    Fireground location understanding by semantic linking of visual objects and building information models

    This paper presents an outline for improved localization and situational awareness in fire emergency situations based on semantic technology and computer vision techniques. The novelty of our methodology lies in the semantic linking of video object recognition results from visual and thermal cameras with Building Information Models (BIM). The current limitations and possibilities of certain building information streams in the context of fire safety or fire incident management are addressed in this paper. Furthermore, our data management tools match higher-level semantic metadata descriptors of BIM and deep-learning based visual object recognition and classification networks. Based on these matches, estimations can be generated of camera, objects and event positions in the BIM model, transforming it from a static source of information into a rich, dynamic data provider. Previous work has already investigated the possibilities to link BIM and low-cost point sensors for fireground understanding, but these approaches did not take into account the benefits of video analysis and recent developments in semantics and feature learning research. Finally, the strengths of the proposed approach compared to the state-of-the-art is its (semi -)automatic workflow, generic and modular setup and multi-modal strategy, which allows to automatically create situational awareness, to improve localization and to facilitate the overall fire understanding

    In sensor research we take advantage of additional contextual sensor information to disambiguate potentially erroneous sensor readings or to make better informed decisions on a single sensor’s output. This use of additional information reinforces, validates, semantically enriches, and augments sensed data. Lifelog data is challenging to augment, as it tracks one’s life with many images including the places they go, making it non-trivial to find associated sources of information. We investigate realising the goal of pervasive user-generated content based on sensors, by augmenting passive visual lifelogs with “Web 2.0” content collected by millions of other individuals

    Mapping and the Citizen Sensor

    Maps are a fundamental resource in a diverse array of applications ranging from everyday activities, such as route planning through the legal demarcation of space to scientific studies, such as those seeking to understand biodiversity and inform the design of nature reserves for species conservation. For a map to have value, it should provide an accurate and timely representation of the phenomenon depicted and this can be a challenge in a dynamic world. Fortunately, mapping activities have benefitted greatly from recent advances in geoinformation technologies. Satellite remote sensing, for example, now offers unparalleled data acquisition and authoritative mapping agencies have developed systems for the routine production of maps in accordance with strict standards. Until recently, much mapping activity was in the exclusive realm of authoritative agencies but technological development has also allowed the rise of the amateur mapping community. The proliferation of inexpensive and highly mobile and location aware devices together with Web 2.0 technology have fostered the emergence of the citizen as a source of data. Mapping presently benefits from vast amounts of spatial data as well as people able to provide observations of geographic phenomena, which can inform map production, revision and evaluation. The great potential of these developments is, however, often limited by concerns. The latter span issues from the nature of the citizens through the way data are collected and shared to the quality and trustworthiness of the data. This book reports on some of the key issues connected with the use of citizen sensors in mapping. It arises from a European Co-operation in Science and Technology (COST) Action, which explored issues linked to topics ranging from citizen motivation, data acquisition, data quality and the use of citizen derived data in the production of maps that rival, and sometimes surpass, maps arising from authoritative agencies

En esta tesis nos interesan aquellas trazas digitales que también registran la geolocalización de las personas al momento de realizar sus actividades diarias. Esta información nos permite conocer cómo las personas interactúan con la ciudad, algo muy valioso en planificación urbana,gestión de tráfico, políticas publicas e incluso para tomar acciones preventivas frente a desastres naturales.Esta tesis tiene por objetivo estudiar patrones de comportamiento humano a partir de trazas digitales. Para ello se utilizan tres conjuntos de datos masivos que registran la actividad de usuarios anonimizados en cuanto a llamados telefónicos, compras en tarjetas de crédito y actividad en redes sociales (check-ins,imágenes, comentarios y tweets). Se propone una metodología que permite extraer patrones de comportamiento humano usando modelos de semántica latente, Latent Dirichlet Allocation y DynamicTopis Models. El primero para detectar patrones espaciales y el segundo para detectar patrones espaciotemporales.     Mapping traffic pollution exposure:the quantified self

    The purpose of this paper is to apply recent developments in the areas of the ‘Quantified Self’ and the ‘Internet of Things’ in order to explore the use of low-cost sensors for the collection of a variety of spatially-referenced biometric and environmental data from participants. This is achieved using a specially designed application on the Android mobile platform, which has been developed for this project in order to log serial sensor data via USB against GPS location and timestamp, allowing the spatio-temporal mapping of a variety of personal data. In this case, traffic pollution data is collected and compared with a measures of nasal airflow, permitting an estimate of exposure to traffic pollution for an individual on a given journey. These data will be fed back to individuals in order to assess the level of correlation with their reported perception of exposure to pollution, as well the extent to which this influences subsequent behaviour; such as whether or not an individual will modify their route for a given journey based upon their new knowledge of pollution levels. In this way, personal pollution exposure can be empirically monitored at the individual level, allowing for a more in-depth understanding of these issues than has so far been possible
