Feminist Flash Mob Intervention - Handout

To launch Women’s History Month, a series of feminist flash mob interventions took place at the University of Richmond on Wednesday, March 4, 2020 organized by professors Patricia Herrera and Mariela Méndez who team-taught the bilingual course Gender, Race, and Performance Across the Americas. These flash mobs were inspired by “Un violador en tu camino,” a performance based protest against gender violence created by the Chilean feminist collective Lastesis. “A Rapist in Your Path” was first staged in Valparaíso, Chile, in, 2019. Soon after, it went viral, and has been performed by women all over the world. Students from six different classes were in charge of adapting the lyrics and selecting locations that spoke to their experiences and the incidents of racism and sexism at the University of Richmond. Chilean and Transnational Performances of Disobedience: LasTesis and the Phenomenon of Un violador en tu camino

This article analyses the performance Un violador en tu camino created by Chilean feminist theatre collective LasTesis, shared by millions and re‐staged across the globe. It explores the relationship between the original piece and theorist Rita Segato's insights on rape culture, and how it counters aspects of this culture. It examines how the transnational spread of Un violador counters tendencies of MeToo, and examines four cases of the performance's re‐staging in Latin America and beyond, showing how they make manifest the pervasiveness of rape culture as well as how groups have adapted them to speak to local issues

¿Por qué se está islamizando el conflicto en el sur de Tailandia?

Este ARI analiza la difícil situación a la que debe enfrentarse el nuevo primer ministro de Tailandia, el general Surayud Chulanont. La caótica situación en el sur del país, donde desde enero de 2004 han muerto alrededor de 1.700 personas, en el marco de la lucha entre diversos grupos musulmanes y el ejército, se ha convertido en uno de los principales focos de inestabilidad en el área y amenaza con convertirse en un nuevo teatro de operaciones del yihadismo internacional. El análisis se centra en la dramática situación que se vive en el sur musulmán de Tailandia, ocasionada en buena medida por la agresiva política llevada a cabo por el depuesto primer ministro Thaksin Shinawatra, y explora las diferentes vías que puede adoptar el conflicto tras el golpe de Estado protagonizado por el ejército. La reciente visita del nuevo primer ministro, el general Surayud Chulanont, al foco de la insurgencia, Pattani, donde pidió perdón por los excesos y errores cometidos por la administración anterior, indica que se inicia una nueva etapa de diálogo entre el Gobierno central de Bangkok y los rebeldes del sur. Las cinco provincias meridionales, anexionadas por el antiguo reino de Siam, nunca han sido asimiladas en el nuevo Estado tailandés y repetidamente se han dado revueltas y sublevaciones hasta la más grave iniciada en enero de 2004. Desde una perspectiva general, el conflicto en el sur, aún siendo local, posee importantes ramificaciones que pueden afectar la seguridad regional en Asia-Pacifico, principalmente a Malasia y Tailandia, y azuzar más si cabe la tensa relación entre las distintas confesiones religiosas en el área

The magazin Ressorgiment and the Catalan collectivity of Buenos Aires (1916-1946)

La revista Ressorgiment alcanzó la existencia más prolongada entre todas las que crearon los emigrantes catalanes en el exterior. También fue una de las más influyentes en los ambientes del nacionalismo catalán de América Latina, hasta su cierre en 1972. En el artículo se analizan en primer lugar las razones que explican la aparición de la revista en 1916 y su rápida difusión. A continuación se presenta el elenco de sus principales colaboradores y anunciantes, en Buenos Aires y Barcelona. También se consideran las relaciones de la revista con la colectividad catalana y española de la Argentina y con los principales centros catalanistas de América, como La Habana, Montevideo y Santiago de Chile. Un examen más detallado se dedica a las opiniones de la revista respecto de Cataluña, de España y de las comunidades emigrantes. Por último, el artículo se ocupa del impacto del exilio republicano sobre Ressorgiment.The magazine Ressorgiment reached the longest existence among all those created by the Catalan emigrants abroad. It was also one of the most influential in the environments of Catalan nationalism in Latin America, until its closure in 1972. The article analyzes the reasons that explain the appearance of the magazine in 1916 and its rapid diffusion. Then there is a brief presentation of its main collaborators and advertisers, in Buenos Aires and Barcelona. The relations with the Catalan and Spanish community of Argentina and with the main Catalanist centers of America, such as Havana, Montevideo and Santiago de Chile, are also considered. A more detailed examination is devoted to the opinions of the magazine regarding Catalonia, Spain and the emigrant communities. Finally, the article deals with the impact of republican exile on Ressorgiment

Surfacing Contexts of Violence in Novel Forms of the Reproductive Justice Framework Through Lessons from Latin America: A Study of Brutality, Migration and Bodily Autonomy and Progressive Solutions for Use in Public Health

In the last 5 years, Latin America has witnessed a tenacious wave of pañuelo verde and #NiUnaMenos activism. Sparked by increasing mortality rates associated with unsafe, clandestine abortions and femicide, the praxes and fundamental elements of these social movements have proven themselves useful not only in garnering international attention on issues relating to bodily autonomy, but in the synthesis of their respective sociopolitical solutions as well. In the United States, similar efforts have been spearheaded by the lauded reproductive justice framework, which has often been credited for centering the plight of women of color in both reproduction and social justice. In the wake of the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” immigration policy, which most adversely impacts asylum seekers from Central America, the issues pañuelo verde and #NiUnaMenos activism have long aimed to tackle still prevail. As it stands, the “zero tolerance” policy no longer grants asylum to migrants seeking protection from threats of sexual violence, gang violence or political persecution, thereby turning a blind eye to issues of bodily autonomy altogether. Thus, this thesis proposes the recontextualization of immigration as an issue pertinent to reproductive justice. Further, the present study holds that the contexts of violence migrant Latinas face prior to entry into the United States are important grievances to redress in order to (i) prevent said sociopolitical ailments from replicating domestically, (ii) protect victims of violence-driven migration from potentially facing obstetric, domestic and sexual violence in the United States, and (iii) improve and deepen the commitment the reproductive justice framework makes to women of color in general

