    The estimation of ground-level nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and ozone (O3) concentrations using Real-Time Learning (RTL)-based machine learning approach

    Department of Urban and Environmental Engineering (Environmental Science and Engineering)Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and ozone (O3) are the significant components of gaseous air pollutants that have harmful effects on human health. The monitoring and analysis of air pollutant exposure and persistence, and short-term forecasts are necessary for efficient public health management. In this study, the estimation model for the ground-level O3 and NO2 concentrations was developed which are spatially continuous over the land and ocean. The ground-level estimation was developed using the RTL-based machine learning technique with various satellite data and numerical model data as input variables. Three models were tested to build an accurate model using the most available data. 1) the ocean model using only ocean variables that have values for all regions2) the land model using all available data with assigning constant values to ocean variables3) the combined model that combines the results of the ocean model for sea area and the results of the land model for land area. Since NO2 and O3 have a relatively short lifespan, the real-time learning model is effective in estimating accurate ground-level concentrations.ope

    Spatiotemporal and temporal forecasting of ambient air pollution levels through data-intensive hybrid artificial neural network models

    Outdoor air pollution (AP) is a serious public threat which has been linked to severe respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses, and premature deaths especially among those residing in highly urbanised cities. As such, there is a need to develop early-warning and risk management tools to alleviate its effects. The main objective of this research is to develop AP forecasting models based on Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) according to an identified model-building protocol from existing related works. Plain, hybrid and ensemble ANN model architectures were developed to estimate the temporal and spatiotemporal variability of hourly NO2 levels in several locations in the Greater London area. Wavelet decomposition was integrated with Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) and Long Short-term Memory (LSTM) models to address the issue of high variability of AP data and improve the estimation of peak AP levels. Block-splitting and crossvalidation procedures have been adapted to validate the models based on Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), Mean Absolute Error (MAE), and Willmott’s index of agreement (IA). The results of the proposed models present better performance than those from the benchmark models. For instance, the proposed wavelet-based hybrid approach provided 39.15% and 28.58% reductions in RMSE and MAE indices, respectively, on the performance of the benchmark MLP model results for the temporal forecasting of NO2 levels. The same approach reduced the RMSE and MAE indices of the benchmark LSTM model results by 12.45% and 20.08%, respectively, for the spatiotemporal estimation of NO2 levels in one site at Central London. The proposed hybrid deep learning approach offers great potential to be operational in providing air pollution forecasts in areas without a reliable database.     Data Mining Paradigm in the Study of Air Quality

    Air pollution is a serious global problem that threatens human life and health, as well as the environment. The most important aspect of a successful air quality management strategy is the measurement analysis, air quality forecasting, and reporting system. A complete insight, an accurate prediction, and a rapid response may provide valuable information for society’s decision-making. The data mining paradigm can assist in the study of air quality by providing a structured work methodology that simplifies data analysis. This study presents a systematic review of the literature from 2014 to 2018 on the use of data mining in the analysis of air pollutant measurements. For this review, a data mining approach to air quality analysis was proposed that was consistent with the 748 articles consulted. The most frequent sources of data have been the measurements of monitoring networks, and other technologies such as remote sensing, low-cost sensors, and social networks which are gaining importance in recent years. Among the topics studied in the literature were the redundancy of the information collected in the monitoring networks, the forecasting of pollutant levels or days of excessive regulation, and the identification of meteorological or land use parameters that have the most substantial impact on air quality. As methods to visualise and present the results, we recovered graphic design, air quality index development, heat mapping, and geographic information systems. We hope that this study will provide anchoring of theoretical-practical development in the field and that it will provide inputs for air quality planning and management.Facultad de Ciencias Exacta

    Intelligent Hardware-Software Processing of High-Frequency Scanning Data

    The constant emission of polluting gases is causing an urgent need for timely detection of harmful gas mixtures in the atmosphere. A method and algorithm of the determining spectral composition of gas with a gas analyzer using an artificial neural network (ANN) were suggested in the article. A small closed gas dynamic system was designed and used as an experimental bench for collecting and quantifying gas concentrations for testing the proposed method. This device was based on AS7265x and BMP180 sensors connected in parallel to a 3.3 V compatible Arduino Uno board via QWIIC. Experimental tests were conducted with air from the laboratory room, carbon dioxide (CO2), and a mixture of pure oxygen (O2) with nitrogen (N2) in a 9:1 ratio. Three ANNs with one input, one hidden and one output layer were built. The ANN had 5, 10, and 20 hidden neurons, respectively. The dataset was divided into three parts: 70% for training, 15% for validation, and 15% for testing. The mean square error (MSE) error and regression were analyzed during training. Training, testing, and validation error analysis were performed to find the optimal iteration, and the MSE versus training iteration was plotted. The best indicators of training and construction were shown by the ANN with 5 (five) hidden layers, and 16 iterations are enough to train, test and verify this neural network. To test the obtained neural network, the program code was written in the MATLAB. The proposed scheme of the gas analyzer is operable and has a high accuracy of gas detection with a given error of 3%. The results of the study can be used in the development of an industrial gas analyzer for the detection of harmful gas mixtures

