of all relevant spatial information. Yet, for the extraction of the required information from the raw scan data and for the generation of useable visual output, time-consuming, complex user-based data processing is still required, using the commercially available 3D software tools. In this context, the automatic object recognition from 3D point cloud and depth data has been discussed in many different works. The developed tools and methods however, usually only focus on a certain kind of object or the detection of learned invariant surface shapes. Although the resulting methods are applicable for certain practices of data segmentation, they are not necessarily suitable for arbitrary tasks due to the varying requirements of the different fields of research. This thesis presents a more widespread solution for automatic scene reconstruction from 3D point clouds, targeting street scenarios, specifically for the task of traffic accident scene analysis and documentation. The data, obtained by sampling the scene using a mobile scanning system is evaluated, segmented, and finally used to generate detailed 3D information of the scanned environment. To realize this aim, this work adapts and validates various existing approaches on laser scan segmentation regarding the application on accident relevant scene information, including road surfaces and markings, vehicles, walls, trees and other salient objects. The approaches are therefore evaluated regarding their suitability and limitations for the given tasks, as well as for possibilities concerning the combined application together with other procedures. The obtained knowledge is used for the development of new algorithms and procedures to allow a satisfying segmentation and reconstruction of the scene, corresponding to the available sampling densities and precisions. Besides the segmentation of the point cloud data, this thesis presents different visualization and reconstruction methods to achieve a wider range of possible applications of the developed system for data export and utilization in different third party software tools

    Camera Pose Estimation from Street-view Snapshots and Point Clouds

    This PhD thesis targets on two research problems: (1) How to efficiently and robustly estimate the camera pose of a query image with a map that contains street-view snapshots and point clouds; (2) Given the estimated camera pose of a query image, how to create meaningful and intuitive applications with the map data. To conquer the first research problem, we systematically investigated indirect, direct and hybrid camera pose estimation strategies. We implemented state-of-the-art methods and performed comprehensive experiments in two public benchmark datasets considering outdoor environmental changes from ideal to extremely challenging cases. Our key findings are: (1) the indirect method is usually more accurate than the direct method when there are enough consistent feature correspondences; (2) The direct method is sensitive to initialization, but under extreme outdoor environmental changes, the mutual-information-based direct method is more robust than the feature-based methods; (3) The hybrid method combines the strength from both direct and indirect method and outperforms them in challenging datasets. To explore the second research problem, we considered inspiring and useful applications by exploiting the camera pose together with the map data. Firstly, we invented a 3D-map augmented photo gallery application, where images’ geo-meta data are extracted with an indirect camera pose estimation method and photo sharing experience is improved with the augmentation of 3D map. Secondly, we designed an interactive video playback application, where an indirect method estimates video frames’ camera pose and the video playback is augmented with a 3D map. Thirdly, we proposed a 3D visual primitive based indoor object and outdoor scene recognition method, where the 3D primitives are accumulated from the multiview images