Liberando la cuestión de la actualidad. Acerca de la crítica foucaultiana a los discursos inflacionarios sobre el presente como “sociedad de masas” y “espacio estatizado”

With this article we pretend to contribute, in a really modest way, to the liberation of a tenacious image of our society: which operates as an ideological basis of a group of current socio-political pseudocritics, with great success and diffusion. For this we will undertake the exposition and the analysis of the development group of Naissance de la biopolitique in which Foucault accomplishes the critic of all that number of inflationary speeches that represent our society like a “mass society” and a “estatalized space”. Facing these vague and disproportionate forms of consideration, the foucaltian critic, in its exquisite attention to what happens nowadays, it should reveal how our societies function as systems that optimize the difference –radically nominalists-, in which it is produced, beyond any phantasmatic of the oppressor and invasive estate, a regretion of the legal-estate structures that articulate the socio-politic groups, in benefit of the reconstitution and the social tissue as a communitarian network, suitable for the dynamics of market competence that characterise our enterprise societies. That will open to a new idea of the critic, and to a displacement of its object and objectives.Con este artículo pretendemos contribuir, si bien de una manera muy modesta, a la liberación de una imagen obstinada de nuestra sociedad: la que opera como fundamento ideológico de un conjunto de pseudocríticas socio-políticas actuales, con gran éxito y difusión. Para ello acometeremos la exposición y análisis del grupo de desarrollos de Naissance de la biopolitique en que Foucault realiza la crítica de todo ese conjunto de discursos inflacionarios que presentan nuestra sociedad como una “sociedad de masas” y un “espacio estatizado”. Frente a estas formas vagas y desmesuradas de consideración, la crítica foucaultiana, en su exquisita atención por lo que hoy pasa, deberá poner de manifiesto el funcionamiento de nuestras sociedades como sistemas de optimización de la diferencia –radicalmente nominalistas-, en los que se produce, más allá de toda fantasmática del Estado opresor e invasivo, un retroceso de las estructuras jurídico-estatales que articulan los conjuntos socio-políticos, en beneficio de la reconstitución del tejido social como un tejido de carácter comunitario, apto para la dinámica del mercado de competencia característico de nuestras sociedades de empresa. Ello abrirá a una nueva idea de la crítica, y a un desplazamiento en su objeto y objetivos

El relato independentista como estrategia de persuasión en la crisis de Cataluña

El discurso político se vale, cada vez con mayor frecuencia e intencionalidad, de la activación emocional como estrategia de persuasión, dejando a un lado los elementos racionales. El relato construido por los independentistas en el contexto de la crisis de Cataluña es un claro ejemplo de ello. A través del análisis del discurso, entendido como técnica de investigación cualitativa, identificamos los elementos que constituyen el relato creado desde la perspectiva independentista. Nuestro estudio se detiene en el análisis de cuatro textos pertenecientes a responsables de distintos partidos políticos pronunciados en el ámbito parlamentario e institucional durante los meses de septiembre y octubre de 2017, momento en el que los acontecimientos alcanzan su mayor repercusión con la convocatoria del referéndum, la votación y la posterior proclamación de la república catalana. El estudio deja ver que el relato independentista está formado –principalmente- por cinco elementos, entre los que destaca la especial relevancia del componente emocional como eje transversal de la narración para lograr la persuasión. Planteamos la necesidad de realizar un cambio en el discurso político que desarrolle estrategias con un mayor componente racional, siendo esta cuestión -en el medio plazo- una acción fundamental para restablecer la confianza entre ciudadanía y política

LA IMAGEN DEL TERRORISTA EN LA NOVELA ESPAÑOLA ACTUAL

International audienceThe present article explores the figure of the terrorist in the contemporary Spanish novel. A variety of forms of terrorism are illustrated in the corpus, from anarchists to members of the ETA. The terrorist is examined both in terms of his membership in a group and as an individual. Former terrorists are also discussed, as well as the viewpoint of victims of terrorism. Terrorist groups are studied in terms of their leaders, the members of the commando squad and internal conflicts. The discussion of the terrorist as an individual focuses on how he or she became a terrorist, the role of the environment, the reasons for his or her entrance in the group and the way in which he or she was integrated. The picture that emerges is one of a broken person, a failure.Este trabajo se propone analizar la figura del terrorista en la narrativa actual española. Nuestro corpus ofrece una variada tipología del terrorismo, desde los anarquistas hasta los actuales etarras. Se estudia su figura como miembro de un grupo y como ser individual. Interesa también la figura del ex-terrorista y la imagen que del verdugo tienen las víctimas. Por lo que respecta al grupo, se hace hincapié en la figura del líder, de los miembros del comando y en los conflictos que se originan en su seno. Como individuo, se analiza la génesis del terrorista privilegiando el ambiente familar, la razón del ingreso y la socialización dentro del grupo.