    A review of artificial neural network models for ambient air pollution prediction

    Research activity in the field of air pollution forecasting using artificial neural networks (ANNs) has increased dramatically in recent years. However, the development of ANN models entails levels of uncertainty given the black-box nature of ANNs. In this paper, a protocol by Maier et al. (2010) for ANN model development is presented and applied to assess journal papers dealing with air pollution forecasting using ANN models. The majority of the reviewed works are aimed at the long-term forecasting of outdoor PM10, PM2.5, and oxides of nitrogen, and ozone. The vast majority of the identified works utilised meteorological and source emissions predictors almost exclusively. Furthermore, ad-hoc approaches are found to be predominantly used for determining optimal model predictors, appropriate data subsets and the optimal model structure. Multilayer perceptron and ensemble-type models are predominantly implemented. Overall, the findings highlight the need for developing systematic protocols for developing powerful ANN models

    Earth Observation in the EMMENA Region: Scoping Review of Current Applications and Knowledge Gaps

    Earth observation (EO) techniques have significantly evolved over time, covering a wide range of applications in different domains. The scope of this study is to review the research conducted on EO in the Eastern Mediterranean, Middle East, and North Africa (EMMENA) region and to identify the main knowledge gaps. We searched through the Web of Science database for papers published between 2018 and 2022 for EO studies in the EMMENA. We categorized the papers in the following thematic areas: atmosphere, water, agriculture, land, disaster risk reduction (DRR), cultural heritage, energy, marine safety and security (MSS), and big Earth data (BED); 6647 papers were found with the highest number of publications in the thematic areas of BED (27%) and land (22%). Most of the EMMENA countries are surrounded by sea, yet there was a very small number of studies on MSS (0.9% of total number of papers). This study detected a gap in fundamental research in the BED thematic area. Other future needs identified by this study are the limited availability of very high-resolution and near-real-time remote sensing data, the lack of harmonized methodologies and the need for further development of models, algorithms, early warning systems, and services

    Effect of traffic dataset on various machine-learning algorithms when forecasting air quality

This research investigates the effects traffic dataset have on the performance of Machine Learning (ML) predictive models in air quality prediction. Design/methodology/approach (limit 100 words) To achieve this, we have set up an experiment with the control dataset having only the Air Quality (AQ) dataset and Meteorological (Met) dataset. While the experimental dataset is made up of the AQ dataset, Met dataset and Traffic dataset. Several ML models (such as Extra Trees Regressor, eXtreme Gradient Boosting Regressor, Random Forest Regressor, K-Neighbors Regressor, and five others) were trained, tested, and compared on these individual combinations of datasets to predict the volume of PM2.5, PM10, NO2, and O3 in the atmosphere at various time of the day. Findings (limit 100 words) The result obtained showed that various ML algorithms react differently to the traffic dataset despite generally contributing to the performance improvement of all the ML algorithms considered in this study by at least 20% and an error reduction of at least 18.97%. Research limitations/implications (limit 100 words) This research is limited in terms of the study area and the result cannot be generalized outside of the UK as many conditions may not be similar elsewhere. Additionally, only the ML algorithms commonly used in literature are considered in this research. Therefore, leaving out a few other ML algorithms. Practical implications (limit 100 words) This study reinforces the belief that the traffic dataset has a significant effect on improving the performance of air pollution ML prediction models. Hence, there is an indication that ML algorithms behave differently when trained with a form traffic dataset in the development of an air quality prediction model. This implies that developers and researchers in air quality prediction need to identify the ML algorithms that behave in their best interest before implementation.     Environmental risk assessment in the mediterranean region using artificial neural networks

    Los mapas auto-organizados han demostrado ser una herramienta apropiada para la clasificación y visualización de grupos de datos complejos. Redes neuronales, como los mapas auto-organizados (SOM) o las redes difusas ARTMAP (FAM), se utilizan en este estudio para evaluar el impacto medioambiental acumulativo en diferentes medios (aguas subterráneas, aire y salud humana). Los SOMs también se utilizan para generar mapas de concentraciones de contaminantes en aguas subterráneas simulando las técnicas geostadísticas de interpolación como kriging y cokriging. Para evaluar la confiabilidad de las metodologías desarrolladas en esta tesis, se utilizan procedimientos de referencia como puntos de comparación: la metodología DRASTIC para el estudio de vulnerabilidad en aguas subterráneas y el método de interpolación espacio-temporal conocido como Bayesian Maximum Entropy (BME) para el análisis de calidad del aire. Esta tesis contribuye a demostrar las capacidades de las redes neuronales en el desarrollo de nuevas metodologías y modelos que explícitamente permiten evaluar las dimensiones temporales y espaciales de riesgos acumulativos
